Girardi was a true Ranger warrior, poured blood into that jersey, literally, and sacrificed his health to get the W. People's frustration with him wasn't his fault - he didn't choose to play himself 20+ minutes a night on the first D pairing, that's on AV. People would have had far less of a problem if he was on the third pair playing 12 mins. And this was after years of injuries/decline.
G helped set the example in a locker room that now has a reputation for stability and a winning mentality, that has made the playoffs every year of Girardi's tenure except for one. Him and the other long-time Ranger vets deserve a ton of credit for helping to create and sustain that team culture despite having 3 different head coaches and a revolving cast of supporting players and incoming/outgoing stars. That really is an amazing accomplishment, and as a Ranger fan, I will always be grateful to Hank/G/Staal/Cally/Dubi/Richards/McD/Stepan for defining what it means to be part of the Rangers organization the past decade and a half. And G has been doing it since 2007!
For his own health sake, I hope he retires, but if not, I am rooting hard to him to find a right fit in the NHL on bottom pairing of a young team where he can show them what it means to be a pro, and hopefully prove to everyone that he is just fine in the proper role, even at his current age.
Thanks for everything, Danny!
