Fox was not that noticeable and I had no clue Schneider changed his number until gametime.
The rangers being able to win without fox having to carry the mail the whole time is massive. Fox is human and he gets worn down when he has to carry the transition game himself. Jones offering another defenser that can get the puck moving is a big deal for this team.

Did anyone else get injured besides VK?
I heard blais stubbed his toe in the press box...

Just got back from the game. One play that I felt that went unnoticed by people in my section was Panarin’s defensive play in the first period. I think it was about to be a 2 on 1 and he forced the puck handler to take a shot that Igor can easily save. I think it went wide anyway but I don’t remember the details of that.
Another one is right prior to the 3rd goal I believe, Trouba closed Kuch out before a shot on a partial breakaway. Unheralded, but without it, we may be looking at 2-2 instead of 3-1

I kind of want them to extend K'AM now. The way he's playing, I don't know how we afford him by the end of the season. I don't know where the kid keeps finding all these additional levels to his game.

Unrelated, I loved the swagger to Bread's game tonight. Been awhile since I've seen him do that for a full game.

We looked much better conditioned.

Everyone looked quicker
Yes, yes, yes.

I said all last year they looked only average for NHL teams in terms of conditioning and I think that showed as they went through the playoffs, but there is something to be said about not being stuck in your own end most of the time 5v5. Let's hope some of the things we saw tonight become new trends for this team.

Wasn't a fan of Carpenter in preseason, but that 4th line, whether it was Vesey early or Goodrow after later on, looked impactful.

Reaves (for himself) seemed to have an extra pep in his step, and was a physical force. Carpenter did some good work in dots and was great along walls. Vesey and Goodrow both played great on the LW (aside from 21s penalties).

Goes a long way if you can have 4 lines you trust, which we didn't always until after deadline last year.

What is there to say? Team good. Zibby great. Igor great. Carpenter putrid ass.

Carp looked okay? At least he did live and it seemed like the 4th line barely played.

Zib was a don. Miller was a don. Igor was a don. I did not think anyone was really putrid. Even Revo had a few good shifts.

Cal Foote looked like Tampa kept Hajek and made him shoot right handed

was anyone aware that Mika had 8 points in 2 games at the beginning of the 2019 season?

:sarcasm:

hope he doesn't slow down too much/often this year. when he plays like this, it's almost impossible to contain him

Another thing that ESPN did to a bit of talking about was Jones. Seeing a lot of time against guys like Paul, Maroon and to a lesser extent Perry, I thought Jones did a decent job at choosing when to fully engage physically versus using positioning to line up for a stick/poke check. He stands 0 chance to ever out muscle guys like that, but if he can outsmart them, he'll be just fine. Thought he looked really good.

Another note on defense is Fox may have been, to me anyway, one of our least noticeable defesnemen. Nothing to complain about, because if thats the case, we will be just fine. It won't always be the case, so Fox will be fine and the team will be better for it with 6 competent defensemen instead of 5.

I think our PP has the potential to be better than last season. Especially now with Trocheck and the way he reads and pops higher in slot for shooting position (and the fact hes a better shooter than Strome), we quite literally have 5 scoring threats at all times. I really liked Trochecks game tonight, could be a big season for Panarin, Trocheck and whoever the 3rd member is on that line.

The best thing about tonight was they were playing with pace. At even strength they started to look like Gallant’s Vegas team where they just come at you in waves. We didn’t see enough of that last season.

Trocheck with his speed and tenacity at 2C brings a sorely lacking dimension to that line. Panarin was dancing out there too, he looked good.

Even down a forward and getting into penalty trouble we basically had the Lightning on their heels all night. Sure it’s only game one of the season but I was very happy with the overall performance of the game.

If Kakko stays on the 1st line the majority of the season, he'll be putting in 30+.
30 would be best case scenario I'd say. I'd put a lock on 20 and a more likely 25 if he stays there whole year. Just touching the puck on a breakout on a line with Kreider and Zibanejad may get him 30 assists though. Feeling a breakout year coming for the kid, some combination of 20-30 of each for 50+ points.

Didn't see enough of Krav to form an opinion on his play tonight, but I know Laf looked good on the wing the rest of the way. Depending on how long Krav is out, Laf could take ahold of that spot and not let go. Think 13 could have his 1st 20 goal season no matter which line he plays on, but playing on that 2nd line could bring his assist totals up and match Kakko's 50 points I'm expecting.

Not sure where Blais fits at this point when he's healthy (if he ever stays healthy). Maybe 3W with Chytil and either Krav or Laf, depending who ultimately gets that 2RW spot.

Honestly don't know who would come out of lineup. Assuming Goodrow 4C Carpenter scratch would be first move.

Dominant game - Vasilevsky is the only reason that wasn't a blowout.
Vasilevsky and the officials.
I was there. Refs were ass.

Jones is awesome. Kravstov broke after 2 shifts.
I know game management has been a thing for a long time but is it even more noticeable now, maybe because of all the coverage. I’m feeling like this is The Game Management Era. Almost as bad as The NZ Trap Era.

PP1 is so good. Trocheck even seems like an upgrade on Strome in the bumper spot. Moves around a lot more and looks to shoot. Gives Panarin another option to pass to and makes that unit even harder to defend.

Would love for the kids to get more power play time but hard to argue with giving the first unit most of the 2 mins when they’re that dominant. For the 20s the second unit is going to get, they should just put out the Trouba-Miller pair with the kid line. Miller should be at the point with Trouba lined up for 1-timers. That unit of 5 can just keep going at even strength.
