Is the Garden relaxing their media policy? Sather was on the NHL Network talking to Kathryn Tappen and Kevin Weekes on Monday from the GM meetings in Boca. Jeff Gorton is talking to Pat Leonard about a player acquisition. Twice in 3 days. That has to be a record.

The Rangers beat out the Hawks

The Chicago Blackhawks were also interested in Haggerty. But the lure of playing for the team he rooted for made the decision easy for Haggerty.

“The Rangers were my idols of [Mark] Messier and [Adam] Graves, Theo Fleury and when [Jaromir] Jagr was here,†Haggerty said. “It’s incredible. I’ve always been a huge fan of the Rangers. Growing and watching them, it’s pretty surreal [to sign with them]. It’s hard to even imagine that dreams come true, but I’m looking forward to the future, too.â€

2 out of 4 isn't bad. ;)

"It came together pretty quickly," Haggerty said. "There were a few teams knocking at the door. I had to figure out what the situation was. I'm very excited to join this organization.

"It's New York," he added. "It's the biggest city in America for a reason, one of the biggest sports towns."

Before moving to RPI, Haggerty was in the USNTDP in the USHL. He also played on both the U17 and U18 WJC teams. The leading scorer on that U18 WJC team was J.T. Miller. Miller was also on the U17 WJC team with Haggerty.

Haggerty was an invite to the 2012 Prospect Development Camp for us. Kyle Jean also attended, who we later signed to an ELC. That camp had some good unsigned/undrafted guys: Myles Bell (NJD pick), Troy Grosenick and Barclay Goodrow (SJ UDFA signings), and Dane Fox (VAN UDFA signing). The Rangers do a good job identifying undrafted talent.

The team has probably had Haggerty on their radar for at least three years. Gorton isn't blowing smoke when he says that Haggerty has improved every year--the Rangers have been on hand in some form to see it. I don't know much about Haggerty's game, but I feel good knowing that the Rangers have an extensive scouting history of the kid and aren't signing him solely because of one good season.

so why they sign Kyle Jean, just because of a good prospect camp... he should have been signed to an AHL deal if anything.. he is horrible. im glad they waited on Haggerty, i wish they would have signed Fox and Goodrow.. depth is not a bad thing..

You're really good at hindsight GMing.

This is what allows for the trading of draft picks. Don't know much about him at all since I don't watch the ECAC. Quality of play in that league never caught my attention much.

Union is No. 3 in the country.

Quinnipiac is No. 7

Cornell is No. 13

Colgate is No. 17

Yale is No. 18

The ECAC is well represented in the top 20 in NCAA Div. 1 Mens hockey National Rankings.

You sign Kyle Jean to an NHL deal because there are other teams bidding for his service, and you think he's worthy of an NHL deal. Obviously, they were wrong, and he's not worthy of the deal. The scouts were wrong and he's not an NHL prospect. **** happens. They were right with Girardi--should they not have signed him because Tommy Pock wasn't any good? Should we have bypassed Talbot because Matt Zaba didn't pan out? Should we have let Zuccarello go because Andreas Ambuhl was a flop? These UDFA players are hit and miss. There's not much downside, though, other than a contract spot. We do a very good job with undrafted players, so I don't know why you get hung up on stupid stuff like Kyle Jean.

Like we discussed, he plays the Stamkos side on the power play. The one-timer s so important in this new era of goaltenders with quick movement, his willingness to use it is a good sign.

Carey will probably sign shortly after this weekend if SLU doesn't upset Colgate, and it will probably be with the Leafs, so it's a good thing that we picked this kid up first.

Like I say, if we're trading picks, we should be mining the hell out of the NCAA.

Shouldn't they be doing their best to find talent in all avenues regardless?

The best kids often get bid up with bonuses, which can make their ELC's tough to fit under the cap. Sometimes the best kids get close to a 3 million cap hit playing in the NHL. So, sometimes if you have a solid set of prospects, it isn't worth it to bid up undreafted players.

But I do wish they scouted the NCAA more. I see Dallas, Toronto, Philadelphia everywhere. Either the NYR scouts come in disguise or they aren't here.

Ales Kotalik made a nice career out of being able to score the exact kind of goals Haggerty is scoring in that video, despite the fact that he was a subpar skater and didn't have many other plus talents.

Always worry about a guy with a high number of PPGs being able to repeat that at higher levels/year over year, but he looks promising.

interesting move here. ive seen some of this kid. saw rpi play cornell and clarkson and he played well both times.

i just spoke to my buddy at oswego state who knows this kid and his comments were this.

goal scorer. bull dog. great hands strong shot. built solid and skates really well. hes developed a knack for scoring big goals and does good work down low.

played with miller on the u18 team and another product of the usndp. seems to me that slats and co are really comfortable taking kids out of the usndp. if i was gonna venture a guess thats where our next high draft pick will come from.

hard to argue with this kind of fa signing. low risk here and goal scorers can always find work.

Interesting move. Interesting player. Basically these are the attributes of a future NHLer. This would draw a good scouts attention. Then you move it up the chain to where Gorton and Clarke have a look. I trust those guys and the Rangers scouting dept. generally. They liked what they saw enough to put pen to paper. That says something right there. It will be interesting to see if he gets any ice time. My gut tells me the Rangers are trying to put the pieces in place for a potential draft day move.

We now have 52 players under contract for this season. Donnay and Duclair slide, so it counts as just 50. If we sign anyone else in the next month or so, it's going to have to be to a deal that begins next season.

Aside from the NHL guys with expiring deals, we'll have quite a few guys coming off the books during the summer: Beach, Wilson, Jean, Bourque, Missiaen and Stajcer are all RFA's that will potentially (likely) be non-tendered. Powe, Asham, Bickel, Johnson, Haley, Syvret and Leneveu are UFAs. There's going to be a ton of spots open. Expect another ELC signing (beginning next year) or two, and a handful of guys brought in on AHL deals or PTOs.

Agree, and this doesn't take into account Boyle, Moore, Carcilo, Stralman, Falk, Diaz, Pouliot and Richards potential termination.
