Confirmed with Link: Rangers sign Blake Wheeler [1Y/800K]

Because continuing to block and hold back your #1 and #2 overall picks in favor of 37 year olds is how to destroy your own team. Do you want to win Cups? Do you want your team to be successful like other teams have done? Treating your 1 and 2 overall as second and 3rd rate citizens is how you don't become successful.

Show me a team that's done that and won Cups?

I'll show you every Cup winning team sans Vegas that won because of their high picks, not because of 35+ year old UFA signings.

Two coaches prioritized vets and scrubs over those picks, the next one won't? It's an organizational issue, it's not even the coach's call at this point. They'll block Laf and Kakko, deny them the opportunities that 1 and 2 overalls historically get, and then when they're not as productive they'll trade them citing lack of growth, and they'll boom somewhere else.

What I'm annoyed at is the complete lack of self awareness this organization has.

The fan base complains they can't develop forwards, and wonder why? Because they refuse to do it properly that's why. They're gifted Ferraris but can't help themselves to prefer a broken down Daewoo.
Oh please. Nobody is going to be blocked. They signed Wheeler because it was a need. Laf and Kakko will both get plenty of ice time and plenty of opportunity with Lavy. They need to produce when they get the opportunity and maybe we need to stop blaming the organization.

We haven't seen any evidence from any Rangers coach that this is what will happen.

What does it matter? The plan should be to roll the top 3 lines almost equally at 5v5.

So what you’re saying is Drury should have spent more money on an inferior player so as to make sure his coach played Lafreniere or Kaako more? Because Wheeler is pretty much at the minimum salary at this point.

Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Kaako
Panarin-Chytil-Wheeler
Kreider-Trochek-Vesey

Or

Kreider-Zibanejad-Kaako
Panarin-Trochek-Vesey
Lafreniere-Chytil-Wheeler

Or

Panarin-Zibanejad-Vesey

Lafreniere-Trochek-Kaako

It really doesn’t matter. Laviolette has a lot of options to move guys around and see what works. The key is to just roll those lines and let them play.

Wheeler is likely a PP2 guy in NY anyways.

Completely disagree

Why is Wheeler holding back Lafreniere or Kaako? For one he plays RW, and two, Wheeler is more of a middle-6 guy at this point. He’s also a bull along the boards and fantastic at breaking up plays.

Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Kaako
Panarin-Chytil-Wheeler
Kreider-Trochek-Vesey

These are good lines. Who is he blocking?
I’ll be shocked if those are the lines. If Laviolette breaks up Zib and Kreider I will take back everything bad I’ve said about him so far. I think the initial top mince is going to look more like this:

Kreider-Zib-Kakko
Panarin-Trochek-Vesey
Laf-Chytil-Wheeler

I am actually intrigued to see how Wheeler does in that spot. He should at least bring an assertiveness and willingness to shoot on that line that Kakko has not been able to bring.

We need to get out from under Bread in the worst way.

Fills our biggest need for a 2 RW. Pretty excited to see how he fits with any of our top 3 centers. Even if he has 75 percent of the speed we are used to seeing him display it's really a homerun.

Wheeler is the opposite of a shooter, he's a playmaker plain and simple.

I don’t disagree. I’m intrigued to see how he does with a new coach.

The team needed another Kaako pretty badly. Wheeler is as close to that as they could get.

In a vacuum I'm fine with Wheeler. But I don't have faith in the organization to use him right. And there is no way 3 lines will be used equally.

For a lot of the season Laf and Kakko were coming in at a little over 12 minutes. That's not enough.

CHI, LAK, PIT, TBL, WSH, ANA, COL, DET... all of these teams especially the repeats, have won with their high picks leading the way. They won after years of allowing those picks to develop in leadership roles in all the big spots of games. Not one of them won because they loaded up on UFAs and aging vets while denying their top picks top 6 and PP1 time.

Vegas is the only outlier. Maybe STL but not really.

But Rangers will continue to do their thing and fail like they've done for the last 80+ years except once in 94 when the few home grown leaders were hall of fame or borderline hall of fame caliber.

Did they succeed giving those minutes and roles to Copp, Vatrano, Kane, Tarasenko, Goodrow, Hunt, Blais... Maybe give those minutes and roles to the 1st and 2nd overall picks and see where it goes.

Maybe leave opportunities for their other high profile young players like Othmann and Cuylle. They refuse to do what's been proven by the league to work. They're stubborn and want to do it their way and their way doesn't work.

The 12 minutes of ES time is a little low but it depends on the game. Those kids need to be playing PK and/or PP. Kaako should be on both. Lafreniere should be on the PP. they also need to limit PP1’s time out there. This is coaching.

The GM gets the players.

Lafs ES time for the season was closer to 14 than 12.
