They also had a second to first double play set up before, and I'd argue that a home to first double play with Chavis running is likely more challenging to pull off than a second to first double play with Cruz running.

Obviously it's a moot point, but I think they were scared to pitch to Cruz there.
 
The only concern I have with Marcano is that it seems like his results are going to be heavily BABIP influenced, based on how he swings. He seems like a pretty heavy groundball hitter that likes to slap balls all around the field. Not nearly as bad as Hayes, but still trending more towards that style.

He generally doesn't hit the ball that hard and his swing has looked pretty flat. But with that being said, the only real negative there is that he's not going to be hitting many HRs. A slap hitter who gets on base a lot and is good defensively seems like a pretty ideal piece at the top of the lineup.

I don't mind it with the impending ban of shifts.

Marcano offensively kind of reminds me of a very poor man's Ichiro Suzuki. Like, again, stylistically...obviously Ichiro is a HOFer and Marcano is unproven.

I think a better description is basically Kevin Newman who plays LF :laugh:

Or rather, what Newman is doing this year and what he did in his rookie year.

There's some serious "leg infield hits out by basically leaning towards 1B in the swing" that only a lefty hitter can achieve. You start 83 feet away from the bag.

Then again, Marte put up ridiculous BABIP numbers for years
 
Nick Gonzales is beginning his rehab in the FCL tonight. Don't expect him to come out flying given how much time he's missed and the average year he was having, but hoping he can finish strong in September.

Davis getting close as well.

I'd expect Nick to do well based on the lack of great breaking balls in the FCL.

Well yeah, he should be able to pummel those guys. I'd wager he'll play there a handful of games, then jump over to Bradenton for another couple and then back to Altoona.

Basically just hoping he can finish the year strong in AA to give him some confidence going into 2023. Obviously the AFL is an option as well and given he's missed a large chunk of time, seems like a likely route for him (and Davis).

Easy to say with good success so far tonight for him, but I think it holds true in general. One of the biggest leaps Keller has taken in 2022 is that he seems in control when he's on the mound. The game is operating according to his pace, and generally he just seems unfazed.

Obviously, he's also executing pitches better and so on, but I think this is one of the parts of his game that makes me confident he can be a rotation anchor.
 
I don't mind the Pirates resting Contreras for a while if it means he'll be able to play a full season next year. This season is mostly pointless anyway, so if they have concerns with Contreras regarding his health, I have no concerns with them cutting back on his innings for the year.

He's going to be their ace going forward, or he at least needs to be their ace. I'm totally good with them being overly cautious with him, especially in a lost season.
 
I have been outspoken about being skeptical that Cherington will can Shelton this winter, and I continue to think that's true, but even if you give him the most liberal possible leeway for having a terrible roster and an overtly tanking front office, his strategic decision-making is horrid. Yesterday he plays for the win in cutthroat fashion by not letting Thompson go deeper into the game as his pitch count allowed, and today he leaves the soft-tossing lefty in the game in high leverage vs. RH bats. Clueless.
 
Credit to Shelton for finally showing a f***ing pulse and getting himself tossed.

This umpiring crew has been a clown show with its calls in key moments tonight. I cannot wait until these idiots are out of jobs.
