I didn't want ek65 or panarin.

That said I'll take panarin at this contract over what ek65 got 10 out of 10 times.

1 less year, and no injury history.

Let me also say, for the record... Panarin is unquestionably an elite top 15ish player in the world.

My only issue here is how he plays in years 5, 6 and 7 of the contract.

Time will tell, history is not on his side tho

Other than him being Not Spooner why do we like Strome? 1.32 points/60 despite shooting almost 17% himself. That's really bad production. In addition to some terrible possession statistics, one of the lowest shot rates in the league, and a lot of penalties.

The other concern is that does anyone reasonably expect him to shoot 22 percent again in a Ranger uniform, or even 17 percent when averaged between here and Edmonton? That's about double his career average.

If we're talking about buying out someone who would have minimal effect on this year or next year, that player is Ryan Strome.

$3.1m cap hit, RFA at years end.

They would save $2.67m this season with only a minimal cap hit next year.

Smith gives them $3.379m in savings this year, not much next year but those final 2 years of $1.145m in dead cap seem like they may be painful.

Staal's is almost identical o Smith;s although it provides more savings next year and less in the first year

Shattenkirk's gives the most this season but is horrible next year to the point they couldn't even replace him with the money they save and has the worst 3rd and 4th yer dead cap hits

If Strome can be a utility guy who can provide 40 points, in a variety of different roles, I'll be thrilled.

When we start getting into hoping for a solid second line center, I think that's tended to be where the wheels have fallen off for Strome during his tenure as an NHL player.

In my mind, the whole thing about Strome as a 2C is that he’s barely serviceable there, but that’s ok when you’re aiming for him to be your fallback if none of the kids can grab the opportunity. In other words, I don’t really think of him as a real option. Just one that can fill in for the short term.

And he probably could. It probably depends on how one defines short term and serviceable.

They are going to have some issues just signing their RFAs at this point without making some other stuff happen, how does his percentage not worry you much?

Kreider would be traded whether we signed Panarin or not. I like both Names and Strome, but neither is likely to be part of the long term solution, so if one gets moved, it's not a big deal. I would rather have moved Kreider before signing Panarin, but it didn't work out that way. We'll see how much us needing to clear cap affects the return, but this isn't a Marleau type deal. Tampa managed to get good value for Miller despite their cap situation.

Once we are cap compliant, we should be fine for a while, as it should be at least 2 years before we need to hand out any big contracts. By then, most of our big contracts will be off the book.

We need to move namestnikov. That’s the biggest issue on this club. 4 mil for a guy that has no place here. What’s his buyout look like?

It's a $1.3M buyout next year, but why would we waste time buying him out? Either try trading him this summer since we knew there has recently been interest in him, or just play him and move him at the deadline. There's no need to buy him out when he only has one year left on his contract.

Unless it becomes absolutely necessary due to future additions, I just don't see the point in buying out anyone at this time.

There's also a very real possibility that we don't even have the option.

Agree. Strome is a good 3rd liner on a contending team. He is the 2C here by default. The recent interest in Zegras and talks about a trade on draft day for him show the rangers are not content with the 2C spot as it stands. They will continue to pursue options there via by trade or the draft with trades.

I still think they'd prefer sending a guy down to Hartford over a buy out.

So they are going to wait two years, until Panarin is 30, where some of their entry levels end, or will end a year later, to go for it?

Yeah, as they should. No sense gumming up the cap for 3-4 years if we can wait and minimize it to 1-2 years or nothing at all. Unless we make some additions and it becomes vital, I don't think it's worth it. And again, all this talk is predicated on someone filing for arbitration, which may not happen.

We need to move Names and Smith. That will get us the salary relief we need.

I think in the next 1-2 weeks when teams miss out on some free agents / moves they will have an idea what their cap situation is like and see what other options there are

I feel like we are starting to go in circles. As I said in my first post, my concern with Panarin is that we would try to force the issue rather than let the kids develop, or conversely, that we would waste Panarin's prime while waiting for them to develop.

If we didn't sign Panarin, we'd still have to wait 2 years for those contracts to come off the books before we could realistically compete for the cup. Let's just hope that the kids develop quickly and that Panarin remains elite for most/all of his contract.
