Those players don't exist for peanuts. Especially if they just proved they could play on one of the best playoff lines in hockey. We overpaid a bit but let's give this guy a chance to see how he fits on a very talented lineup.

they also had Johnson making 5 mill who passed through waivers with no interest and Gourde who they desperately tried to trade prior to this year.

Well, since he's basically agreed to this deal with us as a pending UFA, if Seattle takes him, they will have to beat that contract (and have him actually want to sign there). Not sure they will want to do that, and not sure he'll actually want to put his name to any similar contract Seattle would put in front of him.

He's paced for over 30 points the last two years and that's all at even strength.

Aav is fine, the length is just a lil worrisome. Hopefully the new Tv deals have a similar effect like they did in the NBA and greatly increase the capspace of teams
With all the teams looking to move salary one would think it would be more cost effective to acquire another player who has similar skills and not have a 6 yr deal. We all know the names because we have been talking about them for months. Shoot Danault would be better and probably only a little more expensive.

Gourde is very clearly a better player. Goodrow is the "worst" guy from that line. Johnson stinks, I agree, but in a vacuum most teams aren't also 18 mill over the cap.

Gourde is legitimately worth his contract though. They had Coleman on a way below market value deal, Cernak a top-4 D undervalued, Hedman and McDonagh making less than Trouba. Rangers really can't afford to overpay at the bottom end of the roster.

I think looking at both Trouba and Kreider as overpay deals is pure hindsight. Both of these players would have gotten the same deals, if not more, with other teams. I don't think the issue is necessarily the amounts they make but the amounts they make relative to where they are on our depth chart now. In hindsight, is having Trouba at $8 million a great idea? Probably not, but I'd say literally no one had Fox winning the Norris in year 2.

This team has a ton of money tied up on the wing. Putting Goodrow aside, Buch or Kravtsov were already likely to be dealt considering you have Panarin and Kreider locked up long term, and Laf and KK who will need to get paid soon. Being that Buch has a higher value than Krav at the moment (and will cost more now) it makes sense they would be looking to deal him from a position of strength. While I don't want to see him traded as he has really elevated his game, I see the writing on the wall. Hopefully the return for him is decent.

I do find it amusing that we're doing the "this has Sather's fingerprints all over it" thing again. When he was in charge, everything good was because Gorton did it. Everything bad, Sather did it. Now we're back to it. Either Sather was involved, or Drury is emulating him, or something. Too much.

But the cap hasn't and this isn't typical times. Guys like Goodrow are guys you should have A)Drafted yourself or B)Picked them up from another team before they got to their retirement contract. They can be found. Tampa did it right?

Good players are going to teams. They aren't gonna sit out in the cold waiting for a deal like Oliver Twist. The NHL is very artificially competitive and teams need all the talent they can get.
