I'd rather give too much term to a good player like Rakell than give too much term to a depth player like McGinn, Tanev or Johnson, so I don't see any reason to complain here.

What about a great player like Malkin
Well they already met Malkin's demands and I'm all for them giving him 4 years at $6 million a year. If he doesn't want to take that, that's on him.

Again, I like Rakell and would be happy to see Jake-Sid-Rakell a permanent line.
I just think if you're gonna go for the full six years, you gotta chip away at the AAV a bit. I don't think it *really* matters one way or another, but even as someone hoping Rakell would be back, this is a hefty contract.

Got it..........then what??????? That team that gave up a 3 -1 lead in the playoffs is coming back. I should also note that everyone mid 30's and beyond is less...... to what degree is unknown, but less.

Who reported that Malkin’s camp wanted 6x4. Lots of tweets saying that’s what was offered but what source said that’s all Geno wanted. I forget.

Now that's a good point worth considering. That rumor is coming from Rossi, so if we're assuming that he's full of shit with his "the Penguins didn't offer $6 million a year for 4 years", should we assume he's serious with Malkin's ask?

Love how we used to complain about the lack of top6 wingers. Now we have tons of options and people are complaining about…. Top 6 options.
Valeri Nichushkin is two years younger so I consider comparing his 8 year deal to Rakell's 6 years fair. When you look at their track records Rakell has a higher peak, but has slowed down somewhat. Nichushkin is coming off a career year, but wasn't even close to a Rakell level production before this season.
To get Rakell at 1.125MM less on AAV seems like fair if not good value compared to the market.

We have Jake, a bonafide top line winger. Rust, a guy whose numbers are inflated playing with Sid and Jake, but still a top-6 winger comfortably. And Rakell, a guy closer to a 2nd/3rd line tweener. /shrug
Zucker and Kap are trash. Pretty solidly 3rd line options on a legitimately deep team.
Regardless of who the 2C is, the team still needs a significant offensive punch to be added to that 2nd line at wing, imo.
Just because Rob Rossi says those were Geno’s demands doesn’t make it true…we have no idea what Geno wants except that he apparently wants to hear from other teams about his perceived value…that’s likely going to make it so the Pens can’t resign him
People once infatuated with Rakell are now turning on because the contract came before or costed the team #71.

Geno's camp has been feeding bullshit to Rossi all off-season so the dude can scramble to twitter to post it and get clicks. He'll run with anything they tell him without a second thought because it helps him pretend to still be close to Geno and it helps him claw back to some relevancy after missing lengthy time due to illness.
Anybody that's taken the "Geno's emotionally devastated--'they don't want me'" or "I'm a rich guy, it's not about money" stuff at face value--big yikes. Gullible as all hell.

The only other option is not signing any half decent UFA's. They are are getting long-term deals. We've got nothing worth trading for anything good and no legitimate prospects.
To sum it up, we're going to win the Cup.
