I think JT Miller is a very good comparison. Physically they follow a similar trajectory. Neither had potential to be dominant players, but they still have/had potential to be really good player. JT Miller was also fairly good immediately after the draft, but needed to straight things out more than anything else.

JTM had
D+1 — 4 pts in 26 games in the NHL and 23 pts in 42 games in the AHL
D+2 — 8 pts in 30 games in the NHL and 41 pts in 42 games in the AHL
D+3 — 23 pts in 58 games in the NHL and 15 pts in 18 games in the AHL
D+4 — 43 pts in 82 games
D+5 — 56 pts 82 games

I wouldn’t mind seeing Lias in the AHL most of the year if he doesn’t stand out quite much from the get go. Lias is different in the sense that he played his entire D-1 in a bit of a depth role in the SHL and he also played 22 games in the SHL in his D-2 season. He needs to play a lot in a bit of a bigger role.

Aren’t you off by a year re. JTM stats? In his D+1 he spent the whole year in the CHL.

Miller:
D+1 — N/A
D+2 — 4 pts in 26 games in the NHL and 23 pts in 42 games in the AHL

D+4 — 23 pts in 58 games in the NHL and 15 pts in 18 games in the AHL
D+5 — 43 pts in 82 games
D+6 — 56 pts 82 games

Lias:
D+1 — 2 pts in 7 games in the NHL and 14 pts in 25 games in the AHL
D+2 — 6 pts in 42 games in the NHL and 20 pts in 36 games in the AHL
D+3 — ??????

You could say Lias is ahead of JT Miller by a year in terms of development.

Going by that their D+2's look kind of similar--4 points in 26 games vs. 6 points in 42--NHL. 23 points in 42 games vs. 20 in 36 games--AHL. There is an argument to be made that Miller had the benefit of playing with better teams but sometimes that means playing on lesser teams you get more opportunity.

Miller is a bit bigger, stronger guy and unless Lias's skating has improved over the summer I'd give JT the edge there too. OTOH it seems JT had issues with his teammmates/coaching staff at times. He was a guy who made the same kinds of mistakes over and over and over again.

This is a big year for Lias--if he can become a regular and contribute 25-30 points he'll be on his way. I see him more as a winger right now or at least if his skating hasn't or doesn't improve much. Center's need to cover territory. The other thing is I think Lias's strengths tend more towards board work and grinding and cycling and crashing the net (he's got a bit of grit) and he's not necessarily a pass first player--that also leans him in my eyes anyway more towards wing.

Looks pretty similar to me.

Leevi Aaltonen is playing against CZE u20 at the moment with the FIN u19 team. Finland leads 2-1 after 2 periods. No points for Aaltonen but he has had some really good shifts, entering the zone with his quick stride. It's fun to watch! 2 shots on goal for the little man

Someone just sent me this (since that account still has me blocked LOL)

I still want to know how heavy he actually is. What his team lists and what Liiga lists and what the NHL provide are massively different.

did he attend the combine? that would be the most recent measurement

I don't think he did. And just to be clear, I'm asking because:

NHL: 177 pounds
KalPa: 63 kg (139 pounds--yikes!)
Liiga: 68 kg (149 pounds--also yikes!)

So, it would be nice to know where he's at. If he's at 150, he can probably get into that 160-170 range, but even then, that's really reserved for like DeBrincat, Point, and Gaudreau, who have absolute elite-level talent. If he's seriously under 140 pounds right now, even at age 18, that's going to be a huge obstacle to overcome. I know the NHL is trending smaller and faster to some degree, but he'd still be incredibly slight of build even after he hopefully filled out.

Of course, if this NHL measurement is more correct, and he's around 170, these concerns of my are irrelevant. Hopefully we see some updated numbers from his team or Liiga in the next month or so.

If Lias turns into a (better) Miller type without being a locker room downer and without his head scratching repeated mistakes in the defensive zone - it's a win!

Lias strikes me as a team oriented player with very good hockey IQ--captain of his WJC team that went to the final game. The big thing is if he can improve his skating a bit really. If he can that should open up a lot of things for him

The brass likes the kids staying in NY/the US during the summers. Everything that matters is what you do on the ice, but players can do a good or bad job to prepare for it. A vacation won’t kill anyone, but...

How tired is this guy going to be to start next season with all this travel.
