Gonna sound like a broken record here, but you guys need to stop going by like, 2013's cap.

Salaries have skyrocketed.

I expect Goodrow to play the exact same role that Fast/Blackwell played on Panarin's line and that he'll be around 15g 40pt spark plug. Playing with Panarin, he could be more. So far he paces for 30 points a year, purely at 5v5 and with 15 minutes a night on a shutdown line. Playing with Panarin 16+ minutes a night is a different story. Panarin is one of the best even strength point producers in the world and loves to have a guy like Fast/Goodrow on his off wing. If Goodrow's even a 40 point guy who takes the important draws and PKs, 3.6M won't be the end of the world. If he plays 12 minutes a night on the 4th line, it's a dumb signing.

Of course its an overpayment - its a UFA signing. This is a core move. He will be a leader on the ice by example and in the room and for once in the last decade and a half they have upgraded their putrid faceoff percentage, even if he doesnt take all the draws.

Yes 6 years is long but it brings the hit down to a more reasonable amount with all of the future signings that will need to happen. Probably the only way to fit him in when you forecast the next several years.

Also, if this team is serious about being a cup contender you might as well get a guy like this on the roster now when you can instead of trying to trade for one at a deadline. It also gives Gallant a greater chance at rolling 4 lines.

And I dont think this is really a Sather-like move at all. He brought a lot of washed up vets, needless reclamation projects and one dimensional goons on overpriced contracts. Goodrow is not any of those and he comes in with 2 Cups.

I am fine with this deal. Its a smidge higher than I thought it would be at 6 years but you gotta give to get what you want. The right character guys at this level are hard to find.

I could see them using Goodrow two ways

1 would be using him as a straight up center (3C) and moving Chytil up while getting rid of Strome

or having him play on Chytil’s wing (either on line 2 or 3) and having Goodrow take draws as needed

Maybe overpaid by a little. But he is 28 and this takes him to 34. Not the end of the world. A winner with playoff experience. Better than overpaying more players that have never even been to the dance.

Knowing us, we'll probably buy out the last year or 2 so it till take him to 32 or 33

But the cap hasn't and this isn't typical times. Guys like Goodrow are guys you should have A)Drafted yourself or B)Picked them up from another team before they got to their retirement contract. They can be found. Tampa did it right?

If the Rangers traded a first round pick for a Goodrow type player like TB did, the meltdown here would be even worse than the one we're seeing with this contract (which is perfectly fair value btw)

Tampa has been proving for years you can get out of a cap crunch pretty easily if you build the team right

it’s not going to be an issue

Yes, when someone gets into their late twenties and wants a new contract that will take them into their mid thirties they let them walk if the dollars don’t work.

First reaction is yikes. I hope that Goodrow is a great player for the Rangers and that someone bookmarks this post and makes me eat crow in a few years

Tampa would have paid Goodrow if they had the space let’s not kid ourselves

Can we stop acting like this is some magical lock on the teams cap space.

Every year we say “how is team X going to get out of this cap jam?” and they always find a way. Teams like Arizona and Ottawa exist literally to dump salary to lol

Two years too long and close to a million more than hes worth.

This is NOT going age well.

I'm assuming he's got trade protections as well?

SMH

With all the teams looking to move salary one would think it would be more cost effective to acquire another player who has similar skills and not have a 6 yr deal. We all know the names because we have been talking about them for months. Shoot Danault would be better and probably only a little more expensive.

Except it sounds like Danault is going to be a lot more expensive, not a little. He's probably asking for $5m+ or $6m+.

Yeah, I don't hate it at all. I think it's long and the average is higher than we'd like, but what are we really complaining about? 750k? 1 year? It's not like we overpaid a 5M winger with a 7x8M deal. Drury identified the team's weaknesses, saw a player that addressed them, and paid to bridge the gap. There are far worse moves than this.

As somebody else said earlier I could very easily see him getting minutes with Panarin. He's always seemed to want the Fast / Blackwell type and Goodrow may work there. If you're able to balance that line out and use Mika / Laf / Kakko / Kreider / Krav to build another 2 good lines - that seems like a big win, contract be damed.

Goodrow is the right type of player for this team, but man that’s a lot of money. Hopefully they front load it so they can trade him towards the end if need be.

That being said, once again, he’s the type of player they need. We all know that reshaping the Bottom 6 is important.

If the Rangers traded a late first for him? I'm not talking about trading 1st or 2nd overall or any picks. I'm talking about trading while a contender.

Can they do something like this:

5M
4.35M
4M
3M
2.75M
2.5M

The assumption that our position is comparable to the Lightning when they were winning the President’s Trophy is kind of nuts? No, we’re like the Canucks, when they had an exciting young core and they signed Roussel and whoever else for the bottom six to kind of vaguely “play the right way” in people’s general direction
