Not to be an alarmist or put a big negative spin on this, so don’t get this wrong, but it was a little disappointing for me. He was a big part of their U18 team and I definitely had him slotted on the U20 team. There are some guys on that roster who I thought Aaltonen definitely had a step on. I feel that it’s a bit of a snub by their coach — which always is disappointing when it happens to one of your players. JMHO.

Biggest thing for me is that their coach obviously doesn’t see him as a primary depth option, and that is where — I — see his future, kind of like and Arvidsson/Hagelin type. He has that type of wheels.

I get your point, but Arvidsson and Hagelin are/were top line wingers at their peak. Jason Chimera is the guy who comes to mind when I think "depth player with sick wheels".

Not going to let anyone slander my boy Carl.

How long before we have to sign him? Is it 4 more years?

An NCAA player's rights are retained until the player turns pro or until he finishes his senior year. In some cases, the player spends a year in minor junior hockey before going to college. Steven Fogarty is an example. They retained his rights for a total of 5 years because of this

Retention of NCAA player rights is tricky and nuanced. For instance, a regular college player who goes directly to school in his D+1 year, the team that drafted him will generally have his rights until August 15 of the year his class graduates.

However, guys that do the "gap" year of USHL or Junior A after being drafted, they can state that they are done with college after three years and declare themselves free agents. There's some other nuance to this that changed in the last CBA, and whether you become a free agent on June 1 or August 15 is also dictated by a bunch of convoluted language.

Or, "gap" guys can stay enrolled for four years, and the team that drafted them will retain their rights until August 15 of the year their class graduates, essentially five years after being drafted.

There are some other scenarios I'm leaving out like being a regular D+1 enrollee but declaring you're done before January 1 of your senior year, what "graduating class" means and how it can change, etc. But the answer for Kjellberg is almost certainly that we will retain his rights until August 15 after his class graduates.

If we define WPG's PP1 as "whenever Mark Scheifele is on the ice" we can compare how well the unit performed with Trouba vs Byfuglien.

With Byfuglien: 116.63 CF/60, 8.01 xGF/60, 10.16 GF/60
With Trouba: 99.89 CF/60, 7.85 xGF/60, 7.06 GF/60

WPG's powerplay was significantly better with Byfuglien as the QB.

Now I agree that Trouba is far from a terrible option on the PP, he can definitely be part of an effective unit, but when we have two of the best PPQBs in the league in DeAngelo and Shattenkirk he shouldn't be playing over them just because he is our designated #1D. I hated when AV played McD over Yandle on the PP despite the latter being a far superior PPQB.

Not to argue against your point, but I definitely wouldn't say those numbers demonstrate that WPG's PP was significantly better with Byfuglien in place of Trouba.

It looks more like it was slightly better, and a lot luckier.

I'm a big believer in starting strength training very early in your life. Like when you are 12 or 13.

Recent extensive research in Sweden shows that kids benefit a lot from strength training even from when they are 7-8. Moreover, the kids that are behind benefit the most. They have up to 30% growth potential. Before it was believed that kids couldn’t really build muscles but that he been rebutted.

I have a client who is 13 and plays hockey and we started last year when he was 12. Put 50 lbs on and his coaches started noticing him more.

My ideal PP units would be this:

Panarin-Lias-Kakko
Kravtsov-DeAngelo

Zibanejad-Chytil-Buchnevich
Howden-Shattenkirk

For me it's the 1-3-1. Heavy focus on lefty righty passing options.

Kreider
Panarin-Zib-Kakko
Fox

Chytil
DeAngelo-Strome-Buch
Trouba

I do not expect Kreider to be on the team though. And I am not sure Chytil has the ability to screen on the PP. He would be better on the side
