Juding players solely on point totals is a phenomenally stupid thing to do.
Who said my judgment was solely based on his point total?

He’s a 26 year old versatile forward who not only produced here offensively, but played a fine two-way game.

You don’t buy a player like him out unless you have no choice.

Clearly, the professionals running this organization didn’t do something that ****ing stupid. I trust them a hell lot more than you.

Is 26 supposed to be be showing he’s young or something and has room to break out? He’s been in the league for seven years. We know what he is. He’s a bad offensive and defensive player who is poor on special teams and bad on face offs. He also presumably has no value around the league given that he was traded last year for Ryan Spooner and that he wasn’t traded this year while in a cap crunch.

Howden is prone to the same thing.

He's on 11 all the time and I need him on 8.5. He'd be better defensively if he didn't sprint at the puck as much as he does.

I think we saw a bit of this out of all of the rookies last year. DQ praised Howden early on for disrupting opponents and making plays at high speed, so he spent the rest of the year trying to win every every puck race even when it was fruitless to do so. Lias received praise for his smarts and defensive acumen, but ended up spending too much time trying to be on the right side of the puck and not enough time trying to force his way into the play. Chytil hears the coach's message about playing in straight lines, but finds himself lost when the other team starts to cycle and players get lost in coverage.

Obviously part of being a rookie: trying to find the balance between gaining the coach's trust and figuring out "how to play my game".
I mean, that's what I say to console myself when I looked at Howden's deeper numbers last year.

Strome isn't any worse of an offensive player than Namestnikov is. I'd actually say he had a slight edge. I think Vlad is the better skater and a bit better defensively. He's not as north-south as Strome is though. Towards the end of the year Quinn was singling out Strome for praise so I don't know----it's a debate I guess. Strome has another RFA year--Vlad doesn't. Strome is 900K cheaper so better bang for the buck. They're both really 3rd liners IMO--I won't have a problem when the team moves on from either. I expect Vlad to get moved this year for sure--$4 mil per is kind of pricey. Unless he explodes offensively this year (doubtful) there's no way I'd give him that again. If Strome wants more than $3.1 mil he's getting now he better figure on 40-45 points. I'm doubtful about that too.

Panarin-Z-Buch
Kreider-Chytil-Kakko
Lemieux-Howden-Kravtsov
Namestnikov-Andersson-Strome/Fast
Nieves

Wonder who will be the odd man out. We basically have 14 forwards right now.
Looks like Andersson or Howden.

Strome is most likely centering, due to the youngsters there. So Nieves, Howden and Andersson battle for the fourth line center spot. Left and right forwards look set the way you have it.

I really hope Chytil can earn his spot centering the second line. It won't be easy.

Namestnikov is the hair in this soup right now. 4 mil on a throw away forward that is blocking at least someone Andersson or maybe even Kravtsov from being able to start with This team. Can’t wait for him to be gone
Namestnikov will be in demand when 2/3 of his contract is burnt off this year and another piece is retained.

So the first two lines are perfect. Leave that alone for a minute.

Quinn has Namestnikov Lias Strome together.

Lemieux McKegg Fast together

Haley with Howden and Kravtsov.

We’ve got too many players.

Naa, Names, Lias, Strome, Lemiuex, Howden, and Fast will make the team.
Among Kravtsov, McKegg, Haley, one will be the 13th forward. Now I think if Kravtsov makes opening night roster, then Quinn will have a tough time getting everyone time. It might be better off starting Kravtsov in the AHL and letting him dominate for most of the season down there for a 2nd half call up instead of having him play 10 min a night and sit 20% of the games. Haley, McKegg, (don't forget Nieves) can be good 13th forwards who sit more often. A trade can still happen too but not holding my breath on that one.

parallel experience and voice here my friend
just adding I have not yet forgiven Park+Ratelle for Vadnais+Espo
and lest we forget, Joe Zanussi
Heard about the Park+Ratelle trade on the 6 o'clock news. Yes, once upon a time that was what you had to watch to get sports news. I remember both Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford, and Marv Albert as the local sports guys.

Sounds like McKegg is the favourite over Nieves as the spare

Unless someone goes a kid like Kravtsov will start in the AHL. Depends on his camp of course

Having the time of my life right but wanted to run back to good ole HF to say you are my crew and we are gonna have a great season this year. LGR
You can be my wingman anytime

That ‘covers’ his salary until you have to replace them

Yes but that's part of the rationale.
We need to recover their salary NOW regardless, but we do happen to have guys in pipeline, various eta 1-3 years down the road, to replace. Claesson appears to be buh-bye but if we get an early Staal exit, I'm sure we can either find an RD stopgap and then return Hajek to LD, or just a counterpart LD stopgap.

The other critical thing to remember is there is an expansion draft, and I'd rather pare down our excess depth and get something, leaving scraps for Seattle. But you have to get ahead of the curve NOW or at least soon. You don't wait a year + to unload Skjei/Deangelo when everybody else is also dealing with exp draft and the returns are less.

If they can find a way to clear that much cap space to keep Kreider and if he will sign it--okay, great. However I'm not trading my best left side defender at least until I know I have a better one ready to replace him......and maybe that's Miller but he ain't here yet and when he does get here it may take him a year or two to get to the level he needs to be at to start thinking about moving on from Skjei.

I do find it a bit strange that you're for hanging on to an older Kreider and for getting rid of two younger defensemen. Usually you want to dump the veteran.

Although Kreider provides a beast factor that is currently unmatched [KK a worth add there], I am open minded about moving him. But what has to be acknowledged is that an extended Kreider, whether kept or dealt, is worth more than an unextended one. That is the reality, and most other factors should capitulate in order to realize that profit and avoid that loss [if we go the other way] of value.

Skjei commanded what he did, God bless him.
We did not know we would have what we have now, and sure, there is likely to be growing pains.
I would have jettisoned Staal and kept Shatty, made another cap move or two, and tried to bring back Claesson as a cheap 1 yr stopgap.

And Deangelo had to mature.
We could not move him for substantial return, until now, he at least fetches decent ++ value.

But now that this is the current situation, we should go THERE.
Fortune favors the bold, at least usually.

Also I am for a 4-5 yr CK deal, not 6 or 7.
Age is not good for a game that favors a younger man, usually.
However Kreider is a remarkable athlete and barring unforeseen injury will continue to have an extended prime in his early 30s.
This is atypical of most players.

Also, there is plenty of room for both to grow, and Skjei's game has varied with systems and quality of partner.
Off hand he is probably our best skater, especially backwards, pivotal for D coverage.
But with some more experience, I think Hajek very soon [a year ish] will match/eclipse as to an overall game.

There’s a decent amount of money to resign the coming off the books soon, the thing is they just have to be smart with it and not do unnecessary things like resigning Kreider just because we all like him
