Someone should look up who is the shortest defenceman to ever win a cup. Krup?
There aren't very many.
And you have to go by International competition to get true sizes of players, no marketing trying to enhance a players size and stature. 5'8.5"

Rafalski won 3 Cups and like Hughes I think the 5'10" listed height was/is generous. Rafalski looked really tiny. Torey Krug almost won a Cup along with Grzelcyk.

Hughes is a phenom despite people wanting to downplay his accomplishments. You aren't going to see many defenceman like him in your life time.

Jack Rathbone is going to put up 70 points and defend very well?

the f***?

I think he is very capable of 60 points if given the powerplay time Hughes gets. Do I think he will be as good as Hughes is offensively? No I don't, but I still think he will be an elite offensive contributor if given the opportunity.

true about his age but the issue is he’s been playing hockey for 15 years and this is how he plays. He likes to take chances at the risk of giving up chances. He likes to play out of position. You also can’t change the fact he’s 5’8 and likely never going to weigh more than a buck seventy.

I don't believe that. Up until the 2019/2020 season, hockey was not Hughes' career. Sure, it was a focal part of his life, but he was not surrounded by a plethora of skills coaches, nutritionists, personal trainers, etc. who's sole purpose is to enhance his game play. He also hasn't played at this high of a skill level at any point in his life, and a smart player should realize that he needs to adapt his game to a higher level of play. I think Hughes is a smart player, and I think he is trying to adapt his game to suit the NHL. Will he succeed? I think we will definitely see some improvements.

I think opposite. I don’t think he has a high hockey IQ. I think he’s a fantastic skater that plays outside of structure and that combination leads to lots of points. It also leads to many other negatives.
He’s not getting taller. He’s not getting much bigger. He’s not going to stop taking chances at the cost of defense.

You don't think Hughes has high hockey IQ? I think you would be in the minority in that category, but you are certainly entitled to your opinion. I think he does have the IQ, but he is still figuring out the professional game. I've seen enough from him to be confident that he will get to a higher level some day soon.

I'm also not too worried about his height. Would I prefer he be 6'3"? Absolutely. But there are many defenders out there who possess an above average defensive game, and a below average NHL height.

You realize that would put him just behind Barrie , Makar, Hedman for points. He’s played 8 forgettable games in the nhl and you think he’s in that company.

I’ll be in the minority on this board but majority in others or the overall NHL. People here refuse to see that. Super high IQ players arent 2nd in the league in worst plus minus. It’s never happened. He isn’t smart enough to not take bad chances. He isn’t smart enough to get the puck out of his end quick enough to not get hemmed. He isn’t smart enough to make a ton of stretch passes.

he’s a good skater. He’s a great 4th forward.

Who has "super high" hockey IQ outside of generational talents like Lidstrom. Does Doughty have super high hockey IQ or just high hockey IQ?

I thought he was very dynamic in those 8 games actually, but it isn't based on those games alone at all.

  • He projected at an elite trajectory in college and completely dominated his small AHL sample.
  • His trajectory in terms of freshman to sophomore years was as impressive as Adam Fox, who just won the Norris. Obviously Fox exploded in production in his junior year.
  • He led all college defensemen in primary points in his sophomore year.
  • He happens to be a better skater than Fox and some have commented that he was more reliable in his own end than Fox at Harvard.
Rathbone is a blue chip prospect who absolutely has #1 potential. That's not to say trading Hughes wouldn't be a gamble because nobody can be sure what Rathbone can become until he actually shows it.

I suppose we’ll see. I still think he’s adapting, we haven’t seen the best of him yet.

He is a phenom in the offensive end only. He is a disaster in his own end. As a DEFENSEman, that is a problem.

As a Canuck fan, I would love for him to start to make improvement in that regard this upcoming season.

Trade to NJ rn is literally the best possible option. Maximize your assets. We all know it'll never happen, but could get several excellent assets for Hughes.
NJ would be stupid not to overpay a little now and have huge marketing for a decade, as well as really good players.

You’re severely over rating Jack Bone

I agree, we could take Jersey to the cleaners and Hughes could play where he actually really wants to (I can't believe that he would rather play here in alien Canada than there in the good old USA with his brothers). I'm 100% positive that he will ask for a trade eventually...

1) Not all Americans want to play in America. Kesler loved playing in Vancouver, that is just one of many examples.

2) Vancouver is a top notch city.

3) NJD may not even want all 3 Hughes brothers especially if they have similar deficiencies. Variation is often key to a successful team. If Hughes(s) are that bad defensively, do you want him on for 50 minutes per night? Or would you rather commit 8mil elsewhere?

People can criticize him all they want, at the end of the day he'll be a first-ballot hall of famer.

We just need to find a Jeff Beukeboom to pair next to Hughes and he'll be on his way to a Brian Leetch career.

has there ever been 3 brothers on the same team?

100% on board if the return is right.

Might be a stretch, but targeting Ty Smith + Alexander Holtz in the deal would be interesting. Probably too much from NJ's end, but I think Hughes is still quite highly valued + of course the novelty with his brothers.
