I think the only way Cruz plays OF is if they want Newman to get a game here and there at SS. I think Cruz will be spending a huge majority of his time at SS or DH.

I don’t get the treatment Marcano has gotten since coming back. Hopefully he’s back up soon and hitting lead off where he belongs

It's definitely bad news, but I think it will still be a stretch to have him out there. Gamel, Suwinski, and Reynolds will start most of the games until Gamel is traded. At that point you'll presumably have at least one of Madris, Mitchell, or Swaggerty to call up, and at some point Bae has to come up. Bae's played OF a lot more times than Cruz did, probably a total of 20 or so games in LF and CF. He and Marcano really seem to have similar profiles, with the difference being that Bae has flashed a little more power.

In any case, there's probably not much harm in taking some drills with an eye to the future, but he's been very consistent defensively and it would be so stupid not to try and keep him going downhill, so to speak. I expect Newman to get at least a half dozen starts at short (and that's probably conservative), but that should be doable with Cruz having a day off every week or so and DHing the other times. We'll see -- my biggest worry is that in Newman's first game back, he'll start at shortstop with Cruz on the bench (I expect it tomorrow).

Based upon what I've seen from Cruz lately - this is as much a motivational tool as anything. He only wants to play shortstop, well maybe this kind of stuff will push him to keep improving there. And if he doesn't stick at SS, we'll be glad the Bucs were committed to his OF training.

Yeah, I was surprised by the exit velo too. It was a no doubter. Contact was perfect.
Technology isn't perfect. That had to be 100+.

They can't be playing Yoshi at 1st base with an arm as erratic as Cruz in the field. Yoshi's just way too bad defensively to make it work.

Problem is Vogey can't play the field either. So there you go in terms of smart baseball decisions. Put 2 massive bodies on the 25 man who can't play anywhere and both hit left handed.

I'd do the job for 100K a year Bob. Think about all the savings!

Thank you Mr Reynolds.

Yep, what a signing he was. Anyone looking at add a legit mid rotation arm is watching closely tonight and coming away pretty impressed IMO. Would be pretty sweet to get a few decent prospects for him in a month and then re-sign him in the winter to say a 3 year deal.

Suwinski as I type that out!!

Might be just the random games I tune in for but this Suwinski kid looks like a keeper

They got him for Frazier at the deadline last year and he's been an absolute gem. He's their starting RFer going forward.

If he finishes the year like he has played in the first 65 games in the year, he'll surpass Polanco's best season in the MLB by a comfortable margin. And he's only getting better the deeper into the year it goes.
