On Keller, he's been fantastic since coming back into the rotation in late May, there is no way you can take away from what he has done. 11 of 12 starts with 5 or more innings and 10 of 12 starts with 3 or fewer earned runs against speaks for itself. I think the biggest thing that makes me hesitate with him is the fact that his results aren't all that different than what he has had in the past outside of ERA.

Over those 12 starts, he has 68 hits, 56 strikeouts and 23 BB/9 in 68.1 innings (8.96 H/9, 7.24 K/9 and 3.02 BB/9). His saving grace is that he has flat out not given up HRs, he only has 5 HRs against in those 12 starts which ends up a 0.65 HR/9. But that makes me wonder if he's actually pitching better or if he's having a 2 month stretch of batters just not barreling him up.

I'm in a wait and see pattern with him. He's been very good for about 2 months, but I'm a bit skeptical with him being able to retain these numbers without being more of a strikeout guy.

That ump was way too aggressive getting into Shelton's face. Stalking his every more.

You can tell Wehner gets tired of Block's stupid questions. Block, boring and annoying. I don't see what value he brings to the telecast at all.

Cruz has amazing tools but the scouts are right when they say he is clearly guessing up there. Compounding the issue is a hitting coach that doesn’t know a ball from a mango

Bautista has some nasty stuff

I just saw a 100+ MPH fastball. Which is great, but the other pitches were average at best and he couldn't locate them.

It's still tough but you wish Cruz didn't go up hacking at 1-1. I think the AB changes drastically.

He'll get there on the K's. The light has just turned in metaphorically speaking, he's still in the figuring-things-out/growing-confidence phase.

What I've noticed is Mitch often throws the Sinker in those dangerous HR counts. They may hit it hard, but rarely with a positive launch angle, even when he elevates it near the top of the zone. That's been the Revelation that's allowing Keller to learn how to pitch in the Bigs without getting destroyed IMO.

GMBC on tdl....

"We had tons of phone calls, discussed a lot of stuff that didn't happen now, but may in the off season."

Usual kind of situation where a formerly competent player is let go and the logic immediately jumps to "Pirates should get him", but I think this is actually a fairly straightforward call: it will cost a little bit of money to see Reyes audition as a power RH DH bat, and if it doesn't work out, easy to non-tender him in the offseason. It's almost like the opposite of JVH, in that Reyes is simply a power option from the right side and DH-only.

JVM has had ample opportunity to succeed, and though I am not confident that Madris will hit, we can easily have Madris and Chavis handling 1B duty for the remainder of the season while more ABs are freed up for Marcano and others.

If Reyes can click, then you add some needed power for next year at little cost and can focus on improving the rotation depth (we should try like hell to get Q back -- I think it's the only feasible option outside of a trade) as well as 1B and an OF spot.

100% yes on Reyes.

Bye Jake! Picked up another gem via waiver. You go front office! What is a Kevin Padlo?

Nice to see a big win yesterday powered by the offense. In terms of lineup construction, I don't know if Shelton has a better option that sandwiching Cruz between Hayes and Chavis. Chavis also strikes out far too much, but at least it will force managers to think twice about sending a LOOGY out every time we get into the 5th inning or later.

I'm hoping to see some prospect promotion news today or tomorrow. Rodriguez got a few days off at the end of the week, and he's due for the challenge at AA. I hope we consider pushing Triolo up to AAA -- he's someone who might either himself be trade bait this offseason, or else push Bae, Gonzo, or others into that category, depending on how the season finishes up. Good utility IF depth with speed and bat-to-ball skills, great defender, though seemingly not at SS, which might make him more expendable given that we have Hayes.

Edit: and for what it's worth on this front, Kiley has an updated team rankings list out (Pirates are fourth) and mentioned that he's bumped Endy into the 50 FV range. I think he's had maybe the best season in the system, but it would be really emphasized if he can finish out with a solid 6 weeks in Altoona. Greensboro is a real launching pad, and the step up in pitching will also be a good test for him. My sense is that it's best to be somewhat conservative towards players until they have some time at the AA level under their belt.

I get why some guys don't want to be a Catcher - it's the most physically demanding job in baseball. You're always sore, always bruised, always focused on other things than hitting.

My guy coached Endy Rodriguez for a time in 21. Says Endy dosn't want to catch primarily, and there's great value in having a guy like him that can probably play 4-5 positions.

I'm hoping E-Rod has changed his mind and wants it now. It would seem that's a possibility given how much he's been behind the plate this summer. If so, I think this one play shows why he's likely The Man in Pittsburgh come 24.

Lopez has been a legit prospect scouts have been waiting on to pop. Has a 50 hit tool & 60 power tool for FV. Decent glove, not very fast though. He's on one of the best hot streaks I've seen from a Pirates' prospect. That said, he'll have to improve on that 4.5% walk-rate if he's to make it with this management team.

The Stroke is sweet IMO.
