Confirmed with Link: Rangers sign Blake Wheeler [1Y/800K]

This guy put up 55 points last season and we signed him for peanuts. People saying we don’t need him are the same people that wanna resign all of last years players and expect a different result

He will be 37 by the time the season starts. He's slow. We really need a 37 year old blocking our #1 overall pick from getting the top six opportunities he needs to grow into the player we need?

Put him on the 3rd line and that problem is solved. He's got strong CF% numbers and this team is certainly short on RW's. Not sure what the negativity is about other than your ASSUMPTION that the golden child will be "blocked".

We needed a RW desperately. 55-60 point guy. I don't care if he is going to be 37. He can still play and it's a 1 year cheap as shit deal. Laf and Chytil will get plenty of ice time. They need to take advantage and start to produce so we don't have to sign guys like Wheeler next year.

i don’t know what you guys want. they got a player that’s still very effective for borderline no money. they don’t have the cap to do anything else
I think thats what some want - is the shedding of some of these deals holding them back

Shestyorkin isnt getting younger; hes the Cup window, not Laughreniere

Its part of the template

Last 4 Cup winners had lines playing roles. Making a role neutral top9 is more of the same.
Third lines need some matchup ability or defensively youre in trouble at ES

Who are they going to shed exactly? Panarin with NMC? Trouba with his NMC? Kreider? Mika? Fox? Next off season is the first year they will realistically be able to trade somebody like Trouba when his NMC becomes a NTC. Shesterkin is 27. I don't think he's ready for social security yet.

Most players (historically speaking) waive when asked and told they'll go somewhere theyd enjoy

Trouba needs to be first though so this year, next year - so be it, just make sure hes gone before 2025

I understand our fanbase is notoriously whiny but I don’t understand how you can hate this move. 800K for a guy who yes is not the player he once was but can still be effective and put up 55 pts last year seems like a no brained. Fans acting like we had tons of cap since you go after anyone
Because continuing to block and hold back your #1 and #2 overall picks in favor of 37 year olds is how to destroy your own team. Do you want to win Cups? Do you want your team to be successful like other teams have done? Treating your 1 and 2 overall as second and 3rd rate citizens is how you don't become successful.

Show me a team that's done that and won Cups?

I'll show you every Cup winning team sans Vegas that won because of their high picks, not because of 35+ year old UFA signings.

Two coaches prioritized vets and scrubs over those picks, the next one won't? It's an organizational issue, it's not even the coach's call at this point. They'll block Laf and Kakko, deny them the opportunities that 1 and 2 overalls historically get, and then when they're not as productive they'll trade them citing lack of growth, and they'll boom somewhere else.

What I'm annoyed at is the complete lack of self awareness this organization has.

The fan base complains they can't develop forwards, and wonder why? Because they refuse to do it properly that's why. They're gifted Ferraris but can't help themselves to prefer a broken down Daewoo.

Laf is not a ferrari lmfao

Never saw anyone hold Laf back. Other than Bread, Laf played around the same amount of even strength time as our other wingers give or take 30 seconds. He played more even strength time than Kreider.

Why is Wheeler holding back Lafreniere or Kaako? For one he plays RW, and two, Wheeler is more of a middle-6 guy at this point. He’s also a bull along the boards and fantastic at breaking up plays.

Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Kaako
Panarin-Chytil-Wheeler
Kreider-Trochek-Vesey

These are good lines. Who is he blocking?

We haven't seen any evidence from any Rangers coach that this is what will happen.
