Going back to reading old rumors, I remember reading Gretzky trade rumors circa 95-96 on AOL Grandstand sports forums. Then around 97-98 rumors on LGK of Jagr to the Kings, then Bure to the Kings. Then in '99 it was Fleury, then Ziggy, and after getting Ziggy the Kings would be rumored to be after a big center like Lindros or Gratton or Primeau. All we had to rely on to keep us going as Kings fans then was false hope.

wow, I was on the AOL grandstand back then too, that was some fun, I remember there was a guy by the name of ShadyBang that was into hockey fights almost as much as Johhny Utah and there was even a very knowledgeable Ducks fan who used to roam the Kings board.

Since we are talking, some of the more known guys that we are missing on HFBoards:
-David A. Rainer
-Fugu
-jfont
-Captain Ron (trololo)
-Primakov!
-JDM
-GKJ
-King Blazer
...

Almost all of those folks are still around, they just don't post as often. JDM (and Zad) have their own blog now so understandably that's where their free time for online BBS's is spent). Fugu practically lived on these forums for years - understandably that isn't sustainable long term.

Others mentioned such as DIEHARD got too busy with work to spend as much time here. I had season seats for years near DIEHARD (and DH Jr.) and they are still around and kicking. Terrific, passionate fans. Sometimes life gets in the way of posting on forums.

There are also other mediums for info now that didn't exist in early 2000's - Twitter, Facebook, etc. - all have come about in the time HFBoards was around.

There's still a ton of great discussion around (the "Kings will win a lot of games soon" thread alone is loaded with really thoughtful, terrific insight from posters here). Ask thought-provoking questions and you'll get thought-provoking answers.

FWIW, the forums are more active now (in terms of users and posts) than they ever have been. Just different faces.

Cap Ron (Squid) is not around. If he is he had best 'splain himself now.

I don't think the Boards have changed much since 2010 when I joined.

Really the only change (in my opinion), is everyone has expectations now.

That's the way I see it too, I don't think it's too different. Lost some good posters, gained some new good ones... the same with "bad" ones. There are always gonna be people who get on your nerves to some extent but like any other memory you tend to forget the bad ones over time. I definitely think with a better team comes expectations and the higher your expectations are the more likely you're gonna be disappointed and in a bad mood because of it.

One thing I've noticed over the years is that Internet culture in general is definitely much more mean spirited these days, with more and more people growing up having spent most of their lives on the Internet that part becomes second nature to them and they don't think much about it. Once "trolling" became a thing and was celebrated things went predictably south across pretty much all open discussion forums across the web.

I do love me some gifs though, I can't deny it  They're childish and dumb but they make me laugh.

I could have swore that was you. Who was the guy with the JJ avatar and the "JMFJ" below it?

I defended Jack to my detriment, but I never subscribed to the J MF J acronym. I always thought that was weird and uncomfortable. I thought it was so weird seeing his Dad sitting with his mother while wearing a shirt that said JMFJ.

I'm glad I'm going to use this as my hundredth post! :towel:

I recently just went from lurking to posting, but I really like this board. I have learned a lot about hockey from our educated posters, and I'm able to post some of my own opinions and observations and be met with both criticism and compliment. Its mostly because of this board that I know see sports, in general, in a different way, and it bothers me when I'm forced to watch a sport I don't know a ton about. Also, I can talk hockey in the office and have people stare at me blankly :sarcasm:.

I also like the lighter sides of the board. The jokes, sarcasm, and overall humor are a good change of pace from the monotony of intellectual debate and never ending stats. its what gives the board its personality.

Overall I'm glad I joined this board. I'm excited to continue posting, and I'm excited to see where Kings Hockey will go. I've always been a Kings fan, but this has to be the pinnacle of both my knowledge and my frenzied fandom.

If it makes everyone feel better about this board, I am a mature adult now and not running around LGK getting my kicks being a troll.

If you want to go back to a time where the Kings were garbage for years, you are going to get a different type of poster than some of the new jacks who have popped up since they started making the playoffs. Regardless, if a great poster leaves, it is difficult to replace them as many of these posters from the early-to-mid '00s who have moved on were, as I remember, older in age with a longer history of watching the Kings and hockey in general.

There is many a Kings fan on this board that can be described as noveau riche. As it was for many Canucks fans, there are many people that don't wear winning very well. You deal with it at Staples now too with a myriad of uneducated new fans but, hey, it is a small price to pay for winning. I'd rather they win and have a supposedly weaker GDT than go back to 2004.

