I like the deal for Rakell though. He was important to sign regardless of what direction they went with Malkin.

This is a player we already know works here. Bringing in someone else is an unknown.
And even when he's not scoring, he was one of our best forwards defensively.

No PGH discount in any way. Had very little association with the team so he was essentially a UFA signing.

I do feel he was genuine when he said he enjoyed it here. But yea, certainly no discount.

I think this contract is best described as "fair". This is what Rakell would have gotten in UFA, this wasn't a discount like Rust and Letang gave the team.

It'll be a bargain if he's healthy and has Geno as his C.

Pens have a little over 10 mill in space now. They need to deal one of Petts/Zucker and probably Kapanen, unless Kapanen is gonna sign below 3 mil.

On CapFriendly I added Rakell, signed Geno to 6.1, Trochek to 5.9 over 7 years and traded Pettersson to Detroit for a pick. That gives the Pens 2.3 mill to add a depth forward and say goodbye to Kapanen. Would be really nice to be able to move Zucker for a cheaper, lower ceiling forward.
