Does anyone have firsthand experience with the military humvees that you can buy from auctions? I want something to use on my property for things like going out and fixing fence, cutting and dragging out a tree, taking out bags of feed, or pulling a trailer with some hay bales. The 2 door with the truck bed option seems to fit what I am looking for. I am curious how they are to keep maintained? Are they a PITA to work on are parts expensive or are they pretty easy to keep going?

I have heard they are slow, unreliable and a PIA. But I have no first-hand experience whatsoever so take that as it may.

Lol @ poking the bear

Not an expert but I imagine parts are hard to find. Not sure why you'd buy a Humvee to be a farm truck in the first place. I like the idea of buying one though...

Well around here a clapped out farm truck seems to be priced like it is made out of gold in this economy. Not that I expect the humvee to be cheap either, but I saw them and the wheels started spinning in my head.

for like $6k i think it might be fun to get one myself just for nostalgias sake. Except not even a little bit practical in suburban life.
Govplanet.com seems to have a bunch in various conditions.

used car prices are ludicrous right now. my car's dealer value shot up another $4k over the last few months. I would absolutely hate to be in the position of buying right now.

i'm almost positive i've opined about this before but can someone tell me why people would buy a fantastic driving car like a 911 of any stripe and just bring it out on special occasions? I would drive the shit out of it. Sort of related but does anyone have one of those apps that track your driving habits for your insurance company and do you know if all drivers on your policy have to use it in order for you to get a discount or just one okay? Also a few of them claim it won't negatively impact your rates but I'm not sure i trust that. If it notices i drive over 100 fairly regularly (in bursts) would they just straight up decline to send me a renewal?

Amen brother. Porsche in particular has made it very obvious they want their cars to be driven, not collected. They're putting out content right now that is simply unreal. Nobody does precision like Porsche. I know you actually have a real topic to talk about in the rest of your post but instead of addressing it I am going to go full ADHD and blab on how much more I've been turned on to Porsches than I used to be.

Cayman GT4 RS: I'm going to say it right now, it's the best-sounding 6-cylinder car ever made. Fight me otherwise. The engine note almost reminds me of the (borderline untouchable) Lexus LFA. My favorite PDK Porsche.

911 GT3: Might not sound quite as good as the GT4RS but it's better looking and performing at the track IMO. Plus you can get the touring version with an awesome short-geared GT manual tranny and drive it on the road like it's a freaking Miata on super-steroids. I personally like daily-driving a manual and would prefer the PDK at the track, so a 911 GT3 Touring in Shark Blue and the 6-speed might theoretically be my ideal Porsche. I'm trying not to think about how awesome the GT3RS will be.

911 Turbo S: Probably the best supercar for the daily on the planet, and with winter tires and the axle lift system it can handle winter too given the AWD. I'll put it short and sweet: If you're trying to race against one of these and you're not in a Model S Plaid, a multi-million dollar hypercar, or a comically overtuned monstrosity (all three of which I don't like)...then you will lose. You will lose, and you will probably lose badly. It also just so happens to be reasonably comfortable and accommodating too...you just have to be careful with it because once those turbos kick in you will have been transported out of this solar system. I would lament that you can't get it with a manual but I'm not sure I could easily control this car with one.

Then you have the Carrerra models that are a blend of the racing and daily-driving features, and much closer to "affordable." There's also other models like electric shit that I couldn't care less about because I absolutely HATE HATE HATE electric cars from an enthusiast standpoint.

There's only one problem: right now it's borderline impossible to get a GT4RS or GT3, and those are the ones I'd want the most. I love the Turbo S but I don't trust myself in it.

tldr please someone buy me a 911 GT3 or a Cayman GT4RS with the Weissach package

lol I never tire of enthusiastic porsche stans! I'm still in a position where i haul kids around fairly frequently so it's more of a long term lust situation for me and less an actual plan but I do look for used occasionally and it's just depressing when I see a 2 year old car with like 4k miles on it. Recently talked with someone at a block party who has a 2018 (i think) Carrerra S he plans on keeping under 5k miles a year and has all these charts predicting when the optimal time to sell will be. he caught my judgy look.
I guess i can understand people who buy them mostly for the investment opportunity but it's still kind of irritating. Didn't another manufacturer contract when a buyer could re-sell their car to avoid the investment flippers? Was that with the Ford GTs? It has to be a double edged sword for some brands. on one hand the hype and desire is good for making money but on the other if it's a brand truly passionate about their product it's got to be galling to see them all sitting around in garages.

That would drive me insane. How could anyone buy such an incredible machine and not want to enjoy it as much as possible?

