Speculation: Quinn Hughes wants to contend

Reading the embarrassing logic in this thread

Nemec’s value is still high despite (checks notes) being in the AHL for 3 years

While the reigning Norris winner at 25 years of age, and Vancouver has to accept anything

I think your interpretation is quite embarrassing.

Literally nobody is saying that Vancouver has to accept anything.

And yes, Nemec's value is still quite high. He hasn't been in the AHL for 3 years, as he's split time the past two seasons - including playing 60 NHL games last year and doing quite well.

Nemec had an injury just prior to this season that impacted his play early on. Between Kovacevic's emergence (him and Siegenthaler have been the best shut down pair this season) and the healthy of NJ's defense overall (same 6 guys have played in the past 43 games) it's a numbers game for Nemec, so it's better off for the 20-year old to continue to develop in the AHL at this moment.

But carry on with your simplistic interpretation of the situation.

That would give Detroit the best Top 4 in the league going forward and absolutely cripple them with a non-playoff caliber forward group.

No thanks.
I don't think so. We still have Kasper, Raymond, Larkin, DBC, and can sign guys in FA like Ehlers. Hughes-Seider-Edvinsson-ASP would be absolutely unstoppable.

What cap space are we signing a guy like Ehlers with while we have Raymond, ($8M) Larkin, ($8.7M) Debrincat, ($7.9M) Seider, ($8.5M) Edvinsson (~$8.5M) and Hughes ($7.8M) under contract?

... That's $50M tied up in 6 players. And doesn't factor in Hughes probably asking for $12M+ in 2027, or guys like Kasper, ASP, and Cossa needing secondary contracts.

I missed the second 1st. "Hamilton proceeds" is too nebulous to discuss meaningfully but he should get a good price. I mean, one question: why isn't Hamilton just going to Vancouver directly?

Ha, I missed the other poster suggested Casey + 1st instead of Nemec
I added a 2nd one way and a 3rd going the other. I mean at this point, it'd be a deal massaging conversation. No forum deal can appease everyone. I'm happy to just land in the right ballpark. Thanks for reading.
He 100% could if Van wanted him (and he was willing to waive/doesn't have them on his NTC) but I assumed if Quinn Hughes is going (after Miller and/or Pettersson go) Van is going into a full blown rebuild, and so would prefer futures rather than an older replacement dman.

I think multiple other teams would pay more for him and roll the dice they could entice him to stay. Throw him in a winning environment and he might re-up, there's only speculation his desire to play with his brothers outweighs contending. The Staals never forced themselves together, clubs did it more than anything else.
The Devils are already contending - window just opened.

Still need to field a team, and you can use a Dougie for a couple years. STill a very good D. Great in the room. He's been everything NJ has asked for pretty much. What a great guy.

Then I'd be happy to ship dougie to Van in the deal

Dougie (3 mill retained)
Casey
Mercer

is a doors blown off package imo

Ottawa traded a pending UFA Karlsson at full value.
Idk, Hughes with 2 years left? They can wait for a serious offer.
Because he had agreed to sign long term b4 hand and the Sharks got to negotiate a contract they were happy with (at the time) Details matter

Sure you did Troll…..
Makar fan finally accepting Quinn is the best Dman in the league and this is his way of coping.

The sad thing is people actually think the team would make any trade that makes them worse.

We've already seen this team is fully capable of being competing with the best teams and while addmittingly the situation sucks and were not where we should be a win tonight and were back to controlling our own fate.
Common sense dictates things will get better and things will turnaround I mean the forwards have struggled but the biggest issue has been anytime Lankinen isn't in net it's almost a guaranteed loss but going forward it's Lankinens job to lose.

The defence gets blamed but a deeper dive shows us 32 in save% since Demko came back and with Myers playing as well next to Quinn allowing Hronek and Forbort to form an actual good middle pair is huge while Soucy looks completely different in a lesser role with D-Petey.

My point with this bloated post is there's every reason to think the ship is being righted and I have confidence that our GM won't make any trade just to fix the issue and JR said as much and I find it funny how people think that Demko has no value or that JT a 100 point Centre that quite frankly can take over games on both ends on a steal of a contract isn't worth a package similar to what Miko a pending UFA that plays zero defence and is hailed as lazy as an AV

And with two years left, they have Hughes at an even better deal than Karlsson was ever signed for, especially as a factor of cap %.
Imo that's worth more if you're actually contending, especially considering Hughes is playing Hart level hockey at this stage in his career.

Ya but thing is they can't even start to think about a new deal for another year and with the crazy near term predictions about the cap that could really bite them in the ass. Do they really wanna fork over 15+ mil/year for him in 2 years?

With the cap at 97M next year and then rising above that as we move forward, its easily doable. We have Copp and Compher both earning north of 5M that will come off the books, along with Holl, Petry, and Chiarot. 54M in 6 players (lets say Hughes gets 12) and 47M for the rest is doable:
5 other defensemen - lets say 13M total, 6 (ASP's bridge probably) +3+2+1+1
34M for 10 other forwards: Ehlers at 8, Kasper at 5, leaves 21 for 8 forwards - about 2.5 on average, which is doable as long as you're using the cap intelligently. Factor in that the cap rises above 100M in the years after and you can fit the goalies in easily too. And not all of these guys will be getting their contracts simultaneously.

You could also replace Danielson + MBN with just ASP in my proposal as ASP is pretty redundant if we have Hughes. I think you underestimate just how dominant that D core would be.
