Tampa traded a first for Goodrow.

When can we kill this tall tale that they found him for nothing and developed into the player he is?
Never said that, but what I did say is that "Get them before they are at retirement contract," which is what Tampa did. I have no problem trading a first for a guy like him if it makes sense. We've had plenty of those lately.

$3.6m is a retirement contract?

I think looking at both Trouba and Kreider as overpay deals is pure hindsight. Both of these players would have gotten the same deals, if not more, with other teams. I don't think the issue is necessarily the amounts they make but the amounts they make relative to where they are on our depth chart now. In hindsight, is having Trouba at $8 million a great idea? Probably not, but I'd say literally no one had Fox winning the Norris in year 2.
Trouba probably. It was a good deal at the time and nobody anticipated Fox waltzing onto the ice a norris winner.

Kreider was a bad deal from day 1. He was already declining and he just had probably his worst season as a pro.

And hindsight or not, Trouba has underperformed regardless of Fox's status as an elite D. Kreider got a contract smack in the middle of underperforming and has only continued that decline.

"I want gritty players but also they have to score and also their AAV has to be <$3m"

-every Rangers fan
Those players usually come from the prospect pool; NYs problem is they never drafted that type of player in any meaningful round, and instead drafted enough skilled defenseman to drown a yacht with

Please everyone, if you want to bitch about the price that’s one thing. But please stop talking about a cap crunch where we won’t be able to pay kakko or laf. That is a laughably ridiculous statement

They will be able to pay them, yet it will probably take them also attaching good assets to bad contracts like this one, if not buying them out should there be any large savings in doing so, to make the cap room.

Should that happen without any Cups, well we've been there before.

Thinking Trouba could have got more than what he did is scary when in 3 years he may be our 3rd best RHD. That worries me a ton ton more than this contract.

Brendan Lemieux, Lias Andersson, Brett Howden and Julien Gauthier are four big whiffs for foundational bottom six pieces, one with a very high draft pick. They don’t trust themselves to find guys who can play in the league

81.5/23 = 3.54

I get that impressions of contract values are totally skewed by the hard-cap and the consequences of the flat-cap, but I really don’t see how a 3.6 AAV for a player with needed qualities is bad at all. It’s 4.4% of the franchise’s allotment. The last thing this team needs is more offense, so I don’t understand the concerns about a lack of offensive production.

Unsurprisingly the Rangers blogosphere is whining about this even more than the folks here
Twitter is insufferable right now about this. Drury is the worst GM ever, this contract will sink the Rangers' rebuild and we're going to lose one of our young stars as as a result. That's basically every take.

Oh and "Need Gorton back." Which is fair, I mean he didn't sign any contracts that the fanbase dislikes, so it makes sense.

most gritty players are bad at hockey or are prohibitively expensive. this is not an issue exclusive to the rangers.

Nothing like showing playoff commitment to your fans by signing a 28 year old grinder to a 6 year deal then smoke-screening the future of Strome and Buch. This smells like Dolan screaming "get a tough player at any cost" after the Wilson game.

You guys drafted Lemieux? For some reason I thought he was acquired

Anderson was drafted as a skill player and doesnt apply. For example, though a bad pick in the 2nd(more a 3 or 4 pick), Devils drafted Nathan Bastian; thats the type of player Im talking about

Id have to check the lists but im sure NY has taken a stab in the third or fourth round in the last few years on a bigger hitting forward, no?

Maybe overpaid by a little. But he is 28 and this takes him to 34. Not the end of the world. A winner with playoff experience. Better than overpaying more players that have never even been to the dance.

And compound this with the fact that they’re complaining about Buchnevich probably being traded, yeah things are bad rn lol

okay but these overpays are adding up now.

Trouba is overpaid and lost his top pair spot not even a year into his deal.

Kreider was overpaid the minute the ink dried and he's been dog shit since then

Goodrow is a straight up overpayment but, details pending, isn't the crime these other two are

When does it stop though?

Trouba and/or Kreider are eventually going to have to go, it's that simple.

Absolutely nobody asked you!
I mean its not all bad, no team in the league has as much youth coming up on the backend as NYr

it just means you then spend on a deal like this cause you dont often draft any Coleman/Bastian types, tho Lemieux and Fast were decent options

One of the rare times Twitter is right.