The only Porsche I'd want more for an investment purpose than a driving purpose would be the Carrerra GT, which for that and a few other reasons is not my favorite Porsche despite it being an exquisite vehicle.

It's my same deal with the Ferrari halo cars: are they too rare and valuable to actually drive? Enzo himself would have been so absolutely and thoroughly disgusted at even the suggestion of such a thought that he'd slap you on the spot and throw you out of Modena.

@rynryn and regarding your point about resale, the Lexus LFA I believe was originally set up as a sort of lease-to-own sort of deal so that you couldn't immediately flip it. As for why on Earth anyone not in trouble with money would actually ever want to sell a Lexus LFA in the first place, that's another story...

0 to 9000 rpm in 0.6 seconds.
I hate myself for doing it but i make the same damn joke every time they ask me what kind of loaner i want at audi when my car is getting serviced and they have one on the floor or in one of the bays: r8 (speaking of v10's that sound great)

Didn't have one last time i was in but they did have an rs6 Avant, which in my mind seems eminently practical.

Screaming Lamborghini V10 for the win! :)

I maintain the R8 Quattro is right up there with the 911 Turbo S in the everyday supercar category. Not as fast but it does sound better due to the naturally aspirated V10. It's slower (because basically everything is slower than the 911 Turbo S) but a little softer.

I could see treating it like I do my Shelby. Fair weather only... but I don't think I'd ever be a fan of buying it and then only drive it on special occasions. Cars are built to be driven. I just went over 45k miles on the Shelby. If I don't get the weather cooperating, and fail to reach between 5-7k miles in a season, I'm disappointed!

I knew someone else who bought a shelby, had it for 4 years, put less than 2k miles on it, but then sold it because he needed a car he could "drive more often." Why did he even bother in the first place if he was afraid to drive it?

You had to have been a previous Ford GT buyer AND guaranteed you wouldn't sell it within 2 years or so.
I believe there was a celebrity that bought one, then sold it within 6 months, Ford took him to court and won some big cash in return for the breach of contract too.

yeah you drive yours a reasonable amount and there's definitely appeal to keeping miles low if you're planning on keeping it because you love it and want it to last but it's the people who have them and don't even drive them more than once or twice a summer that make me cringe. then you get situations where one of those people gets a wild hair up their butt or wants to show off one day, doesn't have a feel for the car and ends up planting it in a starbucks when it gets away from them.

Saw one of these in Boston Common today. Jealous...doesn't even begin to describe me at that moment. Thankfully I didn't like the color (Lava Orange, and it needed a wash), because if it were Shark Blue I probably would have chained myself to the door handle.

So I had a first date with a woman lastnight. First date in like 5 years.(I'm 38). Anyways she comes with her 2018 Range Rover so naturally I stole the keys and started poking and prodding around while she was on the phone. I've never been in one so I was curious. It all looked nice n fancy, but I got the feeling of a cheap build. Not 1 minute later I'm digging around in the back seat and see some plastic lever And I'm like oooh whats thats do? So I pulled and of course the thing snaps off. I tried putting it back on but no go so I just left it resting in position and didn't tell her about it :) lol

As for the date, we went for a nice walk and just sat and talked in my truck till like 2:30 am. I did end up with some smooches, so I may have to fess up eventually LMAO

Don't you dare, not unless/until things get serious.

The positive thing to take away here is that you have a go-to place in her car to hide a bag of shit in case you two become an item and she hypothetically cheats on you.

No but seriously, we're all pulling for you man. :)

HAHAHA. She went went over my rig pretty good too. I don't think she's a car nut, but I'm glad she has some interest. Smart me did the air freshener mod and a quick detail....it paid off

Sitting in the dealer, getting the 45k service done. Just had them order up new shoes for the Shelby... was able to squeak out a full season last year on the old Michelin Pilot SuperSport tires, which enabled me to hold off on the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S upgrade to this year. (Got the same tires on the Audi last year, they're fantastic, expecting an even better experience with them on the Shelby!)

Also jumping up from 285s on the rear to 295s... get more rubber on the road.

Also looks like the car needs its first alignment done.

37, 3 kids, Divorced. Put my very weak game on a much younger gal 5 years ago. I'm typing this from her house. You will never come clean on breaking that lever. Ever. You've already told too many people.

She is far from a car nut, but she is a self proclaimed "wheel snob." She likes a nice flashy wheel on a lower profile tire.

😂 I fixed it lastnight. Turns out it was just some cover for the factory baby seat harnesses. They might need to come off anyways, I'm doing pretty good 😊

And congrats on younger, I went 4 + and am extremely happy. She questioned me on it and I just said there's something about my favorite baseball glove...she didn't get it lol
