I assume a deal for Hughes would have salary coming back to the Canucks to make it work, so speaking specifically of his next contract in three years, I think there are a ton of teams that could make it work with this foresight.
- Florida has Ekblad's contract ending this year and they don't have a very large expenditure at defense, relatively speaking (they're actually getting Yandle's buyout off the books this year too).
- Toronto would kill for someone like Hughes on their blueline, and they have Tavares' contract ending this year; they could plan ahead.
- Dallas has a lot of their defense salary coming off the books before Hughes is due, and Heiskanen is signed a few years beyond.
- Vegas would be able to replace Pietrangelo's salary when Hughes' contract is due.
- LA has Doughty coming off the books the same year that Hughes is due his contract increase.
I really don't think Hughes' next contract value would be the biggest consideration - moreso whether he chooses to re-sign with the team that trades for him, and I think that chance is highest when they get him as early as possible so he has time to acclimate. That said, Hughes has no NTC, so if the Canucks knew they weren't re-signing him, he'd be the ultimate rental player that year, and they'd likely recoup huge value at that year's TDL.
In addendum, I think it is funny that Makar and Hughes' contracts are both up in the same season. If Sakic signs Makar early, expect Hughes to ask for slightly more (since Makar has spent his whole career with Colorado, I expect the "hometown discount" to be larger for Makar, and that will factor into negotiatons).
