Yeah, this seems like a stop gap move. Even though Boyle is the type of player that the Rangers need(hard shooting right handed Dman); he is WAY too old for a team that plays quite a bit on quickness/puck possession.

This has bust written all over it. But, if this is Sathers only big "marquee" move; I can live with it.

I just hope he doesn't try to make room for a guy like Statsny.

It is a stop gap move but why is that a problem? When we traded for Marty we essentially announced we are going for it now. It's a perfectly fine time to get a stop gap. In two years the cap hit will come off and we can reevaluate if we want to bring him back (if he doesn't retire), if he we have a prospect who can play, if there is somewhere else we can allocate the funds. Boyle is pretty much the exact player that we have been lacking. It's always been that top tier center and right handed offensive defenseman. Now we have one of them.

I don't mind signing Boyle, but I wish the rangers also signed Gilbert or perhaps re-signed Stralman for insurance on the 2nd pair.

How do you know the power play is better? They haven't played yet.

Dan Boyle was surrounded by a vastly superior offensive team in San Jose. His power play stats were inflated.

And, you don't pay a guy 4.5 per year to be a 3rd pair power play specialist that may not even improve the power play as planned.

You pay a guy that does everything else 4.5, and trade Staal for the power play upgrade.

That is the smart move.

Not dumping a load of cash onto a player on his last tours.

San Jose's top line PP forwards are not vastly better than ours. Much better at center, comparable at the wing.

Only way this works is if Boyle improves the powerplay. If he can actually provide us a consistent powerplay QB, I'm fine. Us with a dangerous powerplay offsets any losses this offseason in my mind. More confident scorers, less tight games against bad teams, it's just a good thing.

Other thing I just thought about.

Anyone else encouraged by the fit geographically. If the concerns are mostly about conditioning, and they are, then maybe a move not only to the less wear and tear East, especially to the team with the least travel miles of anyone, could help...

I would hope that (with how our PP performed after the Olympic break) it has nowhere to go but up.

Nobody can predict Dan Boyle's impact on the Powerplay. 'Should' improve it, but that's about it for now. I believe nothing til I witness it, but I have no problem with this signing.
I mean, you have to look at it as the Rangers still being in win now mode, and trying to fix something that most definitely was broke. I can't blame them for that, and I welcome Dan Boyle aboard.

Expecting both Boyle AND St Louis to completely fall off the table this year as age catches up to them hard. Just two more players to come to the Rangers Retirement Home and Country Club for fat paychecks and failed expectations.

Honestly it's just as likely that taking Richards off the powerplay has an addition by subtraction effect. He was so bad back there.

Well, Boyle left money on the table to sign here.

I think we saw MSL's mindset when he played at a time when no one would blame him if he didn't. And he contributed.

The main reason he was bad back there was the lack of mobility.

And by no coincidence, is my main concern.

I'm praying Boyle works out.

dude enough, you've been at it like you're getting paid. it's non stop stralman whining from you and Zil for the past 2-3 days.

Stralman scored 1 friggin goal all season. he signed for 5 yrs with TB, he'll put up 5g there.. great. He's solid steady player, but enough...

we just dodged rosival 2.0

9 hours later and I'm still okay with this signing. You don't improve a team against the Cap by bringing back the same exact group, except for whatever improvement comes naturally through growing youth. It's a bit of a gamble that Dan Boyle's ability to move the puck in offensive situations will trump Stralman's ability to transition the puck in defensive situations. But, again, you don't improve a team in our situation by maintaining the status quo.

I'm taking a wait-and-see stance on Boyle. I wanted no part of him at the $5-5.5m I thought he would cost (and would have cost if we were any other team). At $4.5m, I can accept him for what he is. Two year term not a huge deal, either.

and that's only the beginning... they just declared war and they reinstated the draft. There's a food shortage, the water supply is tainted, they're spraying us from the planes again

Just be a fan of a different team
