They don't have to name one until they feel that they have a player worthy of wearing the C.

Staal would be an easy choice because of seniority, but I don't think they'd slap a C on a potential buy out candidate.

Yeah, we'd probably go without one for at least a season, but just curious on early odds.

McDonagh is the foundation of the house.

I think there will be some regret over trading McDonagh if he goes...it could be many many long years before they ever have a defenseman as good as he is no matter how many picks they get.
But the flip side is always, does it make sense to hold onto a guy in his late 20's who's probably going to be getting $7 mill on a new contract that takes him into his mid 30's when you're also selling and resigning yourself to not being a contender? Not really, but it's still going to hurt a whole lot to see the defense without him if he is traded.

The Rangers have been good so far about not committing to those long-term (6-8 years) contracts aside from Hank. I hope we can keep it that way.

Losing McD stings, but we have to take a good look in the mirror and ask if we have a roster capable of getting us the cup. I don't think we do. The team, as configured, just doesn't have it.

Most scorched earth rebuilds fail miserably.

Everyone finally gets their wish thinking we'll be Chicago, and we more likely end up Edmonton.

What about the last 80 years indicates they get this right?

Again, ignoring the fact that even in our worst of times, luring capable UFA is, was and never will be an issue.

But you keep on keeping on

Reactions: Rangers in 7
As Viper said earlier this a Christmas morning thread. BRB is killing it in this one and RangerBoy as always. Let the selling begin!

If McDonagh gets traded, nuke the ****ing thing.

I concede to the rebuild and the 7-10 years of garbage :surrender

I suspect if we trade both McD and MZA (and the whole rest of the pile), the rebuild will be much fast than if we don't trade them.

1) McDonagh for Nylander;
2) MZA for another Lias Andersson (either a semi-early pick or a similar prospect)
3) Nash for a late #1
4) Grabs for a late #1
5) Holden and Desharnais for a couple of mid-round picks

Shores up our forward situation by adding Nylander and another Lias (plus Zib, Butcher, Kreider, Miller, Hayes, Fast, Vesey, Chytil, Lias, Nieves, Vinny L). We'd then have 3 first rounds, hopefully to add some defensemen. That's a much faster rebuilding than sitting and waiting.

Welp..No turning back now.
At this point, moves have to be made but I'm not sure how I feel about losing McD and Zucca.
I also have a hard time believing that JG is the right man too pull this off.
If Shattenkirk/Zabinejad/Smith end up as the new captain of this team I'm gonna lose it.
That's just throwing more shit at the wall and hoping it will stick...

Was barely worth the gumball.

Retired a year and a half after getting traded.

He was not a good player when traded.

Thank you.

Nothing against Leetch, but people have such a hard time accepting that he was not even remotely close to the player he was when traded as he was during his prime.

In fact, a lot of the people I’ve found most reluctant to understand the trade , weren’t even alive to see him when he was awesome.

Moreover , the Rangers said he could come back. He wasn’t pissed just because of Ranger loyalty. He was pissed because he didn’t want to go to Toronto and not just have the off season.

Furthermore, the NHL was on the brink of collapse.

Anyway, I agree on both fronts , he was not the player he once was , and comparing the return for 2nd to last year Leetch to our younger rentals if a poor comparison.

Defense looks terrible though and even if they hit on all their first round picks it's likely to be years and years before they become top contributors in the NHL.

It's a gamble for sure and partly why AV probably has to either go or drastically change his coaching style because defensemen just can't play the system he wants

Ok, so McDonagh for Nylander, and MZA+Holden+#2 for Trouba. Then Nash and Grabs for a late first rounder each, giving us 3 total.

Less than a zero percent chance Mika gets a letter. Kreider will (maybe this will make him play hard all the time) Shatty or Miller maybe. Definitely Zucc or Grabner if either one is still here

I guess we find out soon enough..

In theory yeah if they could pry Trouba free without giving up everything then that'd help tremendously but color me skeptical

No captain after the trades. Kreider can have an A. Staal can keep his until he gets bought out. By the end of next season, Lias gets the C (joking). We can roll 3 As during this “rebuild” period. Eventually a C will emerge.

Agreed wholeheartedly. The Blues would win the cup with him and that defense

Yeah..What would be the point?
A goalie needs to come back in one of these deals.
One that can hold down the fort until Shesterkin is ready for prime time..
