Just seems like every long-term contract we sign has a high likelihood of burning us in the end.

Are in the case of Trouba and Kreider we regret it pretty much immediately.

As much as I love Zib, I fear the same thing there

Am I the only one who is fine with this contract? 3.6 mil for a 3rd liner who can play all over the lineup is very good. And who cares about the 6 years? You honestly believe he’s going to play out his entire contract? Come on this is the NHL.
Nothing really hurts you but clauses. As long as you can move the player, there's always a bad team willing to pick up a contract for a price.

And if worst comes to worst, Kreider just comes down with Malaysian Butt Covid or whatever the f*** and gets a miracle cure in time for the playoffs.

This is absolutely a player we need.

I expect Goodrow to play the exact same role that Fast/Blackwell played on Panarin's line and that he'll be around 15g 40pt spark plug. Playing with Panarin, he could be more. So far he paces for 30 points a year, purely at 5v5 and with 15 minutes a night on a shutdown line. Playing with Panarin 16+ minutes a night is a different story. Panarin is one of the best even strength point producers in the world and loves to have a guy like Fast/Goodrow on his off wing. If Goodrow's even a 40 point guy who takes the important draws and PKs, 3.6M won't be the end of the world. If he plays 12 minutes a night on the 4th line, it's a dumb signing.
I have a feeling that that by October/November of the 22-23 season Barron and Cuyle will be doing some of heavy lifting as well to finally give us that grind line . So...one can look at it this way....Goodrow might be an excellent tutor for these two guys . I think Barron will have a great season this year under Gallant . I think he is the perfect coach to break Barron in and the results will be good for all .

There's some smoke around trading Strome. Drury has specifically mentioned that he thinks Goodrow can play center. I think that's where he ends up.

And if EVENTUALLY all of the other kids have forced their way into permanent top nine spots and the only place for Goodrow to play is on the 4th line, a 4th line with those two on ELC/cheap deals and a veteran Goodrow will be a damn good 4th line.

My thoughts:

1. Risky? Yes, of course.

2. I’ve all spring bitched about how we shouldn’t get the guys that got the most exposure, there are other guys with the same capabilities.

3. What the heck, the guy got great attitude. We need more grit, everyone must be able to see that.

It’s a hard league to get moves done in. Drury did something. It won’t cripple the organization if it doesn’t pan out. I am not an expert on Goodrow, but hopefully he can at least contribute in some capacity even if he doesn’t pan out like we hope.

4. Now let’s get Gourde.

I mean, if it was $3M even, I'd be totally cool with it. So does the $600K make me hate it? No. That difference won't preclude us from bringing in other pieces needed to win--and if it does, we're doing something wrong, anyway. What does it do? Prevent us from signing another Jack Johnson each year for the next six years? Cool.
Way too much. We are gonna hate this contract and for 6 years? I would take a big pass. This is gonna backfire on us

Yup....that works likely a lot better after this season for sure . It won't all happen overnight as some expect ....it's not plug and play .

We literally had Mika average a PPG on a bargain contract the last 2 years.

Yeah, but he was cheap when it didn’t matter and his contract is up at the absolute worst time for us. Would have been MUCH better to pay a little more AAV and have it run 2 more years.

Gorton really was the worst GM when it came to contract management lol.

Turk is attending a local golf event this weekend at our local golf course about 7 minutes from my home . It's a 3 day event with many ex players and such from around Atlantic Canada . They have had Crosby and Richards there before . They also have a lot of retired guys around . These guys all like to sit ....golf and tell stories about the old days....it is quite a fraternity . I hope to be able to meet him and I would like to drop a question or two on him....like picking a captain...I'm referring Lindgren our ultimate warrior and I would also like to ask about Goodrow his thoughts and also the Eichel debate ....he likely would back off on that one . We shall see....

The current market. There were reports AAV could be north of 4 mil fwiw. There is no doubt in my mind if he opted FA he would have gotten more than what we paid.
By what team?

If the alleged deal is true, he got the AAV of a short term deal... but with 6 years. It doesn't matter what 'reports' were. His agent deserves a medal.

We outbid ourselves. Why was Fast only worth $2M?

Welcome to the UFA market.

We complain we don't have a certain type of player, we get that player, but we overpay on a contract (didn't have to trade any assets mind you). That's how it works folks. I know most of you have been around the game long enough so I'm not sure why some are so up in arms.

The price is fine, probably should be a 2.5-3.0 player but again, UFA market. 1-2 years too long, oh well, 3.6M isn't going to break the bank and if we want to buy out the last year then we do that.
