I can’t wait until fans say he should not be fighting. I guess they do not remember Graves and Messier fighting. Skilled players are allowed to fight
messier and graves fought at every level they played at. nobody said skill players can't fight, but in many cases it is not advantageous or just straight up a bad idea.

Having your star player in the penalty box for 5 minutes is not a good thing. It's that simple.

I bet no one had an issue when Shannahan fought Brashear. He was sticking up for his teammate. I guess most fans rather have him skate away to the bench.

No one complains when Ovecchkin fights or Crosby fights. I bet their fans enjoy that they lead like that. I bet Flyers fans enjoyed whenever Wayne Simmonds would fight. I bet Rangers fans loved it when Dubinsky fought.

are we really comparing wayne simmonds and brandon dubinsky to nathan mackinnon? i want my superstar player playing. not sitting in the box or at worst missing games cuz he got hurt. someone else on the team can fight.

I mentioned Ovechkin and Crosby

i wudnt want them fighting either. both wud have looked awfully dumb if they got hurt "sticking up for teammates." in crosbys case his are more just temper tantrums where he jumps a player before they even know they are in a fight. those guys almost never fight anyways. both have like 2 fights in the past decade.

Sometimes, players need to defend themselves. Hockey is a contact sport. It happens. I'm glad he can at least stand up for himself and doesn't look around waiting for someone else to protect him. Too many superstars are taught to turn the other cheek. I want someone who will take the bull by the horns when needed and stand up for themselves.

This is not to be misunderstood, you never want a high end player fighting every game but standing up for yourself is important.

I never got the fuss with Turcotte in his draft year (he was CLEARLY behind Zegras and Krebs for me) but I'd be surprised if he busts completely.

If you adjust your expectations for him to become a Copp type contributor, thats very much still a reasonable possibility. He will never be the big time go to guy on your line, but he still does a ton of good things that contribute positively. Granted I haven't really seen him since the WJC a few years ago, but he looked pretty good (unspectacular, but still good) then.

If LA approached us with a Turcotte for Nils trade, I'd do it.

how would you contrast Turcotte vs Villardi or Kupari?

[ ... of course what i really think these teams should do is a deal around K <> Byfield ... their fans keep saying they need a 2way LD w size, and NYR have Jones and roberston to backfill

Honestly, I'm not sure any of them are centers. Kupari is probably the guy I'd want the most of the 3, but thats because hes taking a regular shift in the NHL and has wheels for days.

Vilardi is huge and had a promising rookie campaign, but the regression and history of back issues really worry me. I'd probably throw him in at a clear #3 amongst the 3.

Turcotte has hit a bit of a wall in terms of offensive production, but is the most well rounded of the three.

I wouldn't do that deal for Byfield either. I'd bet anything that K'Andre remains the more valuable player moving forward. Never been a fan of QB.

Byfield is a good prospect, but it would be a mistake to trade Miller for him. Miller is already a top 4 dman on a playoff team. It will be a couple years, likely, before Byfield is making an impact at the NHL level.

Yes, we have Jones and Robertson, but neither of them is Miller. Robertson has the size, but not the skating. Jones has the skating, but not the size. Miller has both.

Turcotte should have a long career as a middle sixer doing all the right things.

Vilardi was slow in junior and hasn't gotten faster. He didnt get moved to LW in the minors for no reason. He can score but I don't think he can keep up.

Kupari reminds me of Brett Howden. That's not meant to be an insult.
