If the Wings were expected to chip in a pick, they probably don't make the move at all. And we would then either have to make do with some scrap heap ECHL goalie who would be awful, or have to send out an asset ourselves to rent one for a few months.
As I just posted, the shortage is 2 games this week (maybe one). After that Dansk is back and the Russian could be a backup. I know it's just monopoly money to the fans but it still seems like Verbeek went with the most expensive option and didn't get anything for it. So be it.

Dansk should be back in SD by the weekend. Gulls have games Wednesday and Friday. So Wednesday will be a problem and maybe Friday. After that they should be fine. Seems like an expensive fix for two games.

There are 22 games left for SD. So the organization is paying Husso about $1.5 million (perhaps a bit more) for 22 games of which he'll probably play a dozen. That's $125k per game he's likely to play for a minor league team! That seem exorbitant to me but your mileage may vary.
And what happens if one of them go down again? Suddenly Gulls have a average (at best) ECHL goaltender as the starter in the middle of a playoff push.

Organisation acquired Husso to ensure we have a quality 1-2 tandem in San Diego (at very least a good #1 if Gibson or Dostal) get injured. Gulls are trying to reach the playoffs for the first time since 21/22, assuming it's not your 1.5m being put up, there is no reason to be concerned about the money. We have plenty of cap room, and the young players in San Diego getting playoff experience would be much more valuable then 1.5m.

It's refreshing to see us actually making moves to improve the Gulls and try and get them over the line for some playoff hockey, then just sit and watch them sink.

That's fine. This trade was like a rorschach test...each person will see what they want to see.

But what I don't understand is why Verbeek gave Yzerman a freebie. Husso is making $4.75 million this year (cash basis) so Verbeek basically paid about $1.5 million for a minor league goalie. I'm sure Yzerman couldn't say yes fast enough.
What freebie? This assumes that Yzermam was actively looking to move Husso to free up cap space. It sounds like he was not. He certainly didn't have to. Detroit has plenty of cap space.

And so if the Ducks wanted Husso, they weren't going to get an asset out of Detroit because Detroit would have just said, "Nah."

Necessity dictates the transaction. Without necessity, then the Rorschach test would apply. We need the goalie depth due to injuries to Gibby and Clang. And I don't trust our organization when they say a player is only "day to day".

Goalies Under NHL Contract
  • NHL: G Dostal
  • AHL: G Dansk
  • ECHL: G Buteyets
  • ...
  • On IR: G Gibson (day to day), G Suchanek (out for the season), G Clang (out month to month) ⬅️
  • In Europe: G Clara (not available for NA play)
Injuries can happen. Clang is out "month to month". That negates any band-aid to the situation. Right now, Dansk is with the NHL club. What if either Dostal or Dansk get hurt while Gibby is out? (Knock on wood!) It is going ECHL goalie Buteyets in the NHL? That's crazy! The organization "requires" a goalie buffer and we got one with Husso. Remember, goalies have to be under a Ducks' contract to be able to be called up.

On a tangent, Buteyets is not ready for long term play at the AHL level. Adding Husso ensures Buteyets' development isn't ruined by pushing him into the AHL long term to close out the season.

Sometimes (most times?) filling a need is justification enough for a trade rather than doing everything we can to extort a trade partner.

Verbeek squeezing Yzerman is also about the last thing I would expect. It's good to have relationships, too.

And context is a huge factor. This wasn't Detroit calling around trying to unload salary. We clearly needed a #3 goalie, and likely saw this as favorable to having to give up any of the NHL club's assets to fill a temporary AHL need
