About what I expected.

I'm not enamored with Abrams just as I'm not as enamored as the rest of the board with Cruz.
But that isn't to say I wouldn't gladly take him (or Cruz) if offered.

This feels very Cabrera/Willis-esque

Gore was a top 5 prospect in all of baseball 2 years ago.
Abrams, top 10 (not as high on him myself) at the beginning of this year.
Wood (as Joe Doyle just pointed out) is thought to be a top 10 prospect in all of baseball by a growing number of scouts.
Hassell is already inside the top 20-30 prospects in all of baseball.

That's the type of return a superstar will get you.

Still, look at what SD added to an already insane roster, just in the last 48 hours. Baseball is broken. It's a pyramid scheme and teams like us simply have the universe stacked against them.

It's crazy to me that the Padres also got to dump Hosmer in this deal as well.

If you put this trade into Baseball Trade Value, it has the Padres getting 171.3 in value to 108.3 for the Nationals. Soto himself has a value of 165.6. Even if you want to ding Soto's value a bit due to the money, it's still a fleece and it would still be without Hosmer being included.

The Hosmer dump is weird to take on from Washington's standpoint, but I'd wager getting Gore in the deal, probably prompted that angle.

I'd have ideally liked 1 more big name prospect in that group, but given the fact that everyone out there knew Soto wasn't staying in Washington, did hurt the overall leverage for Washington, just a bit.

Still, to get 4 guys who did or now rank inside the top 25 prospects in the game, it's a nice return. Not insanely great, but it's a very solid haul all things considered.

It’s the price of “going for it”. I wish Huntington was this aggressive when we were in contention. Might have ended up with Lester to push us over the top.

the padres have to win the World Series or this is catastrophic.

I feel pretty good about the 2 prospect OFs, but Abrams/Gore could each bust big time.

It's like getting Cruz and 2017 Tyler Glasnow as your centerpieces. Maybe you still do it, but it definitely causes some heartburn. I'd so much rather have had something safer like Dylan Carlson as the first piece. Or found a way to get Cronenworth from the Pads.

Goes without saying but SD has to win a WS. Massive presure. They obviously have the market/owner to spend whatever money necessary but you still need a system beneath the ML roster and that has been nuked now.

I mean, why is it catastrophic?

They'll have Tatis, Machado and Soto as their offensive centerpieces for years. Yes they'll be paying them $100M combined but I'd take the three of them and pre-arb fodder over 80% of lineups out there. Certainly ours.

Ok I'm officially saying it - San Diego has dream owners if you're a Bucs fan. That local TV deal can't be too big, they're taking bigtime losses. Dude's must be obsessed - hopefully they don't f*** it up for San Diego, which has been in Pittsburgh baseball hell for decades.

I would love to see San Diego do something with all of this talent and money. Fingers crossed for the Small Market Team playing Yankees-ball.

Hosmer no longer involved cause he isn’t willing to wave his no trade deal looking better for Washington

Tim has "learned the error of his ways" - again:

I’m not sure that the Pirates got equal long-term value in return. Which of the players above will make an impact on the next contender?

Peguero could be an impact player. So could Rodriguez. Contreras as an impact starter. Bednar in the bullpen.

As for average starters, Jack Suwinski leads the group right now, though no one has added comfort. There are some role players in guys like Wil Crowe and potential role players that will emerge from the group of Castillo, Marcano, and other 40-45+ grade players.

As long as there are question marks surrounding Peguero, Rodriguez, Contreras, and Suwinski, the Pirates will be working from behind on these deals. They have the potential to finish ahead, but will need to show that they can finalize the development of these players moving forward.

The Hosmer thing is pretty weird, with SD offering to pay down most of his contract, it's basically just a f*** off move. Sounds like they might try and offload him elsewhere or make it some kind of three team deal. Some people say he's well-liked in the clubhouse, so I thought maybe they wouldn't try to dump him, and it doesn't seem like they are even dumping much of his contract.

WTFF is Nutting going to win Genius??

PSSSSSST don't tell Mr. Brightside!!
Nutting isn’t going to win anything…but he could definitely open up his pocketbook and give the team more then he has ever been willing to. I want to remind everyone that the offseason after a 98 win season, the Pirates big free agent acquisition was… Ryan Vogelsong. The “system” has zero to do with why the Pirates will go through another long stretch of being a bottom barrel team.
