I think most level headed people understand that there wasn't a defacto top-rated player at that spot and that the tier included maybe 3-5 players there. One of which was Kravtsov. Perhaps people loved Wahlstrom but is he heads and shoulders better than Kravtsov? I don't think so.

I think the other thing working here is that not many people have seen enough of Kravtsov to state anything definitively.

Yup, all fair.

I was hoping for Wahlstrom, Dobson, or Kravtsov, in that order.

I'll admit that there was some initial disappointment, magnified by Edmonton not cock-blocking the Isles, but this was never a case of management reaching outside of the top end guys. They'd seen a lot more of Kravtsov than any of us, and they decided that he was the right guy to take in that spot: fair enough.

I mentioned this on the main board somewhere, but it feels to me like the network scouting lists that had him late teens/early 20s don’t have the resources to send people to watch him on a whim that NHL teams do, those lists tend to use international tournaments and the odd game here or there to place some of these Russian kids.

That's a good point, and would probably explain why Mackenzie's rankings had him 12th instead.

It's much more prudent for us to defer to management in cases where even our second hand reports are relying on second hand reports.

I had the thought with Kravtsov in particular when the Sportsnet panel was shocked that he was taken 9th when they had him 19th, and while they were talking about him one of the guys on the panel was saying how someone told him that Kravtsov really started to shine when he played some VHL games during the Olympics and then followed that up with his ridiculous playoffs and I thought “is Sportsnet really sending people to go see one kid play 7-8 minutes a night on his KHL team or even to go see VHL games while the Olympics are going on?” And then Button had him at like 28 or something, and Button is notorious for ranking kids based on U18s, U20s, and Hlinka tournaments. And the only network list that had him anywhere close to where he went was McKenzies because he polls people that probably went and watched him play multiple times or were part of a front office that had definitely talked about him while making their own list.

I'm sure the comparison has been drawn already, but Kravstov's game reminds me of Gaborik... great skater with good instincts and a wicked wrister.

I'm sure Wahlstrom will turn into a fine player, but I'm honestly a bigger fan of Kravstov's potential.

Maybe one or two people would of complained about Wahlstrom there; that would of been it.

I went back and read the draft GDT last week, and after Chicago's pick, every single person was excited to be getting Wahlstrom. If anything, the board has reacted with surprising maturity in accepting that Kravtsov was an excellent pick and not a reach.

We can thank Lias and Filip for this. Most learned their lesson in not overreacting since last summer.

Pretty good shift on the powerplay for Lundkvist, saw an opening and snuck down from the left side, called for a pass and got a shot off from the face off dot that the goalie had to come across and save

I don’t know if these games are going to be available to watch in any capacity (I’d assume there will be a stream somewhere), but Kravtsov and Shestyorkin are on the “Russian Olympic National Team” playing in the 2018 Sochi Hockey Open that started today, but their team’s first game is tomorrow (the 4th)

Rykov also is on the team.

Lundkvist is a really good player. Plays in every situation
Like Keane, I think he needs to work on his shot, but it’s better than Keane’s right now and Lundkvist is over a year younger. His movements and decision making are really smooth too, you can tell he’s played a good amount of pro hockey already

Oh I think he’s got a damn good shot actually. If Boqvist ever passed the puck to him we’d see it more.

Keane literally shoots the puck like he’s smacking a bean bag. Horrible shot.

I think he’s got good power to it, but going back to the bits I saw of him last season, he’s got a decent amount of work to do with his accuracy. I do love that he’s constantly slapping his stick on the ice to get Boqvist to pass it to him though, hopefully he gets some of those passes in the third

Here is a link to Brock Otten's review of the 4 Ranger OHL prospects, Keane, Day, Gettinger and Gross. OHL Prospects: 31 Teams in 31 Days - New York Rangers. He is very high on Keane, and has some questions about Gross but concludes for a fourth round pick Gross was a reasonable choice given his potential. Thinks both Day and Gettinger have potential.

Just FYI Brock posted it in a dedicated thread as well.

It's actually not even the 2nd Team Russia (I mean, for KHL only players), rather Team Russia U23. They lost to Ak Bars 4-2, Little Tkachev with 1+1. Kravtsov with 2 minors.

Kid would actually put up some points if Boqvist ever passed the puck to him when he’s wide open on that left side. Boqvist has not impressed me at all in this tourney

I don't often agree with your posts but this one is head on. Boqvist has been in true mid-summer form in this tourney, as has Wahlstrom. Not having good tourneys at all, our dmen are playing pretty well but not seeing offensive success.

Yeah, I missed the USA/Sweden game, but that last game he looked really jittery and was trying to force a lot of plays

Not overly impressed with Lundkvist play either at even strength or PP (I watched both games) especially compared to Keane’s showing. NOT going to make any conclusions as this is a midsummer tournament and for whatever Lundkvist has been slotted on his offside.

On the other hand I’ve been very impressed by Keane in pretty much every aspect, except for shooting which is all about timing/sequence and could very well be due to midsummer.
