Confirmed with Link: Rangers sign Blake Wheeler [1Y/800K]

1 year at 800K is a joke. Dude is making Ben Harpur money for 1 year no less.
The real question is why couldn't we make signings like this last year.

He’s getting his money from Winnipeg as well, he’s not making just 800k lol

FYI Don Maloney drafted Al Montoya with our pick right after Wheeler was drafted. Blake was only a 17 year old high school junior at that time

Team is paper thin at RW. Drury signs a RWer who put up 55 points in 72 games last season to an 800k one year deal.

This is highway robbery. I really don’t understand anyone who thinks otherwise. Wheeler is slow? Ok. He’s also big and a veteran who knows how to score in this league. Also, it needs repeating, you don’t need a team full oh Hagelins and McDavids to be fast. You can play fast without having a roster full of burners. It’s about how you play. Quick decisions with the puck, everyone being on the same page, good puck support.

The question is do we play a system that will finally support speed with the slow guys we've got? Probably not.

How can you say that yet, they haven’t even had a training camp under Laviollette yet. I know as Rangers fans were predisposed to be negative but lately it’s been really bad around here. Theres plenty to like. Better coach, improved depth, kids growing, Igor more experienced dealing with ups and downs now. Lots to like.

It's hard not to be pessimistic when our system has been the exact same since even the Torts days. We've just become lazier since then. If you want to go all in on Lavi when you have no idea what the output would be, then that's fine, but you can't thumb your nose as being skeptical about this team.

AV’s system was a lot different from Torts’ so not sure how you can say the system hasn’t changed since Torts. AV came in and had almost the exact same roster as Torts and had them playing extremely fast, uptempo counterattack style. It was completely different from Torts’ team’s play style and is a good example of how much of a difference a new coach can make.

I see a roster that is much improved and has more depth. The majority of last season we had Goodrow and Vesey both as top 9 RWers. Jake Leschicken was our 4c for half the season. Ben Harpur played way too many games.

There’s more depth, more redundancy if kids can’t pull their weight. Gustafson is a perfect PMD 3LD to bring in. If Jones beats him out, great, if not then you’re not stuck with Harpur in that spot you have a veteran who can give you exactly what you need. Wheeler isn’t what he once was but he’s still an effective middle 6 winger. Bonino is a very solid 4c still and a terrific PKer. Pitlick is a very solid 4th liner. No more Jake L, no more Carpenter.

While the value of the signing is there, I have a distinct sinking feeling that we're going to end up with Kid Line 2.0 this season

I just don't understand the "Old Rangers are back" mentality with this signing. Old Rangers would have given him 3 years at 4 M per. This is the type of deal we never get. This is the perfect signing.

This x1000000

Look at all the ridiculous contracts handed out yesterday, none of them was us.
I mean, thank god we have no cap space to even propose anything stupid, but still.

Absolutely unusual FA signings for us.
