DQ jamming him in every night really f***ed this kids development. Ironic, a coach “known” for development ruined this kid no doubt.

Only people who didn't follow college hockey would label Quinn as a "development coach". He was given the best recruits year after year. Not much developing there.

But now we got rid of Quinn and Howden. We can finally start to heal.

Only 23 1st round talent . Hes had some good glimpses early in his career plus good size . Why not. Good trade for knights

Can you give it a rest with rangers threads? You are biased and have no clue.

Why not? Because he sucks. That is why not. He is one of the worst players in the league by the eye test and by metrics. He doesn't have the talent needed to play at this level.

LOL glimpses. Ok bud.

Brett was misused here. Brought up too early. Gorton and Quinn are to blame. Hopefully he gets an opportunity with the Knights franchise to reach his potential.

he had like a 12 game stretch at the beginning of one season (rookie) where he was looking very promising but never refound that form. the moment his play dropped off, he should have been kicked down to Hartford but that never happened and he wallowed in 4th line mediocrity and eventual stats-hell. Yeah, the past two season he has not been anything to write home about. He's 23 and is pretty big but there is no way he was gonna "figure it out" in NY. If he succeeds in Vegas, it will probably be because they send him to Henderson (AHL) to get his act together and get some actual TOI

That’s right. And one could say that once Quinn started preaching ‘keep it simple’ Howden’s game became totally ineffective.
Personally I think he’s a poor offensive player but it could, theoretically, have been the coaching. Just a thought.

The best thing I can say about Brett Howden is that he seemed like a good guy and a good locker-room presence.

What an awful, awful hockey player.

this says it perfectly. seemed like a great kid and was clearly well liked and had everyone pulling for him. but jesus it was tough watching him try to play nhl hockey.

hockeys version of rudy should be made about his empty net goal

Clearly the power forward game you cited hasn’t worked at the NHL level.

This is too old (and we are too old too I recon) to go through, but that is not quit what I said, only that that was what he had potential to become and that he didn’t have what it took to be a center. ;)

It’s when I am attacked for posting something like this I get frustrated. In short I didn’t buy Howden’s potential as a top 6 center and suggested that we molded him into a energy winger:

I mean, I still think this. There is where his potential lies, I didn’t see the potential at center.

Admittedly, the term PF can be ambiguous. But if anything, these are posts really questioning his potential as a top 6 center and that was what made these posts controversial. Here we got a top 6 center who had 60-80 pts potential and Ola comes along and claims that he only should be used as an energy winger…

All from my POV. It’s easy to misunderstand each other.

He just couldn't stay on his skates... at the NHL level, that can't be "a thing"

Hope he does well in a new environment... I'm not going to say his dev was ruined necessarily but I think mistakes were made along the way.

either way... good luck Howden

In full disclosure the joke started when you referred to Brett Howden as a power forward in the WHL, and tripled down on it, not a few years later when the topic of him needing to be a power forward to stick in the NHL came up.

that one game on a Saturday afternoon in Nashville both he and Hajek looked like stars in the making

Edge, the post I quoted is from May 2018, NOT a few years later lol. A few months after we traded for him. This is the tough part with the archives at this place…

Actually, I think my comments — which you quoted — on him was pretty spot on, don’t you? And like even if they were a bit off, were they really deserving of all the personal attacks?

I think Quinn figured getting breakfast with him every morning was more beneficial than playing in the AHL.

Again, with respect to Howden and TOI--he was still averaging over 12:30 per game last season. This wasn't one of those scenarios where a kid was wasting away fighting for a handful of minutes each night. He averaged 13:40 in his three seasons.

We could look at his competition that year…..an 18 year old and very green Filip Chytil……Lias who still hasn’t figured shit out…….Boo Nieves. The only other prospect in Hartford that year with any potential was Vinni Lettieri. The Ranger pre-letter had run their development system pretty much into the ground. If Howden had stayed with Tampa he most definitely would have spent a couple years in Syracuse. Tampa isn’t in the habit of depleting their development system.
