Don’t take blame, they had to do something never done before in team history to win tonite.

For 55 minutes this team couldn’t generate a lick of offense. There is something wrong here despite the wins.

Yeah, it's called 6 games in 10 days, 5 of 6 on the road, ridiculous travel from Toronto to Nashville to Ottawa, missing 2 of top 6 guys, new coach, new system, 1/3 of the roster new, Panarin not right yet. I think that about covers it. I expected the first 15 games to be a struggle and the fact that they are 4-1-1 so far is amazing and speaks to how good this team can be when they are in sync and healthy.

These road wins and finding ways is very much an experienced NHL head coach thing. Managing the team on and off the ice that I don't think Quinn had a handle on. It's odd to remember that with AV and Torts we had these types of perseverance that we haven't seen in years. Last 3 years has all been about the parts being greater than the sum but so far with 10-93 sleeping and 24 and 16 out, we've been a sum is greater than the parts team. A lot of luck for sure but good experience for the team early on to have some faith in tough games.
You’re totally right with all of this. And it’s huge to bank points when the team isn’t at their best and it’s also huge for moral and belief in the team. You win enough games like this and then when you’re down a goal late in the season it DOESN’T feel impossible like it so often did under Quinn.

NHL is taking a break for the Olympics, right? Could 18 for Ottawa actually join his country’s diving team? Does the diving competition even coincide with the NHL break??

The ironic thing is he embellished 3 other times that weren't called but the one he got tripped on that cost them the game was a legit penalty. What goes around comes around.

It is mind boggling if they think the first goal/Murray getting hurt is even remotely his fault. And the hit on Norris was a penalty but to call it vicious or dirty is another joke.

It was vicious AND dirty but so what?

I believe we’re going to find out one day that Panarin has been playing hurt since training camp. If I recall he only played in one preseason game (would appreciate a fact check).
Next game keep an eye on his left hand/wrist and how he grips his stick when passing.
He had a great pass to Kreider.

It's also different and maturing personnel.

There’s a reason the Torts era gave rise to “the right way” meme. Given the right personnel, I have no problem with a team that plays that way.
The thing I like about where this is headed is that Gallant brings the same style of team performance without the grating personality. Players coach, not a little general

Some people seem to think Kreider will get a game suspension for the late hit, but I personally would be surprised.

Seemed like a textbook minor penalty to me
Yeah. Good hit. Bad spot on the ice. Penalty. Done.

GDT didn't like him. I thought he was good. He had limited time and help, playing with McKegg... but he eventually got some good forecheck pressure with Reaves and had a nice end to end rush early in the game. I like him and think the team would benefit with giving him a bigger role. He could arguably be our 2nd best center right now

There were no winners. Trouba had a good swing then got caught in an awkward position and Tkacuk ended on top. Blais was a scrum then they fell. Blais fight was the marker, imo, where the game changed.

First 2 periods were lifeless, going through the motions. Honestly thought the game was over when Georgiev gave up that 2nd goal...

Our top4 has been REALLY good. Nemeth is solid and the most unsexy player but I like him. Lundkvist is tiny and struggles.
I thought the guy grabbing Blais’ leg and flipping him over was pretty cheesy and dangerous. Shit happens. But this isn’t judo, either.

Right now, the thing this team has gotten much better at is overall team D. Things have really improved since the Toronto game. Georgiev had a few difficult saves to make, but otherwise the team clamped down in front of him. That was impressive.

The goals against. First one isn't necessarily Georgiev's fault, but I feel like it's the kind of shot Shesty finds a way to stop. But also I hate the body language. I hate seeing a puck go in top corner and the goalie is standing there still frozen with his glove up like he's in shock. It's a bad look. And I was impressed the Rangers didn't collapse after it. And also impressed they didn't start cheating all over the ice when they were down. They kept their structure the entire game, even after being down 2. The second goal IS Georgiev's fault. Was he screened? Sure. But that shouldn't have beaten him. That's a right pad save and maybe a tough rebound. But it should not have gone in. Georgiev's battles in net seem to be mental more than anything. Both goals were at the start of a period. He needs to be just as focused then as he does 10 minutes in. Again, it was impressive to see the team not fall apart after going down 2-0. They still didn't cheat. They stayed on the right side of the puck for the most part all game. And that's how you stay in most games. But it does make offense harder in this league when you don't cheat.

