Does Goodrow have to be protected? Wouldn't Seattle be taking a risk drafting him and having him walk? We could still protect Gauthier, Rooney or Blackwell instead.

Worst case they draft him and we finalize the contract we were working during our window. Similar to Richter to Nashville in 1998?
If you don't protect him, Seattle can negotiate with him starting tomorrow and they could make a deal with him or sign him and trade him for a protected player. Too risky. He's the guy you want.

Basically the idea that they are building the “next Tampa” + NYC.

If he was interested in NYC, it's not like he would have not seen their offer on ufa day.

My guess, this is more about what exactly would it take if he is interested, so other plans can be made around that rather than waiting to find out on ufa day.

As long as Goodrow doesn’t end up on the line with Panarin and Strome I’m happy

I really like the idea here. He brings size, smarts, grit and two Stanley Cup rings. All things we can use if we’re going to become a team that’s harder to play against. He’s probably going to cost though and I think that Drury is going to go to some lengths to sign him. We’ll have to see what that comes to but again I like the idea.

Having a guy with two recent Stanley Cup rings in the locker room—that’s a good guy to have around kids like Lafreniere, Kakko and Chytil.

Also gives Gallant a third line he can trust in big spots.

Kreider will likely be on the other wing and has a huge amount of playoff experience albeit without the Cups that Goodrow comes in with. I could see Gallant really getting a line like that humming

That line can help insulate the Kakkos and Laffys up top and they’ll be a pain to deal with.

Watching a lot of TB games Goodrow did a ton of all the little things defensively you need to win games on a nightly basis. And he shows up when it counts. He would help solidify the bottom six nicely, but at what cost?

It may mean other moves but also once the Rangers buy out DeAngelo’s contract we’ll have about $28 mil to work with.

Also - with all of this talk about the Rangers needing to be “tougher”:

I’d rather overpay (within reason) for a guy like Goodrow who has won Cups and knows how to win with tenacity, hustle and within a structure than a dumb goon who is a waste of a roster spot and serves little other purpose. (See several past Slat signings).

5 years x 2.75 mil. More years for less AAV. A boy can dream.

EDIT: 6 years at 3 per isnt that bad either. He will be 34. Not the worse contract I have seen.

Gorton made some bad trades and GM decisions, for sure.

Fast, DeAngelo over Lundqvist, Lias Andersson and Kravtsov circuses, the list goes on.

So I'm ready to see what Drury can offer us. Like I said at the time, I just wish Davidson hadn't been at the red wedding that night.

If Drury can get Goodrow under contract on a very friendly deal someone will have to change the head on the magician image.

Have a feeling that may not happen though… I think Drury knows what he wants and is willing to overpay. Probably on term
