I've been watching highlights and Panarin seems fatigued or something, also making a lot of turnovers, which he did in the Ottawa game which led to the 2nd goal. He can't be 100% healthy.

He just isn't in great shape for whatever reason. I think he will pick it up and play himself into form. But like from the preseason until now, you see him showing signs of being gassed in some situations which isn't typical of him. He still performs, make plays late in shifts, I love the player for sure, but I would like bet a good amount that his like Vo2max is significantly worse this year than last or the year before that.

Hes also making terrible passes, leading to multiple turnovers . He hasnt looked sharp at all. I know its not the most important stat to some people, but him having the worst plus/minus on the team isnt a good look for him

We're among the league leaders in points in the standings, but we've got to be the worst team among them. Our goal differential is +1 while most of the others are positive in the double digits. We've managed to eke out wins late in games following truly putrid stretches of hockey. Panarin and Zib have got to pull their heads out of their asses sooner than later.

After last year when we were one of the best teams in the league in +/- for most of the season but didn't make the playoffs I don't care about that stat.

Tell the league. It's one of the criteria for tiebreakers when teams finish with the same points.

But forget the stat for the second, you can't deny that we've played from not-to-great to downright-shitty hockey to get to 4-1-1.

Are you going to stop ragging on the goalies if we win the game in the end?

I’d rather be good at winning close than suck at it and have a huge positive GD because we kicked the balls off of the likes of Arizona, Seattle and Chicago.

But they do need to start playing better or else the games won’t be close enough when they play better teams for them to pull off 3rd period magic. And really it’s that they have to generate more quality chances. Panarin being Howden has hurt, but there are deeper issues there which won’t sort themselves out as easily.

I’ve been happy with the group defensively. They’ve given up a lot of volume, but not a whole lot of quality.

Yeah, but being gassed and making poor decisions kind of goes hand in hand.

On Fox, there are a lot of comments about how he makes plays ‘only he can make’.

But to put that in perspective, I’ve seen a bunch of players do exactly what he does. It’s not even uncommon. I played 3-4 tier hockey in Sweden and Finland, and some qualification games against 2nd tier teams. Every now and then some experienced SHL player wound up on a 3-4 tier team for whatever reason. This type of hockey is exactly what you could see. You hear jokes like ‘Have you seen X play in the 3rd tier league? All he has to do to beat a defender is first raise his left eyebrow, second skate to the right’, I mean, that is how it looks sometimes.

Fox skill set isn’t dominant overall, but he has worked tremendously on exactly the right things. He does get a jump on a player in many situations because his edge work and first step is great. But more than anything, he is in total control and a step ahead most opponents. When you move on the ice your “posture”, in lack of better words, completely limits your alternatives. Ie if you lean to the left, it takes a second extra to get going to the right. When someone moves down 2-3 tiers, you get the same effect. Everyone coming at the player just advertise their intentions so clearly that the player just has to wait them out.

That Fox can do this at the NHL level is really special.
Nice post. In somewhat the same context, all too often I have noticed that a player having a puck in the corner that "double dekes", often finding himself right back to where the chasing player is. One deke would have been suffice to lose him. Anyone notice similar? Cannot be my imagination, I'm not that smart.
