Confirmed with Link: Rangers Acquire Rights to RW Barclay Goodrow; Signs Contract (6 Years, $3.642M AAV)

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
I'm fully prepared to overpay for Goodrow, but if it's for 5 years I wouldn't want to do more than a little over $3M. I could live with a bit more on the AAV if the term was 3-4 years. I mean there's different degrees of overpayment; 5 years/$22.5M is a significant overpayment which concerns me when we still have cap uncertainty and will have several guys needing new deals in that time.

Off 2 Cups. GMs will associate the "this is a guy you win with" tag with him and pay for it. But where is the $4.5M from? That's more than the $3-3.5M I've seen people throwing around.
I know we all think GMs are dumb, and some certainly are, but I can’t imagine more than a handful of them actually thinking this way.

We’re getting a good look under the hood on Drury here right away, which I appreciate. I am all about this pre-emptive move for Goodrow, and think he’s exactly what this team needs, but I’ll be right there with a pitchfork if he is signed long term for $4.5M. That’s an insane number.

There are others who can do what Goodrow can do available for certainly less than 4.5M per... I'd do that for Coleman for instance.

Teams around the league are in a trading frenzy for cap space and people think guys are going to get a 400+ % raise? That would be incredibly crazy.

Longer term but lower aav makes sense to me. If the wheels fall towards the end he can be flipped to Arizona with a pick, or bought out.

Bringing Goodrow is exactly the move that was speculated / assumed to be what Drury has been charged as the priority order of business. But anyone could throw a crazy contract so I want to see details. Is it realistic to not go over 5 years and $3.little AAV? Front load with bonus and maybe it is movable in the last year or two.

P.S. Moving Buchnevich was “cemented” by resigning Kreider after Kakko and Kravtsov were drafted. This move has nothing to do with the prospects for the Russian.

Do I think Carp is horrible? no.. but the guy literally talked about the coaching search THE DAY Gallant was hired and had nothing
Did anyone, though? I mean there was obviously heavy speculation, but up until the announcement was made I don't remember anyone saying anything was imminent. There was still speculation the day Gallant was hired about what Brind'Amour would do and Tocchet still seemed a real possibility. I'm talking not just Carp, but also Brooks, Vince, and the national guys. Drury played it as close to the vest as possible. We still likely don't even know the full extent of who the Rangers spoke with.

Carpiniello addressed that in a mail bag--guys come and go, it takes time to cultivate relationships that become sources. He said he was with Drury hours before the Gallant news came out and got nothing. Just like everyone else.

Goodrow was a must for me this off-season. He’s going to be overpaid so be prepared but nevertheless a must.

the versatility, face off guy, last minute on the ice protecting leads, wing center pk aggressive on the forecheck, big and strong. This isn’t Jesper fast.

Shot blocking too. He really is a very solid bottom 6 guy defensively.

Im prepared to overpay - just hoping we are impressed with Drurys first shot at negotiating an incoming UFA contract and it’s a fair deal for both sides

If the Rangers sign him anywhere near 4.5M/Per then the "Fire Drury" movement will begin.

3.1 X 5 is probably the max of where it should be and that just serves further notice how bad the Jesper Fast situation was handled. That guy, turns out, is pretty hard to replace and everyone seemed to know that except the GM.

Regarding Buch… it is simple mathematics.

I’d love to keep the guy but I’d rather put what his new hit would be into a center.

Money better spent and you should be able to get back good value for him.

Doesn’t have anything to do with Goodrow but if you want to say this was the nail for him so be it. It was going to happen anyway.

Yanni Gourde is two years into a six year deal for $5.166 mil. Four years to go and I get the vibe that people wouldn’t have a problem with that. He’s a real good player. So is Goodrow. If we’re signing him he’s going to get paid. Gourde is a real pain in the ass to play against but he’s not the physical force that Goodrow is. I think we can figure on $3.5 anyway—maybe higher and at least 5 years for Goodrow.

5x 3.25 would be exciting but you may need to go 6 to get the hit down to that

Riiiight. A guy who has been covering the Rangers for 42 years ('79) and has published two books about hockey has worse sources than bloggers. Hoooookay. Reality check, buddy. I mean, dislike him all you want but the above is just complete horse shit.
Carp has some sources but is not always right
The $4.5 number feels like he’s guessing to me

Who is always right?
Not many!
Just saying that we shouldn’t take his words as ironclad either

at any rate while I feel like rangers coverage is a
Bit lacking it’s funny we hate the guys with connections because they’re “old school” and hate the guys with modern takes and writing because they “don’t have connections”

Also anyways, Goodrow move is interesting but also feels a bit like overpaying for a role player you SHOULD be able to develop, but it’s not always easy to find and develop a bottom six physical guy who’s good defensively
Despite the rep of bottom sixers and unskilled and dime a dozen, it can be a bit of a specialist role sometimes and you pay a bit more for specialists
