RD Bode Wilde (2018, 41st, NYI)

In any sense, glad to see the kid is thriving. I would have liked him in Detroit for sure.

I am surprised Detroit didn't take him in the 2nd given the local connection, that being said nothing wrong with the McIsaac pick

He’s originally from Montreal though. He went to Michigan just to play hockey so it’s not really a local connection since lots of kids play in the NTDP.

People bashing a Leaf fan when he mentioned absolutely nothing about the team and is chiming in on the player in his own thread. The inferiority complex strikes again.

:help:

Watched him closely vs. Kitchener, and he changed my opinion of him, which was shaped mostly by the u18s and scouting reports made by others before the draft. He moves the puck really smoothly, can make precise quick passes from defense. Seemed to read the game fast. Really was not much to complain about him offensively. However defensively he seems to be careless at times and he won't get away with that decision making when his team is without the puck in higher levels. If he figures that side out, based on that game I think he might be a good one. Looking forward to seeing him more.

yea i dont see the correlation with this poster above being a leafs fan and people bashing him. he's not even talking about a maple leaf. and you insinuating all leaf fans are the same, is asinine.

My man! Appreciate it, thanks!

He’s gonna make a lot of doubters look stupid.
to be fair, there were/are issues there...how he learns from it and how he motivates himself because of the snub is up to him...but he should not have slipped that far down, Sweet Lou wasn't letting him get past his pick and he will be rewarded for it.

Not saying Wilde didn’t/doesn’t have his warts, just that they are fixable and that his upside was worth gambling on far before 41st overall.

Wilde is putting up solid numbers with Saginaw so far. I was surprised he fell to the 2nd round.

His defensive lapses is likely what made him slip. I got to see a fair amount of him play for the USDP. His size, skating, and offensive instincts are insane. He knows how talented he is offensively so it leads him to take some chances. He’s a smart player and I think with some good coaching and development he can shore up his defensife game and become a 2nd or 3rd Pairing Defensman in the league.

If he responds well to coaching, develops well, and shores up his defensive game we're looking at a top-pair guy. Whether all that happens is a different question.

Everything would have to go absolutely perfect. He certainly has the tools to become a top pairing guy but I think he’s a safer bet for a middle pairing guy. Either way, I think he will be an nhl Defensman.

I would agree with that for most prospects. People say that they have top pairing upside when they probably don’t and it’s usually middle pairing upside, but I think Wilde is very boom or bust. If he figures it out, he’s as talented as any player in this draft other than Dahlin. If not, he probably won’t stick in the NHL. I wouldn’t let his draft position dictate these designations either. I’m a big fan of Dobson, but I think the Islanders more talented defensive pick was Wilde, and I believe I had Dobson ranked 5th. Wilde was way under-drafted and belonged in the same conversation as the non-Dahlin defensemen.

I drafted Bode 25th overall in our league here on HF- HFNHL - didn't regret it at the time absolutely standing by it right now...he had one of the highest ceilings for any dman in his draft, but he also had such a low floor as well if he didn't adapt, adjust and learn from his mistakes...I was not happy with the CHL route as my fear would be it can mask some of his issues, but from the little I have seen so far, he does look like he is making better decisions with the puck, and especially quicker decisions which were the areas he needed the most work on last year.

I also drafted Blade Jenkins in the 5th round as well, I think that one will work out nicely for me and the Isles as well..

I don't think he's a "safe" bet to be an NHL dman of any kind. Him busting and never becoming a full time NHLer wouldn't shock me. Him becoming a top-pair guy also wouldn't shock me. As others have said he's ridiculously boom or bust. He could be Brent Burns, he could be a career AHLer.

I was saying safer bet to you expect a middle pairing guy than a top pairing guy. While I do think he will become an nhl player, obviously anyone can become a bust and never make it.

that crazy kid just keeps on scoring...another goal and an assist for Wilde tonight...he is showing a lot of poise out there, keep it up kid, Crow tastes like **** served up cold!
No one should be surprised that he's putting up points in the OHL. The question I have is how's his defensive play been in Saginaw? That is where he struggled with the NTDP and what will make or break him as a prospect.

Some actually were arguing he's not that good offensively. He's an elite offensive defenseman. As @Whalers Fan said, that part of his game is a given. Can he make better puck decisions in his own zone? I don't even think his defense is that bad when his team doesn't have the puck. Its not great, but its passable.

I still don't understand why he wasn't invited to the World Jr tryout camp this summer, if for no other reason to groom him for the possibility of playing in 2020

The reason I wish he went to Michigan was because I felt it was better for his defensive development. In the OHL he can get away with a lot more things than he would in the NCAA.

Either way, he’s putting up numbers which is a plus and now it’s on Saginaw and the islanders to teach him to become a complete Defensman. The biggest thing he has going for him is his combination of size and skating ability. Thats an excellent package to have for a Defensman.

Don't forget highly skilled to that package. Big, swift, and skilled RD's have insane value around the league. Especially those that put up offensive numbers. Pulock was an all offense guy when drafted, he worked on his defensive game (and skating) to where he has top pairing potential now. Trotz is grooming him to be more than a PP specialist. Wilde is another moldable pile of clay with insane tools.
