I would imagine it's the issue with this award (and the Selke) where it isn't JUST about this season. It's reputation and history crap like that.
He has been playing at an elite level still but definitely not having the best season out of the d-men this year

There's a long interview with Rasmus in a Swedish newspaper. Not going to translate everything, but.

He loves living in Buffalo with his girlfriend, they've been together four years. He's gone from being a promising player to a superstar (yes, yes Swedish media likes to exaggerate). Part of the reasons for the breakout was being given the A and long talks with Victor Hedman at last year's ASG.

One of the biggest factors loving playing for the Sabres is the role he's been given. Donny Granato is the perfect coach for him. When he became coach it was a boost personally and for the team. Granato is an amazing coach and what came before, he just wants to not give a damn about. Although it's taught him a lot. Dahlin doesn't want to talk about it, but Mike Harrington says that Krueger demolished Dahlin's self confidence. And Granato had to rebuild it. Granato is a positive coach, Krueger was an extremely negative coach.

Rasmus smiles widely when talking about Granato. As soon as he became coach he turned everything around. It had always been a very negative feeling and a looser attitude in the room, but he turned it around. Granato's used to coach younger players and if they've had a bad game he doesn't scream but instead he shows video on how they can improve. He always tells his players to play fearless to go out and play without overthinking. If you're afraid to lose then you'll lose. That's what they've worked most on in the dressing room and now they feel like winners. They have a great future ahead of them.

It was Granato who phoned Rasmus and offered him the A at the beginning of the season after he wore it at the end of the previous season as a 'warm up.' Dahlin immediately said yes. It feels amazing that he's been given the responsibility and he feels like he's more himself with the A. He loves being a leader and being an important part of the team. He feels he's still developing and shouldering more as a leader is great. Everytime he comes to the rink it's important (italics by reporter). Because he's one of the leaders he has to lead by example how to get the team to the next level. That makes him even more motivated. He's not a big talker in the dressing room so he tries to show it in other ways, pushing people on the ice, to put every pass on the stick, to always give 100% and then go the extra mile.

Putting Dahlin in a leader role was part of Buffalo's changing of the guard. Harrington says that Rasmus would not have been in the role he's in, if other players hadn't left. Harrington talks about how it's Dahlin's, Cozen's and Tuch's team now and that Dahlin no longer have to defer to other players. Sabres are close to a playoff spot - last time was when Rasmus was 11.

Apart from the A, going to the ASG, hanging out with the others stars and in particular having long talks with Victor Hedman was an important part of Rasmus' confidence in himself. It gave him a big push, more self confidence and something happened in his mind. He's always believed in himself but at the same time questioning if he's as good as the best players in the NHL and the ASG was confirmation that he is as good.

Being a leader has also meant he takes more responsibility and plays the right way. His defence has improved, he makes better decisions, and hits more icings which is a sign that his play is more stabil and he does the right thing.

Yes, icings is a good thing. There are hard passes, and there's no waffling about in the defensive zone. He doesn't want to ice the puck but it's often the better alternative and the solid choice. It's his all round play that has improved. Which means his coach can rely more on him.

Personally, he and his GF love Buffalo, they live centrally and it's become his home. This saturday he's going to Mittelstadt's together with some other teammates. Mittelstadt will probably give them a nice steak dinner.

There's some more about how he seldom cooks but makes tacos which are his cheat food. And that he's learned to like wings but eats only the mild version.

Very rough and ready translation - it's a long article. But I think the summation is, Dahlin loves being a leader and has become a better player because of it. He had some serious self-confidence issues which are now behind him. He craves responsibility, has some weird thoughts on icing and loves the city and his team.

To expand on the icing thing, he sees it as a sign that he doesn't always have to make things too complicated in the defensive zone. Sometimes an icing can be ok.

Yeah, I take it to mean he understands that it is sometimes better to just get out of immediate danger rather than waiting for a real positive option to open up or trying to force one.

He should've turned down the clown show ASG and taken the fine imo. Why give in to the nhl when they disrespected him and he need a good rest for the more important playoff push looked occasionally tired and lazy last night. Should've given the spot to Alex tuch instead.
Its a suspension as well
