This is how I see that the Marleau thing happened:

Mike Babcock: I really want Marleau. He's such a good pro. I need that guy, Matthews and Marner aren't good pros.

Lou Lam: Well, I've never been shy about overpaying vets Mike, but Patrick loves San Jose and he's only going to leave if we give him a ridiculous contract. Can't you pick someone else?

Mike Babcock: No, Patrick will never win crap and he's already been stripped of the C. He's exactly the kind of good Pro I need.

Lou Lam: Well, ok, we have a crap load of cap space and it's not my money. I mean only a moron could make this an issue for the length of contract I'm giving.

Dubas: Hold my beer.

Yet trading for two years of Murray @ 4.7m in a year where we were closer than we have ever been was a good move according to Dekes. What is it?
While Murray may not have lived up to the 4.7m cost last year, Murray at least brought positive impact to the team, plus draft picks, and there was the potential for more. No GM is going to hit on every player, let alone goalie, but that's very different from sacrificing players in order to intentionally keep a player that you know will only bring negative impact on the ice and cost 6.25m.

Marleau deserves some roasting for how things turned out. He put his house up for sale part way through year two, told the Leafs he would not return for year three, and would only accept a trade to San Jose. It's not like he did the Leafs any favours.

They should have thrown he and his Iron Man streak into the press box to start the year. His acceptable destinations would have increased then.
