i can see howden becoming a legit bottom line player who’s real solid in about 4 seasons. no big loss. he can have his growing pains somewhere else.

Howden should’ve had his growing pains in Hartford. Had that happened, I think we all sing a different tune towards him.

DQ jamming him in every night really f***ed this kids development. Ironic, a coach “known” for development ruined this kid no doubt.

Also just really poor talent evaluation from core personnel in the organization. Howden shouldn’t have been played at center, he don’t have the skill or hockey sense to excel there. It should have been made clear to him from the get go that his future was as an energy winger who would be defensively responsible and throw some weight around.

Or @Edge, what do you say? Still think he has the talent to be a top 6 center? ;)

We're pretty thin at Center - not sure why we're basically giving away a 22 year old that still might improve. The work ethic is there, for sure. I hope the guy figures it out - he seems to be a great teammate and very coachable.

Hopefully there are larger plans for down the middle.

He was given plenty of opportunity and minutes to show what he could do which was not much. Getting a 4th was good value for one of the worst players in the league.

Howden might even be stronger player already, if Quinn woulda let him have 40-120 all situation games in AHL.
And guys who can't stop kicking Howden, should try to just let it go ...

I really wanted Howden to succeed and he worked his tail off here but he really didn’t improve.

In fact, with plenty of consistent minutes he regressed and he was horrible on the dot, like most of the Rangers of the past decade and a half.

I was never a Howden killer but let’s be honest, his skating was subpar and he was maybe the weakest player on the puck. Easily knocked off. That’s not gonna fit into what Gallant requires

He occasionally made a nice pass and he worked his ass off on the Pk but in his role the Rangers needed more than what he was giving them and they can find someone else to surpass that pretty easily.

Again, the effort was never an issue, but his skills was that of an AHL player most of the season.

I wasn’t really eager to see if he had another level of development in him and to get anything in return is surprising let alone a 4th rounder plus any player.

Big win for Drury’s first deal. Good luck to Brett

Clearly the power forward game you cited hasn’t worked at the NHL level.

Not really arguing that there isn’t room for a lot of improvement - there is. I hate giving up on a 22 year old particularly at that position. Not a huge loss but the likelihood that a 4th will turn into something better is pretty low.

This is part of the consequences for having a ton of prospects. Gotta sometimes let them go for less. Though in this case I’m not even sure it’s less. Gotta make room for the next wave. Glad they are making this decision early.

Feel like I'm the only one genuinely wishing the kid well at this point...seemed to be a good guy, well liked teammate.

Him never playing a minute in the AHL is a baffling decision that is hard to justify.
I think almost everyone wishes him well. No?

The fourth round pick, Winnipeg's, would have been the Rangers as part of the Hayes trade if the Jets won the 2019 Cup. Rangers really wanted that pick.
