My ideal PP units would be this:

Panarin-Lias-Kakko
Kravtsov-DeAngelo

Zibanejad-Chytil-Buchnevich
Howden-Shattenkirk

Why are we moving the player with the 16th most 5v4 goals last year and 6th most the last two years on to the 2nd unit to play 40 scrambly seconds at the end of each shift? We can just put Panarin back on the right wall where he played often (not last year) in Columbus.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have both Panarin and Zibanejad both in their spot on the PP? For me, the PP isn't the 5 best players. It should be a solid unit that works well

But most teams don't play both units 1 minute each. Teams range from like a 60/40 split to almost 90/10. Splitting them up on the PP would mitigate his effect instead of amplifying it because you'd just be having him replace one of the best PP goal scorers in the league. He'd be better served providing a second option on the other side of the ice so teams can't focus on Zibanejad and take that option away.

Yeah I think it might be more effective to kind of rotate them in and out of that left wing circle position (edit: I mean while both of them are on the same PP unit). Keeps things changing up and teams guessing a little bit. Power play setups are rarely completely static either unless you're the Caps. Even last year with Zibanejad being effective from the left wing, he had cold stretches and they moved him around (rightly or wrongly)

Where is Trouba? I'd easily put him instead of Howden on the point. Then take out Lias and put Howden there.

1. I am not a fan of a 3-2 PP.
2. Trouba isn't really a PP speciaist.
3. I don't think Howden is great at screening the goalie, Lias has done this at different levels already

He may not be a true PP QB but the guy just put up 50 points last season, when was the last time we had a a Ranger defenseman put up 50 points, Leetch? The guy will be on the first unit, that I am almost 100% of. I think you are underselling his offense.

I remember reading that Trouba was one of the Jets worst defenseman in terms of production on the power play last season. He seems to have excelled in 5v5 but was not as effective on the power play. DeAngelo and Shattenkirk could both take PP1 and in the future Fox could be that guy. Trouba will probably get the first stab at it but I could easily see someone else being more suited for the role.

I'm sure Trouba will get the first crack at PP1 based on optics, but I still want ADA on PP1 and Shatt/Fox on PP2. Save Trouba's minutes for EV and PK.

Which again I don't really buy or think much of since he had more PP points than any other defensemen (granted Dustin was injured half the season but i think we can all agree he is the best PP dman on that team so Trouba is behind him).

Again though, i'm not saying Trouba is a PP QB by definition, he's not. But he is still a very effective player on any PP unit.

He can become a scout and draft his future son. ;)

If we define WPG's PP1 as "whenever Mark Scheifele is on the ice" we can compare how well the unit performed with Trouba vs Byfuglien.

With Byfuglien: 116.63 CF/60, 8.01 xGF/60, 10.16 GF/60
With Trouba: 99.89 CF/60, 7.85 xGF/60, 7.06 GF/60

WPG's powerplay was significantly better with Byfuglien as the QB.

Now I agree that Trouba is far from a terrible option on the PP, he can definitely be part of an effective unit, but when we have two of the best PPQBs in the league in DeAngelo and Shattenkirk he shouldn't be playing over them just because he is our designated #1D. I hated when AV played McD over Yandle on the PP despite the latter being a far superior PPQB.