I do think the majority of us expect the Kings to win, given their record the last two seasons and the amount of money being spent on this team. PGTs after a win are generally shorter because, unless a new player or prospect has a great game, there isn't much need to talk about how Kopitar killed it again. "Park and ride" as Sutter says. If this team goes in the crapper though, like it did in January, then you are going to have a lot more discussion. That's only natural to me. I do think that some of the "negative" posters were kind of driven off the board once they started to win as there is a strong groupthink at play, as evidenced by shots taken at Herby whenever something good occurs to one of the players he thinks is garbage, but it is hard for me to shake being negative as a Cup Run and one full season of good hockey following does not equal 26 years of mostly disapointment.

I was on LGK back in 1997 along with Gann's old site. I left LGK behind probably in '04 as I found this board to be less "nudge nudge, wink wink" and more about hockey only. Now, there is a bit more of that these days, such as RP and CNS needing to get a room every once in awhile :sarcasm:, but to me it isn't a nightmare or anything because, at the end of the day, there are still very knowledgeable posters on this board and it isn't hard to find them.

As always, the "ignore" feature is your friend. If there is someone that is just a .gif bomber that you don't want cluttering up your thread, then ignore them.

I agree with almost everything you said. Hell, look at the "Kings will win lots of games soon" thread alone - there's a ton of great discussion in there.

GDT's need to be taken at face value. They're the "SQUIRREL!" threads. Back years ago when not all the Kings games were even televised and Twitter and Facebook weren't around, they were the only place to get any real-time info about how the team was playing. There are myriad other options now for that data.

And I do have to give props to Herby. He gets his balls busted whenever Stoll has a good game once in a blue moon and still manages to keep it professional and stay on the high road. :)

Btw: Anyone around here wants to see and "enjoy" this 2003 pre-season expectations thread? this thread.

Medical caution: Thread will either make you smile or cry...

That's another point that's worth making. The mid-2000's Kings "dark period" was almost intolerable around here for huge stretches of time, so yes, while some posters were driven away when the Kings started winning, there were a lot of glass is half full posters that headed for the exits back in the day as well when you needed boots to wade through all the negativity around here. It ebbs and flows with how the team is performing - as someone else said, there was a lot more to talk about when the team was terrible.

I don't think this board has gone downhill that much over the years. But hfboards in general is dealing with the highest level of morons it's ever had. I pretty much don't bother going to other forums here anymore except at the trade deadline or the opening of free agency. Good posts are still made, but I don't have the time to wade through all the trash to find them.

I could have swore that was you. Who was the guy with the JJ avatar and the "JMFJ" below it?

Who was the other Michigan fan that was around back then? Herby was one of them but I vaguely remember JMFJ guy being incensed over DL's comments about Red and Michigan to Gann as well. Thinking it was the same poster.

I can't wait till Boyle and Tambellini are destroying this league!
Good one. Everybody knows Pushkarev and Lehoux are the future...

For the DID YOU KNOW BOOKS:

David Clarkson was invited to the Kings rookie camp but failed to impress Dave Taylors staff in 2013. Peter Kanko had about 30 Pts more than him when with Kitch Rangers. Guess who gets the 6mio$ in the NHL from the TML in 2014.

The GDT has changed somewhat, but other than that, I like the humor of our young, exuberant, newer posters.

And I for one LOVE the gifs. They're a RIOT!!!

Kinda see what the OP is saying but as also said its the internet, I just went back to lurking and sift through the obvious 99% of internet crap to find that 1% that interests me. kinda surprised I posted close to 1,500 posts to be honest.

I remember starting on LGK and then being turned off by the attitude of the posters there. They didn't make new guys feel too welcome. So I found HF. I signed up years back but then something happened on hf where people lost their logins (am I imagining this?) or maybe I just lost my password. So I started this new account. I honestly don't post much since I'm not as knowledgeable at hockey as most of the rest of you, but I learn a lot from all of you. I'm more into the visual/graphic side of things: avatars, gifs, graphics, etc.

I'm a visual person so what ever happened to these guys?:

Guilty. Maybe I'm not that mature. :) You won't find a social media site or forum without my own picture but my career involves promoting myself.

How can you promote yourself if we never know your name? :sarcasm:
