Corey Pronman in the Athletic a few weeks ago had a story on all upcoming free agents, NCAA, junior and foreign. Of the four guys you mentioned here were his ratings.

Strauss Mann -- rated 3rd. In projected NHL player tier.

McKay -- rated 27. In Long Shot Tier

Pelton-Byce -- rated 21. In Long Shot tier

Kawaguchi -- rated 11. In Have a Chance to Play in NHL tier

Other NCAA free agents he rated:

Matt Kiersted - D - North Dakota: rated 2. In projected NHL tier.
Akiot Hirose - D - Minnesota State. rated 9. In Have a Chance to Play in the NHL Tier
Marc McLaughlin - C - Boston College. rated 10. In Have a Chance to Play in the NHL Tier
Parker Ford - C - Providence. rated 12. In Have a Chance to Play in the NHL Tier
Josh Dunne - C - Clarkson. rated 16. In Longshot Tier. Just signed with Columbus
Chayse Primeau - C - Nebraska-Omaha. rated 18. In Longshot Tier.
Brandon Scanlon - D - Nebraska-Omaha. rated 20. In Longshot Tier.
Make Hardman - RW - Boston College. rated 22. In Longshot Tier.
Ben Myers - C - Minnesota. rated 23. In Longshot Tier.
Adam Scheel - G - North Dakota. rated 25. In Longshot Tier.
Odeen Tufto - C - Quinnipiac. rated 26. In Longshot Tier.

He separately rated college draftees who could become free agents (s0me may opt to return to school). His top five were:

1. David Farrance - D - BU. Nashville draftee. In Projected Good NHL player tier.
2. Ronnie Attard - D - Western Michigan. Philadelphia draftee. In projected NHL tier.
3. Tyce Thompson - C - Providence. New Jersey draftee. In projected NHL tier.
4. Nick Abruzzese - C - Harvard. Toronto draftee. In projected NHL tier.
5. Collin Adams - LW - North Dakota. Islanders draftee. In projected NHL tier.

Depending on what we do with our goalies and what Wall and Huska show the rest of the season, I would love to try to get Strauss Mann from Michigan. Dryden McKay is another kid with great skill. Both of these guys are small, but I feel like we have a good track record with smaller goalies (and a worse track record with large goalies).

Ty Pelton-Byce has an interesting combo of decent size and good skill. Jordan Kawaguchi from NoDak is a forward I'd like to take a flyer on. Small but really good skill and instincts.

There are other guys who could become free agents. If he doesn't sign with Nashville, Farrance is a guy a lot of teams will want.

That's interesting that he did a big list with the overseas guys. I haven't seen guys do that before.

I don't like the McKay rank. I think he has him that low only because he's small. And he is small, but I don't think 5'11" means you can't play in the NHL as a goalie. And again, I think we've done well with goalies that are considered small.

The rest of it, I don't disagree with. Lots of guys who are mildly interesting but not a ton with real big upside.

And it's a 2 mph dribbler that needed brooms to make it over the line. Congrats Karl!

Mann, Farrance, Thompson and Abruzzese are all names I've heard from from NYR peeps.

Ford was a kid I wanted to take a shot on in the late rounds last year.
Not sure why Farrance would sign with us. Same goes for Mann. Abruzzese and Ford are definitely guys id try to get. If Farrance is interested in joining the battle in NY for playing time then its a no brainer pay the kid.

He's had a rough season, battling COVID, then an injury, missing the WJC. I'll chalk this up as a lost year but he's only 20.

I could see the Rangers going after Thompson. They have probably seen a lot of him.

Well the interest is strictly from the Rangers standpoint, I don't have insight into what is mutual.

But I'd also keep an eye on how the Rangers potentially look to backfill positions if certain other prospects are moved in deals.

Sorry if a dumb question but how are Farrance, Thompson, and Abbruzze free agents? Do they have to leave school and then are free agents? I see that Farrance is a senior so 8/15 for him? Again thanks

Farrance is, as you said, a graduating senior who can become UFA after 8/15. The other two were "double over-age" draftees IIRC so they can leave school and become free agents after this season (the season never happened for Abruzzese). No guarantee any of them are available.

Some serious implications being made here in the prospect thread...

I don’t rate him right now but he was always meant to be a long play.

I don’t think NYR thought even in their optimistic predictions that he would be in North America before age 23

Easier to see next year. This year in NA he'd be in the Juniors. He did real well in the Swedish Juniors last year. They are worse than Canadian Juniors, but he was only 18. Let's see how well he does next season in the SHL. This is a very strange year for him and for the world, so it's hard to judge him until next season. Good on him for his first goal against adults.

Liiga isn't what it once was. There was a time not that long ago where I'd put it right up there against the SHL, but now it's clearly a rung below.

For sure but to be fair, I've seen NHL teams play that level of defense too

That shot will play in any league though. I have some hope that he can be an Olofsson esque player for us.
