People groaned about the Stallibgs trade, but Perez is basically Stallings and we got a couple of lottery tickets prospects as well.

BTW, this ump is trash. I'd be gone by now if I was the manager. Just really bad lol.

Not a good night so far for Park. Issues in the field, and poor at the plate. 2K's and 2 LOB.

Agreed, I was vehemently opposed to it but it looks like Perez is serving an identical function to Stallings. Nicolas is a pretty interesting arm, and Thompson should be a serviceable enough backend guy in PNC Park. I think it could have made sense to just bit the bullet and keep Stallings indefinitely, but if we have two cheap supplementary type guys, hard to complain. The big thing was his work with the young pitching staff, and Perez has smoothly fit right in there.

I actually don't mind Contreras coming out of the pen. He's going to have an innings cap this year no matter what, so let him get experience getting MLB hitters out. He can pitch a couple innings at a time pretty easily with the rotation we currently have, and then later in the summer he can transition to the rotation for a while.

They didn't just get that, they also got Thompson.

The Stallings trade is going to end up one of BC's best with the Pirates. Perez isn't any worse than Stallings, Thompson is a cost controlled back of rotation starter and Scott and Nocolas are having good starts in AA.

The only thing with Contreras is that it's a certainty he'll go back to AAA for service time manipulation. I think we'll let him get a little bit more work in and then eventually he'll go back to be "stretched out as a starter," i.e., spend 4-6 weeks in AAA so that we gain a year of control. And really, since he has an innings limit anyways and we aren't going anywhere, it's hard to fault that move as cynical as it is.

Is he supposed to have any upside?
He's performed at AAA but doesn't really seem to, IMO. He's kind of a utility type but doesn't really have the carrying skill to be a bench guy in that mold.

I actually thought we might take him over Castillo so that Castillo could get every day ABs in AAA. I don't hate giving him some ABs every now and then given the state of the roster, but he shouldn't be starting over Castillo in any kind of quasi-platoon, which is what Shelton seems to basically have going with the bottom 4-5 spots in the order so far.

He still has options so we might keep him around for a bit as depth, but with Castillo's emergence, I don't really see much point in keeping him around.

I think this team will be really fun to watch once you call up Cruz and you can get a halfway decent game out of your starter.

I thought the Cubs game that the Pirates lost 2-1 was a very enjoyable game to watch, even though they lost. I just don't want to see a game where the Pirates pitching is so bad that they don't even have a chance.

The previous 2 years, before this season started, I watched one game over 2 seasons. The O'Neil Cruz debut.
I got ya by maybe 20 games, so I checked out too. It's been a grim few seasons for sure. Spent most of my attention on organizational development and the minors.

This team feels like there's something there. Something I can't describe, but it kinda feels almost like a legit real team in the house. Or at least, the beginnings of one.

Tonight's the 1st time I've felt that.

Yeah, it's the promise of good farm system at all levels, that has me excited/intrigued. And on the major league level?? Probably still gonna be a long season, but hopefully they bottomed out last season, and this is the beginning of progress.

This is a lot of ifs, but if you have Gamel, Vogey, and Tsutsugo all performing ok, have Castillo in the lineup and Cruz called up, then this team is decent enough to hang with any team in the division, and probably also most NL teams besides maybe the Dodgers and some NL East ones. It would at least be a game fairly often, even if the pitching is still a big weak spot.

I think they are going to lose 100, but if enough broke the right way, there's room to shave a lot of that off. Not to put too much on Cruz, but he can seriously impact the lineup. Things would look a good bit different if he was in there every night, even if he has ups and downs.
