Develop three hitters worth a damn not named "Bryan Reynolds." I'll give him two more years to do it.

I'm not really surprised no one wanted Gamel, and the MI besides Cruz and Marcano looks murky, so I imagine that's the source behind keeping Newman vs. low ball offers. But Cherington publicly committed to a roster shuffle after the deadline and the only thing we're set to do is add the MLB reliever we acquired a week ago and then kept in AAA.

I will honestly be pretty shocked if we don't DFA Tsutsugo, but otherwise I don't know what to expect. Gamel has been mostly competent for us, but there's no reason he should get at-bats over Mitchell or Madris, not to mention Suwinski, Swaggerty, etc. .

well then Buy them & do it
I couldn’t even if I wanted too which I’m sure you already knew. Also, even if I actually could, why would Nutting sell the team to me? I’m just a Debbie downer who likes seeing the teams he roots for actually make an attempt to win. I mean he has it made. The guy can keep spending the bare minimum on a shit team and he has a segment of people that always blame the system for his lack of spending so he will keep stuffing his pockets

That would be one hell of a radar to be on a guy with a whole 18 game resume in 3yrs!!!
Mid 90’s fastball, low 80’s slider, splitter.

If I had 5 billion dollars I’d buy the pirates.

If I had 500 million dollars I would pay someone to put Bob nutting’s name on the Epstein ledger

Honestly, I don't have a huge problem with the OFers they're playing in the OF right now. I have a way bigger issue with guys like VanMeter and Tsutsugo getting regular reps, and those guys are pretty much exclusively playing 1B or 2B.

Playing young guys over Gamel makes sense, but I don't dislike Gamel as a regular at all.

How an organization can consistently play someone who's not a 1st year player that's average to below defensively and hitting under .190 in a ML lineup is embarrassing

I think most of us understand that it's both the system and the owner. Nutting Jr. is amazing, has been sighted traveling coach in the middle seat for God's sake.

That's how cheap he is!

This is bare minimum positive, I guess.

The OF discussion is interesting because they already have Reynolds, Allen, Gamel, Mitchell and Madris in the MLB already. Mitchell has been doing pretty well recently, he's OPSing .820 since getting called back up. The Allen experiment has only lasted 6 games so far, so I don't know that they'd pull the plug this fast.

If they DFA JVM and/or Yoshi, they can move Madris to 1st and open up a spot that way. But any of the other moves would seem odd to me. DFAing Allen would seem quick, DFAing Gamel seems like a mistake and sending Mitchell down (until he starts struggling) seems like a mistake.

I agree about Allen, and I think they'll probably want to see Swaggerty and Suwinski force the issue a little bit more. I don't quite get why they pulled the plug on Swaggerty so fast, but he's had an overall fine season even if July was a little down. I think if he can put a good week or two together, it's better to just get him as many MLB ABs as possible.

Gamel is serviceable but there's no future there. I guess letting him play things out might be an audition for a minor reunion, as he's still fine to have for the bench and nobody is forcing him off the team yet. He could also play some 1B.

Marcano isn't in the lineup for Indy tonight, so hopefully that means he's on his way up. There's not really other position players who are locked in right now.

Three great ABs for Cruz vs. Burnes tonight, who has not been sharp at all. He was robbed of his second walk earlier, and I winced a bit at the bad chase, but he needs to be this aggressive for exactly that reason.

He's progressing. I like it. I like it a lot.

Look at that location. Look at the easy 400+ foot power. Very few can do that. Very few.

His power is just stupid easy. That cleared the fence by a lot on a pitch that isn't really easy to do damage with. His swing and approach are dialed in to do that. Rule 1 on whatever marching orders Cherington gives to Shelton better be to get Cruz protected in the lineup, and in the top 4-5. He needs to get as many reps as he can against MLB pitching. Fine to rest him sometimes, even occasionally vs. LHP, but he needs to be a fixture in the top part of the order.

As long as Cruz is playing with the defense he's playing with at SS, I want him playing everyday. As strange as it sounds, the thing selling me on him at this point is his defense and any major offensive contribution is gravy. It remains to be determined to see if that remains, considering he was never billed as a great defensive player coming up, but it's definitely the case right now.

Cruz is currently at 4 DRS at SS in 286.2 innings. That's the same rate of DRS as Hoerner, who is tied for the league lead in DRS among SS this year. If he can provide this level of defense going forward, he'll be a star even if he's batting .225.

Really like to see Yerry used in that scenario and also for him to come through (obviously). It will be interesting to see how we use Bednar down the stretch -- really no point in pushing him too much, innings-wise or stress-wise. He should still close, but I'd be extra cautious and spread some chances to Crowe and others.
