I live in Jersey and fly exclusively from Newark so almost everywhere I fly is on United. So for me personally it makes sense to have this card.
I'm not sure why but I'm still holding on to the Amex Platinum. I originally got it when it got you into Continental's President's Club. I use the awards from the Amex platinum for hotels and us the United Mileage Plus Club card for United Flights.
I should probably downgrade to Amex gold for the lower annual fee. Do you know if there are any differences in the rewards between Platinum and Gold Amex?

In your case I totally get it. For me, since I don't travel for business, when I fly it's often internationally for pleasure, and I prefer to book non-stop partner awards in business class. United is pretty much no longer an option for that due to their horrible new partner award chart (what cost ~100k miles several months ago now costs ~160k.)

As far as Amex Gold vs. Platinum I honestly don't know, as I have the SPG Amex. I have learned quite a bit on Gary Leff's "View From the Wing" blog. Pretty sure I've seen him post about the differences there before.

Closing cards is also bad. That's why you should really try to limit yourself to a max of one per year.

No it's not, like broadwayblue was saying it's about your oldest account. You never close your oldest card, but everything since is fine. The only issue that can come up is every time you get a new card there's a credit inquiry and the number of inquiries per year does go to you score. Not sure what the number is to take a hit but you're probably 100% safe at half a dozen or so

My family uses the Platinum Amex mostly for benefits relating to international travel: Global entry, lounge access, $200 airline credit per year, flat rate car rental protection & discounted Hertz rates and perks, no foreign transaction fees, to name a few. Also important are superb customer service, extended warranty, and refunding goods/services we buy and are not happy with. The "unlimited" credit line comes in handy with larger purchases such as Rangers tickets...
I am not sure if these benefits exist for the Gold card, but so far we have had no intention to downgrade even though the card IS pricy. I do believe the money saved by the benefits easily cover the membership fee for us, but that perhaps applies only if you travel internationally several times a year, rent a car, bring a ski bag, etc.

A girl with whom I work used to accept every credit card offer thrown her way. Basically, to get the free gifts. She would use each card the minimum amount to get the gift/perk, pay it off and never use it. When she was buying a house, she had trouble getting a mortgage because she had too much outstanding credit. Had something like 15 cards. 14 hadn't had a balance in a while and the one she actually used she paid off each month in full. The "fear" of the mortgage company that she might go nuts one month, run up the cards and not be able to pay the mortgage etc. Then was told if she closed the accounts it would lower her credit rating. I thought it was ridiculous.

Game 6 is likely to be a decent market. At first was going to go, but didnt realize it was Mothers Day. Wife was undecided if she really wanted to go on Mothers Day. Put up on stubhub for $240 (buyer paid $254) and they sold in about 2 hours. 213 row 21. $104 face, 93.60 after the 10% rebate.

If you travel by United Airlines most of the time I would recommend the Chase United MileagePlus Club Card There is an annual fee of $395 per year but it features the following benefits:
You get 1.5 miles for every purchase no exclusions. Mileage builds up in a hurry
You get 2 X miles for United Airlines ticket purchases.
1st and 2nd checked bags are free for you and one other person traveling with you if booked with your card.
Free access to the United Presidents Club for you and one person travelling with you.

If you fly United one time during the course of the year with one other person and you check two bags each you will be saving $240.00 total just for that one trip so it really helps offset the annual cost of the card.

I would have recommended that card prior to the recent bloodbath of a devaluation that United just unveiled. Their new award chart (particularly as relates to partner awards) is beyond dreadful. If you travel a lot on United metal the card could still be a decent choice...but otherwise there are better options imo.
What did they slash?

My wife and I have the United Mileage Plus Explorer card. Our points are less than above, but we build it up pretty quick.

Living in Staten Island, Newark is by far the most convenient airport for us, which is another benefit of this card for us.

NBC Sports Network has a hockey game plugged in for 7:30 PM on Sunday the 11th with a bunch of other nonsense during the day.
I think we (and Mom's out there) are in good shape.
I am not sure NBC would want to cannabilize themselves by putting hockey on NBCSN while golf is on the main network.

What that means then is, if there are two games, one will be at 4pm, the other at 7:30pm. The only other game scheduled that day is Game 5 Minn / Chicago... Since they are west of us, they'd get the later start. I think the same thing happened last year.

Day killer yet again...

Every game is going for double face in this series.

Half a dozen I'd imagine is fine. I just don't like to play with fire, since CC's are so tempting.

I'd imagine 10-13 like the poster I quoted was referring to is going to be really close to that edge.

It's all about management. I've really managed my credit score to near perfection since I was 15-16. I could probably get more rewards then I do, but I take about one per year and don't get to risky. It's just the way I'm wired. I prefer safety over risky even if the latter provides me potentially larger returns.

But overall, I completely agree. I think having even 6-10 cards is probably relatively safe. But you should really try not to keep them dormant. Rotate cards every 2-3 months so they have activity, etc.

They destroyed the value of the Mileage Plus program.

Read the summary at View from the Wing or One Mile at a Time. Basically they drastically increased the amount of miles needed for travel nearly everywhere except North and South America. If you are like me and enjoy traveling internationally in business or first on partner airlines...well you won't be using United to redeem these awards going forward.

Gotchya. My travel is within the US and Canada, and we are fine with coach.

There was a mislisting of 2 tickets for the NYR game tomorrow for $2/ticket in the 100 level. Unfortunately, I was about 30 seconds too late.

I hope one of you guys got em.

What happens in this case. Does the seller just get ****ed if he made a mistake?

All depends on SH, legally the sale is final if you already downloaded them - but that doesn't always stop them from cancelling the sale (even in the case of new barcodes for MLB tickets as an example). Stubhub is eventually going to get sued six ways to Sunday for all the shady stuff they try to get away with. So many people have told me about sales/buys that have been cancelled on them without consulting or even notice - the tickets just were changed or removed from their accounts. The rule at SH is basically "we do what we feel like on that day". I'd expect at least a couple class action lawsuits to rear their heads eventually

So basically, as a seller, if this happens and you cause enough of a storm, they'll screw over the buyer?

I don't understand how there's not a hard policy on this. IMO, once the tickets are sold they're sold. I don't think you should be allowed to cancel. Just pay attention when you're changing prices. That's on the seller.

I'll tell you one thing, I despise how long it takes to receive the payment in my account.

Perhaps, but they have an MLS soccer game listed during the 4:00 time slot. Does that mean they would bump the MLS? Only in NY and Pitts? Move something to MSNBC?

I guess we root hard for Chicago to win the next two and end the series which assures the 7:30 start.

NBCSN has cycling on at 5pm. Be assured that if both series have game 5's that day, the Rangers will get the 5 pm start since they are east of Chi / Minn. We got the 4:30 pm start last year under similar circumstances.

I am certain there will be no noon start.

So, yes... Root for Chicago to assure a 7:30pm start Sunday night in the Garden... Or root for the Rangers to win three straight, and there won't be a need for game 6.

not quite, obstructed pair went for $26/ticket late, and 2 lowers went for $54

I picked up a single in the lounges for $65

game was a total dud, NHL really f'd us with this schedule

Nice score with the lounge ticket, too bad game sucked. I can only go to game 6 this series, was annoyed I had to sell tonight, but then I watched the game and said thank goodness I made some cash.

Hopefully they can make me regret it on Wednesday.
