Oh, i know! I don't get how they get "Rags" out of "Rangers"... I even asked that question in one of the threads and I haven't checked yet if I got an answer. It's so dumb.

I crusaded against it for years as a mod and admin. Don't let it get to you, guys. It only makes other fans use it more.

What I posted was true.

Also, not particularly concerned with my/our reputation with a bunch of people I don't know on HF. I'm extremely polite, friendly and helpful to everyone on HF. However, when people start dumb threads on the main board, I'm happy to go mix it up.

I don't care about our reputation though. There's just no reason to be rude to people whether they're on a message board or not.

Honestly, I hate the term "rags". Not even because of what it actually refers to, I hated it before I knew what it actually referred to. Even as a piece of cloth you use to wipe stuff, it's unflattering. That said I'm a huge proponent of looking at intent. I'm convinced that 90% of the board uses it in a benign way.

I call the Islanders the Piles, as in hemorrhoids as a play on their "Isles" nickname so I am the last to complain. I was just curious as to the word origin because it has no similarity to our actual name.

Origin? Doesn't it come from "on the rag"

The main board, essentially, is a place to talk mild smack. It's part of being a sports fan.

I understand, but I think that was more than mild honestly. I think it has more to do with the team, if it were the Islanders I probably wouldn't care. But I feel bad for real fans of the Panthers that haven't won a playoff series since when 1996? And with the fact that no matter how good we've been we haven't won the cup, I don't think we're in a position to talk smack right now. Unless it's to fans of our rivals. Then all the rules change.

Also, honestly, there is still an annoying worshiping of the west and Kings/Hawks, but I think we go overboard a bit we get a lot of credit on the main boards too. Of course we'll never be half the team that the Kings are even if they finish with the worst record in the league, they'll just blame the difficult Western Conference.

Somebody on there compared Kreider actions to Steve Moore's actions that got his career ended.

To me, "Rags" is just an easy abbreviation in the same category as Sens, Pens, Habs...

I guess it all depends on the intention.

It's the intention. I don't think every fan means it that way because it kind of caught on as a simple abbreviation, but it was made up by rival fans and they intended it.

It's amazing. Kreider has not even come close to a suspendable action. Yet, every time he hits a guy too hard there's a thread.

Upon further review: Kreider's hit was just a very awkward hip check...

But the vast majority of fans mean it in a benign way. I've even read completely civil and even complimentary posts on the Isles board calling us "rags", it's possible that even many Isles fans don't know what it means.

Honestly, the word idiot used to mean vaguely the same thing as a word that start with "r" and today offends a lot of people. Now idiot is not offensive to anyone, other than someone who insulted by it, but it's not a slur anymore. I feel like "rags" is not a slur anymore.
