Player Discussion Rafaël Harvey-Pinard

Is he a sure thing to be in the starting lineup next season?
No, unless a few long term contracted forwards are traded on top of the UFA not being resigned before next season start.

Habs already have 12 forwards with contract for next season that started on the roster this year (I'm counting Pezz and Caufield even if they technically have to sign a contract for next season). That's one spot open for RHP, Ylonen, Farrell and Heineman...

I will come out and say that I am a sucker for a good tenacious Québécois bottom 6 player (on a reasonable contract ).

This is a great story so far. I hope he can keep it up and become a fixture on the team. You win in the post season with these kind of players that can chip in goals when everything is on the line.

I have never been this excited with our young players since becoming a Habs fan!

Edit : he can also potentially fill in the top 6 temporarily if the coach needs to shuffle lines.

If he keeps progressing and stays on a decent contract, I think we will love this player for years to come.

1. If we keep 14 forwards, that's 2 spots open
2. If Pitlick gets sent down again, that's 3 spots open.
3. Yep, we could trade a vet like Anderson or Hoffman at 50% retained to open up that final spot.

I'd actually also like to see Belzile get a shot at 4c, Evan's move to 3c, and Dvo play wing with CC and Suzuki - to get Dvo's numbers up so we can move him.

Yeahhh I don't see Pezzetta 'outranking' RHP for a 'NHL spot' anymore...
Plus the normal turnover of the offseason will make it so that there will be spots
Pitlick is hardly a guaranteed NHLer as well

Pitlick can get waived again and Pez can start in the press box again until there are injuries.

But that doesn't leave enough spots in the top 12 for all of RHP, Slaf, Farrell, Heineman, and Ylonen. The thing is vets like Hoffnan, Anderson, Armia, and Dvo are hard to move in this capcrunch era. I guess Slaf, Farrell, and or Heineman could start in Laval until there are injuries, since they are waiver exempt, unlike RHP and Ylonen.

There is the same problem with the dmen as with the forwards (if Eddy isn't traded), going 14 forwards means one of Harris, Xhejak, Barron or Ghule is playing in the AHL next season because the team is carrying 7 Ds. Kovacevic/Wideman makes good 6th-8th D so the kids can play and Matheson, Savard and Eddy aren't getting waived.

The only way there are spots opens at both forward and defense is if there are long term injuries again or vets are traded.

Even the goalies are in trouble, since Primeau isn't waiver exempt next season and going by what was claimed off waivers this season, he's a goner if they try to resign him to Laval next year. You can technically carry 3 goalies, but that means 13 forwards and 7 dmen. Also, teams need 3 goalies on NHL contracts so if one is moved (waiver or trade), someone has to be signed to an ELC or NHL contract to replace him (Dichow has another year to his SHL contract, Dobes might want to finish his NCAA, Vbertic is crap and Croteau is still in the USHL).

Anyway, the contractual situation of the Habs has to be cleaned-up before next season start. That will open roster spots for prospects, but until that happens, there is a lots of kids fighting over the crumbs.

Dach
Gallagher

Slafkovsky
Caufield
Dvorak

3 or 4 of Pitlick, Pezzetta, RHP, Ylonen, Farrell, Heineman and our 1st pick.

There's definitely a chance. There's also definitely a chance at least one of Dvorak, Anderson, Armia or Hoffman is moved.

Fair point. However, Pezz should be considered highly expendable.

Habs will make plans for him if he forces their hand though. That means that he finishes the year strong, and has a good camp next year.

Pezz's spot on the roster is that of energy player with grits. He's kind of safe for now because of it. Even more so if Anderson gets traded.

Maybe. Ive just been a bit underwhelmed with him this year. He seems to have lost some of that desperation that he had last year. You see it form time to time but not nearly enough imo.

It's also possible the coaching staff told him to tone it down, but I think he just becomes even more replaceable if he doesn't have the same fire.

I don't know why Arber has to play Pezz's role and got injured in a fight. Pezz is here for a reason and he doesn't play his role. We should get a replacement for Pezz. In the mean time, Arber has to tone it down, he couldn't fight every game.

They will still value what RHP is currently bringing to the team (cough, goals) right now over Pezz's current "intangibles". and I like Pezz
There is 0 way, Pezz makes the team over RHP next year if there is only 1 spot left

Let's see what our contract situation looks like over the summer because I don't expect it to remain as it is. In fact I would say it can't remain where it is because I see that as being detrimental to the rebuild. I surely hope we free up more than one spot that's pathetic given our current roster.

Arber's fighting technique is not very good. He should ask Nilan for a couple of tips.

Someone posted his numbers like 10 fights in 50 games against a number of cavemen. I was sure he didn't want to fight Kane because he was already nursing an injury to a limb/hand which is why Anderson intervened. I don't think he was expecting Desharnais to goad him into one but his nature got the better of him. I saw his facial expressions after the fight and got the impression his disappointment reflected this as much as the injury. He'll learn he can say no if he's carrying an injury and players won't engage.

Nilan has been giving him tips exactly along these lines. It's a learning process for WiFi but nilan is definitely taking him under his wing.

I think nilan really likes the kid and even had him over for dinner.

There's also a chance that this management group attempts to add in the offseason as well.

Whether it's a Monahan type deal, a reclamation project or just a seasoned vet on a 1 yr deal.

I wouldn't put anything past these guys.

Not to mention you need to slot Bedard in there somewhere.
