I don't think this needs to be a concern at all. I'm trying to remember but has there ever been one time we needed a contract for a prospect, couldn't get one and lost a prospect as a result?
There was that time Daniel Walcott wouldn't sign so we traded him to Tampa Bay. He didn't end up being anything though.

Was it confirmed that he wouldn't sign? I thought it was just a case of the organization not seeing him as a defenseman and not seeing him as having NHL potential at forward and just getting an asset before letting him walk. Tampa moved him to forward after we traded him.

Sounds like we had the contract to give. He just wouldn't take it.

I am thinking we never have and never will need to worry about needing one of our contract spaces barring some massive overhaul in the system that makes teams more judicious about who gets one

not having a contract in terms of running out of spots on the 50 limit? no. (but i'm not sure how far back that limit excited). but having to sign skinner in 2 years has nothing to do with the contract limit, its about whether or not he is worth signing. we've walked away from tons of guys without signing him. if you picked Skinner thinking that you had 4-5 years to let him bake and now have to sign him in 2 years, is that enough time for him to show the progress you were hoping to see in 4-5 years since he was said to be a long term project?

its an absolute non-issue cause I guarantee the rangers told him to go play juniors and he didn't just do it on his own...that was just my initial reaction of surprise at the move.

for a little random drama got a notification on twitter that hunter skinner followed the islanders lol

Lundkvist is working out at Prentiss in Connecticut. You can hear voices in perfect American accents encouraging him to go harder. Come on bend down. Come on Nik.

The team picture in the background. The players are wearing the Prentiss logo.

I saw Dave Maloney interviewing Lundkvist on MSG 150 that I don't recall anything about the player staying here this summer.

The brass likes the kids staying in NY/the US during the summers. Everything that matters is what you do on the ice, but players can do a good or bad job to prepare for it. A vacation won’t kill anyone, but...

I think Lias clearing his head is huge for him this summer.

Come back with a clean slate and get to work and the kid gets a chance to play with some of the most exciting prospects/players on earth. This is a huge season for Lias.

I had hoped that he would have made the roster for Finland’s WJSS team, but it appears as he didn’t. A bit disappointing.
How big do you think this kid is? His team's site lists him at 139 (!), the Liiga site has him at 148 (!), and then the NHL lists him at 177. That's a huge discrepancy between the first two and what the NHL calls him.

Well, the reality is, SOME guys do go too hard with the partying stuff in the off-season and see a negative impact when camp and the season roll around. Our own Brendan Smith is the perfect example.

Now of course, a single vacation trip shouldn't be any cause for concern. IMO getting in a good place mentally is very important. So, I don't see any problem with Lias (who I was hard on after his demotion) going on holiday like everyone else.

But still, it's disingenuous to act like what you do in the off-season can't/won't affect a your readiness.

As long as Lias has been working on his skating I could care less what he does

Big season for him, will tell us a lot about whether he’s in the future plans

This upcoming season, I expect him to hit 25-30 points. That would be more than Brayden Schenn, Logan Couture, Mark Stone, Mike Hoffman, Johnny Gaudreau, Brock Nelson, David Krejci and Mikael Granlund by the way ;)

Are we seriously criticizing players for going on vacation now? Jesus christ, this is pathetic

Hehe, wrong time of the month eh? Am I really pathetic for that post? But good that you have back up from your little pet @Irishguy42, maybe if you sit on his shoulders you can take a real swing at me instead of all these little jabs... ;)

Give me some benefit of the doubt. It’s his third trip this summer, “not a vacation”. And I didn’t criticize him, he is responsible for his conditioning and I explicitly said that all that matters is what he is able to do on the ice when the season starts. How can you interpret that as me passing judgement on him? Odd.

But management have repeatedly praised the guys staying in NY this summer. They always use words like “Kravtsov is DOING ALL THE RIGHT THINGS” and mention him staying in NY and so forth. That is supposedly the right thing.

My point is this: If Lias performs on the ice this season, nobody will care one bit where he spent his summer and what he did. But if Lias struggles on the ice, doesn’t test extremely well or what not — and didn’t follow the wishes of the organization, it could be something that makes them sour on him. Hence it can be something to keep in the back of the head. Edge have the org possibly considering trading him. If there are any signs of turmoil down the road, maybe this is something that added to that.

@Irishguy42 Ottawa called out Ziba for showing up in bad shape for camp several times. Ziba has himself said that he totally have changed how he prepares for a season. Zibas bro and agent said, with a bit of a smile, that the biggest reason for Ziba “breaking out” this season is that he now has the stamina to skate for a full game.

I don’t think it was baseless to be a little concerned about his conditioning before this turnaround came. If you remember, Ziba was called out for his conditioning in camp his first season here too.
