Pretty much. That or Gorton needs to eek out the last bit of his voodoo magic to make one of Shattenkirk, Smith or Staal disappear.
Honestly, I think that at this point, Smith serves as a 4th liner for them and drops back on D when needed. And honestly seeing how some of the teams are building, the Rangers will need some more snarl. Especially with such a young roster.

Staal, not going anywhere. And Shattenkirk is a lost cause.

I think this actually may work to our favor. Flat cap helps keep this number a little lower, and then if the cap balloons a bit after the USA tv deal then all that added money is used for our rfa kids while our elite veteran winger is locked in at a lower number. Remember the heart attacks with contract aavs on new deals even three years ago, and now we have players signing for eight figures regularly.

Good point.

we have to get rid of a bunch of cap hits now...there is literally nothing they can do for this year but let things play out and see how good the kids are...there is no adding more guys to win now. there is no cap space

I guess I don't understand the logic, why sign a win now player who has only some amount of prime years left, then wait for the other cap hits to go away, which would also include wasting a cheap entry level contract year(s) of several of their other players?

but we knew that the whole time...you were risking the early years on the contract because the team isn't that good

This is a huge signing for you guys simply because it will help take the spotlight and pressure off Kakko, Kravtsov, Chytil as they grow into the NHL.

This is my take. Panarin is fertilizer for the über kids way more than he is for winning now.

He will take pressure of them cause he’s a #1 in a way that Kreider or Zucc or Hayes or even Zib could never have been.

At the same time, he’s young enough to be a real legit top 6 winger when the kids are ready to compete.

For now, I wouldn’t mind one more lost-ish season, to be accomplished by trading Kreider, Namestnikov, Vesey (already happened), maybe even Strome or Fast, and a defensive veteran or two, and really kinda letting the inexperience result in another non-playoff year. Get one more lottery pick. Plus with ammo from a Kreider trade, we could even package the picks to move up from say, 10 or 12, into the top 6, and be ready to roll the season after.

I would think the Rangers are all ears for a young center at this point. Even if it costs them Buchnevich.

I think they will wait until the deadline for that. One more run with Chytil, Andersson, Howden to see if something pops.

What this does for Mika I can’t even quantify. He put up 70 plus points with absolute trash on his wings half the year. The other half was with moparello

I think Mika takes a huge leap forward this year.

It also does so much for the Russian kids Kravtsov especially. Has a role model now to really show him what it takes to be a star.
Brilliant

Knowing it and it making sense I guess I find to be different things?

If they are going to make this signing, then I think their best bet is to create cap space in some manner. Whether that means buy outs, or attaching good to get rid of bad, they are only going to have 2 entry level years left of several of their prospects and three of the others to either go for it or not before the cap catches up to them.

very conflicted on the deal...love panarin...feels like so many mistakes in the past so definite fear there...

the only thing i'm sure of right now is that I trust JG & JD and the process that is happening.

Not a big fan of this but I'm not surprised at all. Again, I think it's a lot easier for us as fans to write off entire seasons to rebuilding than it is for the people who are actually involved. What's the average shelf life of a GM in this league? What about coaches? You think anyone wants to be the one to tell Henrik Lundqvist that he's going to play the last years of his career for uncompetitive teams?

Again, I would have preferred if we stayed far away from this but I'm not in the least bit surprised.

I wanted us to wait a little longer before trying to contend, but can anyone really argue against the signing?

I don't think this move happens if we don't win one of the top two picks in the draft lottery. Hughes and Kakko were the only two players in the draft that could make the jump directly to the NHL.

I don't think this move happens if we don't also land Trouba. We had a huge void on our top pair, and the right side in general.

Think about what we've gained in just a few short months:
Kakko
Panarin
Trouba
Fox
Lemieux
2021 3rd

At the cost of:
Hayes
Pionk
Zuccarello
Vesey
2019 2nd
2020 2nd

We just made huge, huge, huge upgrades to our roster. I'm still concerned as to how we're going to shed some cap, but I'm sure Staal will come down with some degenerative eye condition that will mysteriously force him to LTIR.

Those assists are on goals yeah?

He can’t play w Krav, Buch, Kakko and Chytil (probably) right? Kreider is getting dealt for sure now. Strome? Namestnikov?

We’ll see. I would LOVE to be wrong

I’m just saying, if he gets 40 assists, 10 could be on PP1 and the remaining 30 could be on the second line. I don’t think that’s far fetched for someone of his caliber. But, as you say, we shall see. Heck — we don’t even know how the coaches intend to use him.

Pushes Lias down to the 4th line for the foreseeable future where he belongs that’s for sure!

This signing is not for THIS year, it is not turning the team into immediate contenders. They still have tons of questions on D, though Trouba helps. They still have tons of rookies and sophomores on the roster. They still have a relatively green head coach. Having Panarin in place cements a cornerstone of the rebuild, gives all of our young talent a great vet to learn from and our coach to lean on.

20 mill in cap space being freed up after this season, 25 million the year after (the important one, with Staal Smith Shattenkirk and Lundqvist). Cap going up in 2 years with a new TV deal AND Seattle expansion. We still have lots of kids in the pipeline to keep infusing youth (read ELCs) into the lineup. By the time Gorton has to give big money to any of our potential young stars we will have cap space in spades, and Panarin having only 3-4 years left will look pretty good at his cap hit with the cap going up by then, especially instead of signing some other dude to a 7 year deal at that point.

And why not?

Absent something slightly unforeseen, like Kakko or Kravtsov slotting in as your future #1C, Buch has suddenly become no better than your fourth winger in the top 6. You aren’t gonna at that guy top dollar; you probably need more of a gritty, well rounded winger as your compliment there anyway (Lias Andersson?). Buch may not even be a second liner if Andersson or Chytil surpass him.

If you can move Buch, either in a package or not, for a young top 6 center with upside, you do it all day long.