The team needs to figure out it's PP. They have to find some other ways of operating other than the standard right handed one timers. We need to have a few set plays to the other side of the ice. Or to the middle. Or perhaps a set play that starts below the goal line. It's becoming too obvious to defend and far too predictable for the goalies. And the way we're playing so clamped down, we neeeeeeed the PP to get us a goal a game.

That said, in general the offense needs to find ways to get inside the paint. Especially when they're struggling. All of the goals were from like 5 ft out or less. That's the way you win when you're missing your 2nd line. And it's the way you score in the playoffs. The fancy goals are far and few between come playoff time. Deflections, screens, tips, etc. That's what we need to perfect.

Panarin may be hurt. He may not. He's also the only forward going east/west. He doesn't totally love playing in traffic and along the walls the whole game. there aren't many players on the team that play a style conducive to Panarin's game. He works better with Zibby than with Chytil, but it's not a work of art either. Zibby and Kreids would do well to have Laf or Kakko back with them.

Nemeth isn't a wizard with the puck and keeps it very very simple. But he's big, clears the crease and is strong along the boards. He's really useful beyond being a 3rd pairing D. He plays PK, he can be used late in games when holding a lead. He's solid and unspectacular.

Finally we are better in the 3rd period because of our size. We eventually wear teams out. The hitting works in aggregate.
I thought the first goal was bad too. Seemed Georgiev wasn’t reading the play at all. Making it look like a great shot when he needs to be in better position. There was no trickery. No other attackers to worry about. Seems to me Georgiev was caught napping.
And I gave G an honorable mention because he was solid aside from two - in my opinion - bad goals.

Other than that how was the play Mrs. Lincoln? This is hockey not basketball, two bad goals is enough to lose most games especially on a team that struggles scoring right now.

He also stopped like a dozen prime chances.

I get your point for sure but if not for him, this game is well over before the 3rd period regardless of the 1 or 2 bad goals he let in.

Goddamn.

This team is easy to love right now.

Looks to me like there’s a bit of gelling going on?

Some points:

• Best coached game thus far for Gallant, including the decision to start Georgie.

• Best NHL game in Nils’ short career. He did a nice job disrupting plays and especially keeping pucks in and plays going. I loved seeing him out there with Fox as a spark down late in the 3rd. It worked.

• Morgan was better, he needs to play looser, it’s coming but he needs to be more decisive in whatever play he is trying to make. Working out the nerves.

• f***ing Serge Trouba out there. Wtf was that. Nice!

• Blais bringing yet another SMcD award worthy effort out there and threw in a GWA for good measure.

• Kreider absolutely cleaned that dudes house out. The power behind that hit was bordering on absurdity. I loved how after he just glided backwards slowly and literally let Brady T face wash him. And then he went to box all red faced. This is the evolving Kreider we need.

• Laf needs to play with more pace. Im gonna keep saying it until it happens.

• Panarin isn’t even going yet, Kakko and Strome still out.

• Goergiev played well enough to get a win. Some high percentage saves but he’s gotta bear down a little more. He definitely wants that second one back.

• Is Fox the best player in the league?
Serious Question. What in SAM HELL was he doing on that 4 on 4 when he literally danced though the neutral zone. Did anyone see that??

• Gallant likes to double shift guys. He threw Goodrow into a few shifts to settle down two separate lines in the second. He also had Laf on the fourth line banging. If it’s done by design it’s been a useful tactic.

• Still no Reaves fight?
Savin it for home ice

First of all good goalies are supposed to make big saves once in a while too. You don't just subtract that bad goals from the good saves and call it a night. This is the NHL where if you make saves on less than 90% shots you're not long for the league. So you're expected to make good saves AND not give up bush league goals. Also, this wasn't the Leafs game other than a few good plays he didn't face that many great chances.

I expect our team to score three goals. If the goalie screws the pooch but recovers it’s still salvageable. And in Georgiev’s case, I’ll admit I’m grading on a curve. But my main takeaway was he didn’t lose his shit and kept us in the match. It’s a positive development, I’d say.

Agree with all that but I also hope there's footage of that out there somewhere (bolded)...he was in the Matrix...

Yes, because as you say your standard are low with him. Sometimes when we struggle offensively (like we did most of today) and someone gets a shot on net I think "at least he got a shot on net". This is where we are with Georgiev.

We all know this. No one is saying Georgiev is a Vezina candidate but there were positives too. That’s all many of us are saying.

Ehhhh fair enough. I feel if he were playing awful the game would’ve been an easy W for them. He saved the team’s ass way more than they him.

I voted him a star. Fox was the other two for me. No worries about disagreeing
