Also - with all of this talk about the Rangers needing to be “tougher”:

I’d rather overpay (within reason) for a guy like Goodrow who has won Cups and knows how to win with tenacity, hustle and within a structure than a dumb goon who is a waste of a roster spot and serves little other purpose. (See several past Slat signings).

Goodrow is what the doctored ordered. A mature player, not a kid, who can stand up against the mature teams like the Bruins, Caps, Isles etc. He is also clearly a defense first player as his offensive game is not much.

This is also the first move of several as the congestion on both RW and at C is now considerable. If there are no trades the depth is Buch, Kakko, Goodrow, Kravtsov. At C Zib, Strome, Goodrow, Chytil. Either doesn't really work so more trades are coming. Let's hope they are smart trades and not boring ones like a Slats Special for Eichel.

Love this deal from Drury. I’m expecting 5 years at something at or slightly below $3m and his versatility and experience along with his style of play will be invaluable with a young roster. It will give Gallant lots of options and if all goes right, 1/3 of a hard nosed 3rd line.

What people need to understand is that signing Goodrow doesn’t mean Buch has to go. Drafting Kaako and Kravtsov at 2 and 9 within the last 4 years makes that an almost assured outcome. The team needed to find a Swiss-army knife to help fill whatever hole is needed.

Regardless if the Rangers sign Goodrow or not, can Seattle technically select him in the expansion draft? Or is he a player the Rangers have to protect with one of their forward spots?

Depends on if the Rangers put him on their protected list. If they’re hard at work trying to sign him already as is being reported my guess is they have protected him.

Is this the first time the Rangers have traded away a pending UFA’s rights? I can remember them trading them away lots of times. Richter, Leetch, Messier, Yandle, feel like I’m missing one. But never trading for one.

Really? It’s not rocket science

because you already have kakko kravtsov lafreniere and 18 mil in kreider and Panarin

now you’re going to pay another winger ufa money.
Not hard to read the writing on the wall
I think Buch was a goner either way. He is a casualty of Kakko/Kravtsov/Lafrenier, not Goodrow.

Carp is insane.

Carp says 4.5m for 5 years minimum. Can We put him on the banned list yet?

he was as I’ve said for the past year. this just further cements it

No, it really doesn't. Buch was a goner independent of potentially signing Goodrow. Buch doesn't do what Goodrow does. The Rangers however, are hopeful that Kakko, Laf and Kravtsov can do what Buch does and do it better. Also, Buch will fetch a nice return. That is why he is a goner.

You know, I've come to an epiphany: while we have the largest American fanbase in the NHL and while we're the most valuable franchise in the entire NHL, we have without a shadow of the doubt the worst bloggers and worst beat writers (not to mention a really crappy owner). I don't know how and I don't know why, but the media coverage of the Rangers, both published and freelance, is absolutely abysmal. On the professional side, you have shit-stirrer Larry Brooks, a schmuck in Carpy and apathetic non-insiders like Vince Merc and Colin Stephenson, and on the blogging side you have attention-whores who will report bullshit stuff for attention like David Shapiro, Greg Kaplan, Adam Herman, Joe Fortunato and the Forever Blueshirts guy.

Seriously, we can't do better? The NEW YORK RANGERS. America's Hockey Team. The only team in New York City. We can't do better than these hacks?
