Great trade and great use of assets! This is proof that those who suggested the Rangers should just continue to be bad this year so they could stockpile assets were completely clueless.

The 1st round next year ends this phase.

Agreed.

I think there’s still the matter of Kreider, and a few other guys who are potential trade candidates.

You’re also looking at a scenario where this team could have two firsts. Whether they’re traded or used, it will be part of the talent accumulation phase.

Around that time (a little before/a little after) and we transition to the next phase. Some growth, some tweaking, dealing from positions of strength, maybe moving out a few expiring contracts, etc.

We’re getting there, and the end of this phase doesn’t necessarily have to mirror the beginning with a lottery or top 10 pick, but we still have a few more exists to go on the highway.

Lemieux is not a 2nd liner. He has a whopping career 18 points in 72 games. At this point he is a 4th liner.
I think he meant that Hayes, a second liner, returned a first and a good prospect. Not that Lemieux was a second liner; rather, he's the good prospect.

I'll say one thing...I definitely get the impression that it's not so much about the money as it is the right place for Trouba and his g/f. There's the whole "he'll only sign in Detroit!" stuff but it seems to be far more about where they think they can have the life and opportunities they want. Is Detroit better for her med career than NYC? Is a possible desire by Trouba to return to Michigan enough to trump possible better opportunities for his g/f?

I mean he said it this morning. On the call it sounded like a political response. He was cautious saying that he hasnt thought about the contract at all then said that quote.

Some of so those questions were so cringeworthy. Don't ask the guy "why do you think it didnt work out in Winnipeg"

Yeah.

I have to admit Gorton sounds a lot more intelligent when I'm not watching him talk. He doesn't want to give up much important information about contracts or future moves. And he doesn't really want to answer overly personal stuff or speculate.

Meanwhile, Neal Pionk comes to Winnipeg after a season in New York that started well but then fell off the rails.

As Shayna Goldman writes, Pionk started 2018-19 on a pair with Marc Staal and showed some skill but didn’t produce offence well enough to make up for his defensive shortcomings. As the season continued, Pionk’s defensive struggles combined with a drop-off in points and his minutes were progressively reduced. He continued to score on the power play — and remains a legitimate threat there, with an exceptional 7.6 points per 60 minutes of power play time — but couldn’t keep the puck out of his own zone at even a third-pairing level at even strength.

A December injury caused Pionk to miss time in January and led to conversations in New York about lost confidence. As the season went on and Pionk’s offence didn’t return — he scored 15 of his 26 points in October and November — Rangers GM Jeff Gorton began to speak openly about the need to reduce his minutes.

It’s tempting to look at those factors — an injury, a crisis of confidence and Pionk’s relative inexperience in the NHL — and use them to argue that Pionk’s ceiling is more impressive than his performance in New York. Certainly, that’s what Winnipeg’s pro scouts will be betting on by making Pionk such a key part of the Trouba trade return. The available data doesn’t support that optimism."

Thats kind of it in a nutshell.

I had on the XM hockey station in my car for a few minutes and I heard Dave Pagnotta & Scott Laughlin (I think) discussing the trade. They loved the return for the Jets. Hmm. They said Pionk could be a top 4 RHD. Unfortunately or fortunately I couldn't hear the bulk of the discussion.

I remember feeling excited about Pionk when he first came up. Last year was a total tire fire. It was like he was out there for every goal against. I wanted him to do well, but what a rough season.

Chances that they saw Pionk outside of the goal against Montreal? 0.

Just an observation, deals like this rarely are impacted by how ‘cheap’ you got the player in question. I remember being against guys like Smith, Shatty and Richards, but then when they signed it was much cheaper than expected or a shorter deal (Smith) and everyone against those moves felt like well its hard to complain now.

Trouba has to come here and grow and play really well. The kid is still young. Hopefully he can take another step forward or at least not take a step back.

Pionk was one of the worst players in the entire league last year. I don’t know how anyone that’s actually seen him play outside of a few highlights would ever think otherwise. Those XM guys embarrassed themselves with those comments.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm, but if it is not, I think this trade is just proof that smart moves aren't narrowly confined to either "be bad and pick high" or "going fo it".
The Rangers sold off aging players for draft picks and are now flipping said picks for players who make sense for their window.

They will probably flip more players that hurt next year's team on paper at the draft for picks in hope that they make them better in the future. On the same hand, they may also sign a free agent like Panarin because he is an elite player who only costs money and not draft futures.

I don't think acquiring Trouba is a sign that the rebuild is over, especially considering John Davidson has been preaching patience as early as three weeks ago. I think it's really just confirmation of what Gorton has said since they sent out the letter, that they are going to stockpile assets in order to acquire players that can help them win in the future.

I think this coming season is important for NYR management, as it will allow them to assess what they have going forward in a more clear sense. Do Howden, Andersson and Chytil improve? Does Buchnevich find consistency with his effort? Does Strome turn back into a pumpkin? Can Skjei find anothe level and hang with Trouba? Are Kakko and Kravtsov able to immediately step into the top 6? All these questions are unknown to the front office, and I'd be willing to bet they want to see how next season plays out before placing their resources in pushing for the playoffs just yet.
